    1. [HV] BUFFIER BOUFFIER GALVIN O'CONNOR FLANAGAN SMITH - My main Hunter families
    2. Perplexed
    3. I've been reading list input lately but like a number of other listers have not had a lot to add. However, I've been happily collecting information on my Hunter Valley families from the National Archives, NSW State Archives and the various armed service sites which if anyone has an interest in the families below I'm more than happy to share. To add more families to the current thread, my family which can be viewed at http://awt.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW <http://awt.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=:3169387&recno=0&t i=5538> &db=:3169387&recno=0&ti=5538 includes the following Hunter Valley names: Heinrich BUFFIER (BOUFFIER on naturalisation in 1866) who arrived with wife Catherina Web(b)er and son Johannes on the Parland in 1849. They were part of the German families brought out to help establish the wine industry in the Hunter. Families in my direct line that the Buffiers/Bouffiers married into or who married into them include: GALVIN (James and Mary (O'Connor) from Clare Ireland arriving on the Garland in 1852 with Patrick, Michael and Mary). James was a farmer and is listed, I believe, at http://www.nswlocalhistory.com.au/singleton1885.htm . My grandfather Daniel Galvin, one of Michael Galvin and Catherine Flanagan's children, was, according to his birth certificate, born at Wybong Creek. Daniel was a miner, coal sinker and I believe a mine manager in the Hunter. Daniel married Catherine Bouffier, a granddaughter of Heinrich and Catherina. If anybody has an interest in the Galvins I've loaded part of a scan from their shipping records which shows where they came from and both sets of parent's details onto the Y-IRL site. I can forward the full scan on or you can join the Y-IRL group and view it there. I understood the Galvins were from Innes Clare but I'm not sure that's correct given the information on the scan. SMITH (Patrick who arrived I think on the Jessie in 1838) as an 18 year old. He was sponsored by William Rutland (King Billy). Patrick was from Blackwater Bridge, Cavan Ireland. Patrick married Mary SMITH. Patrick was a carrier and is listed in Grevilles for Cessnock. One of the interesting and sad items I collected recently was from NSW State Archives where I got a copy of bankruptcy papers for Patrick. Patrick and Mary's daughter, Mary Agnes Smith married Martin Bouffier, one of Heinrich and Catherina's sons. Martin remarried on Mary's death to Honorah McGrane daughter of Bernard McGrane. There were 16 children from Martin's two marriages so there have to be more relations scattered around the county side now. Mary Smith arrived on the George Fife in 1840 as a 10 year old. Her parents were John and Mary SMITH and they were from Ardnamurchan Scotland. John Smith was a farmer in the Hunter I believe, although with Smith as a surname it's proved difficult to get a lot of information about them. However, the same site above, nswlocalhistory, has a number of John Smiths listed in the Hunter. John and Mary's other children were Lachlan (18), Roderick (16), George (12), Margaret (9). I believe George lived in the Hunter because Patrick indicated when his creditors came calling that he had sold his brother in law George, his bullocks. I have been unable to trace Lachlan, Roderick or George, not being able to find them on a NSW marriage or death search or with listings to various boards, including the Australian Smiths board. All of these families were Catholics and I think my next step is to look for Catholic Church records/schooling etc. Having said that, there was a note about a Patrick Smith's involvement in a request made to the National Schools Board in 1866 for a school at Cessnock. This was in the book "Cessnock 1826-1954" which I think was written by William Broomfield. That book includes a lot of references to Hunter families. The 1866 request was supported by people of all denominations CE, RC and EC (whatever that last was). Other family names associated with the Bouffier family are: BRIDGE, CHAPPLE, BURKE (Martin and Mary's daughter's married into these families). ALEXANDER, ROOTS, POGNOSKI, MORSE, JORGENSEN, COTTER & BULL (Martin and Honorah's daughters married into these families). Joe Bouffier, Martin's brother married Grace McGrane, another of Bernard's daughters. Families their daughters married into include: PENTLAND, OSBORNE (A Pentland descendant has just made contact with me if anyone has an interest in this family). Finally, one of my mother's cousins was Frank HURLEY. If anyone has an interest in that family I would be keen to correspond. Not I hasten to add that I know anything more about the family than has been reported, but I would be interested in finding out whether they have any Bouffier information. I'm very keen to get any photos of the family. I have been sent photos of the various Bouffier and Smith gravestones in the Hunter Valley and was also sent very kindly by another lister, a photo of Martin Bouffier who was an early council man with Singleton Council. Happy to share these if anyone is interested. Best wishes all in your searches. Anne Whiteford

    3. Hi Listers Unfortunately I have probably broken every copyright law in the State so will not post the complete story, instead I shall tell you where to find it and some other interesting bits and pieces. I am a member of both the Lake Macquarie & District Historical Society and the Lake Macquarie Family History Group. Both of these Associations have records on most of the information you require, I will ask JenM to fill you in on the details of the Family History Group as she is President of it. With the Historical Society I am Librarian and Treasurer. We are based at the Heritage Centre, Victory Parade, Toronto in the old Toronto Railway station on Greenway 1, we are open Sun and Wed afternoons 1-4pm, by arrangement touring groups etc can be catered for, our fees are simple (by donation), we are a registered not for profit Society and are self funded. We have an extensive collection (42 years worth) of photographs, newsclippings and books, which I have started indexing (became Librarian last Wednesday), we do not have the facilities (people, money or access) for internet exposure but I have tried to setup a form of online information with Ninemsn Groups and also an email address which is lmdhs@hotmail.com (notice it's free...lol) which I monitor. Recently I found a website that allows you to make your own online library of books http://www.librarything.com/ just type in the name or author and it fills in all the details for you, including ISBN and Dewey system, which I hope will make indexing the catalogue easier, once complete I will need to find out how to gain exposure of the finished (never finished) product. Hope this is not too off topic for the list MargM or out of bounds as I don't wish to tread on anyones toes, so I will apologise in advance if anyone is offended. 1. [HV] Interesting people - Cantwells and Wilks
    2. Dennis Johnstone
    3. I've turned up some interesting information on my GG uncle, Henry Joseph Cantwell, and his wife Ida Florence Wilks, and was wondering if anyone else has come across them. Henry Cantwell (b May 1896, Greta; d 13 Nov 1962) married Ida Florence Wiilks (b 1899 West Maitland, d 8 Aug 1990, Elizabeth Bay). He was the son of James Cantwell and Ellen Byrnes. On enlisting in the army at the start of WW1, he gave his occupation as a butcher. Fortunately for my research (and unfortunately for him), he was severely wounded during the war and I've now turned up years of paperwork from him and his wife to various Government departments about his treatment, pensions and the like. From these, I've discovered that Henry became a journalist with the Sun and the Sydney Morning Herald. By the 1950s, he was an editor with the SMH at the same time as his nephew John Kenneth Cantwell (more on him in a moment) was a proof reader on the paper. I've written to the SMH to see if they have any records or if there's anyone still around that remembers Henry but with no response to date. As for Henry's wife Ida, she gives her occupation as a violinist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, but again my efforts at finding out more have gone without response. Returning to John (Jack) Cantwell (born East Greta), he was an author and playwright who led an itinerant life. I've just turned up one of his books, Never a Closing Door, and from the dust jacket I've learned he was a dishwasher in London, a public bar pianist in Canada, London and elsewhere, a casual reporter for an Ontario (Canada) newspaper, and a proof reader for newspapers on three continents. Jack was in the RAAF during the war, apparently as a scriptwriter and announcer with Allied Forces Radio. I've also found out that he received a BA from Sydney University in 1948, and qualified as an English teacher but never taught. The circumstances of his death on 23 February 1966 at Potts Point are still sensitive with some family members so I won't go into details here, but I'd love to find out more about Jack as he was quite a flamboyant character from what I've learned so far. According to family tales, the Cantwells also had connections to the Maitland Mercury but I haven't been able to prove (or disprove) this so far. What makes this very interesting for me is I'm also a writer, poet and journalist (although I've given up the latter) who's travelled the world, worked in the press and on radio and, while working for the Singleton Argus some years back, also wrote for the Maitland Mercury. All without knowing the family history! Anyway, if anyone has come across these people, I'd appreciate them getting touch. Dennis PS I have time to write this as we're having fierce blizzards here in NE Scotland. It certainly makes a change from the Hunter.
