Hi Listers I thought at last that someone had a connection to my WHEATLEY family until I realised it was the other family of WHEATLEYs that were in the area at the same time. Is there anyone out there that has connections to the WHEATLEYs who settled in the Morpeth area in the mid 1850's. The two who started the dynasty were John WHEATLEY and Elizabeth Barbery WHEATLEY nee HENDERSON. They married in Howick Northumberland and a number of their decendants, including myself, have Howick as one of their christian names. The family eventually moved to the north of Sydney where John was involved with the Church but not as a Minister. Regards Gary
Hi, Excuse my bunting in but :- 'Ann Bunt was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Kershaw. Her mother was a sister of Richard Holcombe of Holcombe' Inn, York Street. In 1839 Ann married Michael Coughlan who died in 1854. The following year Ann married William Henry Bunn and they conducted the Forbes (Inn) for three years. When William died in 1860 Thomas Coughlan. Ann's son by her first marriage, applied for the license of the Forbes but was refused by the bench. Ann was also refused.' Hi Diane My mother-in-law was a MOORE from Maitland. Her father, Thomas Hammond MOORE (1868-1949) had a coach building business in High Street. They lived in a beautiful old double storey house which was situated about where the caravan park now exists. Thomas was the 4th son of James MOORE (1839-1890 Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England) and Elizabeth Mary Hammond (1840-1916 b. Maitland). Regards, Catherine

Hi Joan, I have only the first part of the 2-part article unfortunately. There is no mention of either of those names. The article deals with the very earliest innkeepers - up to about 1830. It also notes that during the 1840's 16 women held licences for inns in the Hunter. Dear John, I assume that you know of the petrified forest IN the lake (Lake Macquarie) near Teralba. It was designated as a reserve because of this. Fell prey to souvenir hunters. John Goswell >As can be seen for more 'locally', a principal interest is in tracing >"petrified forests". There are likely two or three horizons of these in >the coal measures across the Lakes region. The occur on the western margin >(e.g. Fennel Bay) and also, as seen in the 'Swansea-CHB.htm' >abovementioned, there are good occurrences along the coast from Swansea south. >Regards, >John Byrnes > >(Geologist)
Hi all, I have been researching my children's family history and have traced their G-G-G-Grandfather to Patterson, A Devon man, educated at Teignmouth and trained as a surveyor, Charles Henry Humphrey came to the colony in 1842 and took up land on the Patterson before moving on to the Liverpool plains and later to Queensland. If anyone can help me with any info on this man and his time at Patterson it would be much appreciated, cheers Liz Norfolk Island

Hi I was wondering if I could ask people on the list to post any books that they have read that relate to the Hunter Valley area? I love to read about the places and times of my ancestors even if they don't get a mention. I even enjoy reading Fiction books that are set in a time or place that relates to my families. So if Marg thinks it would be alright how about telling us if you have come across a good book that is connected to the Hunter Valley area. Regards, Dianne
I am looking for a photograph of the church which was near the Wesleyan Cemetery at Oswald. It was demolished but I understand it was still there in the early 1940's. My Harman/Lane/Hawkins families are all b uried there. Regards Victor Moymow
Hi Catherine Marker posted "If there is any Marker or Moore descendents out there I would love to hear from you" Could you tell me which MOORE family you are interested in. Regards, Dianne
Hi Jenelle As far as we know Henry Page was born in Cambridge, England in abt 1824. Of course the first suspicion was that he was a convict but many other descendents have discounted that theory and he is certainly not on Lesley's list. Until I have concrete evidence I am not prepare to throw out any theory about the ancestors. Cheers Cathy
Louise, thank you, and to all the listers who take the time to reply to our queries and for the interesting stories on families in our local area.
