    3. Hi Anne, When I was about 10 yrs of age, we had a neighbour--Gerry Pentland--son of an Irish doctor and the Matron of the Maitland Hospital. Gerry is an unsung Australian hero. I would like to make contact with your 'Pentland' correspondant. Wal Buffier, a Maitland cattle dealer, was well known to my Father. Thankyou Anne. Regards, Greg Ball.

    3. Brian, you are correct--a branch of the Corrigan family from Enniskillen, came to OZ with their relatives--the Glass family. I think they were related by marriage. They settled about Singleton in the 1840-1850 era. William Corrigan & Alexander Glass began a carrying business in partnership from Morpeth to all points north and north-west. They were very successful, having 120 teams on the road at one time. They arrived in OZ 1/4/1839 per the 'Argyle'--Alexander's wife being Eliza Jane Corrigan of Fermanagh before marriage. Eliza ran a store in Singleton and bought a considerable amount of land in the district. The Corrigan family later acquired some of this land at Glassville [now Gouldsville]--near Singleton. One son, John Corrigan Glass was awarded the CBE in 1958--for services to Performing Arts. Have further detail if required. Regards. Bennie.

    3. I have been side tracked to New Zealand. I found everyone on the rootsweb list very helpful in finding a cousin IVY FOSTER who left the Singleton area and didn't keep contact with her family. Found her marriage to a Dr John Campbel McKenzie and had two sons. Families associated are BARRY BAXTER NEILSON FOSTER NEELY SMITH & GRAHAME originally from Singleton area. My big hurdle is finding how my great grandfather DANIEL BARRY arrived in Aus from Ireland in 1850's. I have searched shipping records but the only place I could find a DB was on the George Metcalfe sailing from Melbourne to Sydney. Can anyone offer ideas or am I at a stalemate. Cheers June

    3. Hi Sharon, I notice that you have interest in the Corrigan Family? I too, have interest in the Corrigan Family as follows: "Sarah Botsford" arrived 16 Feb 1842 - sailed from Greenock 12 Oct 1841. Eliza Gorrel (also written as Gore), 18y, farm servt, gone to brother at Parramatta, brought out by J Miller, under protection of James & Mary Corrigan- a cousin of latter, native of Maheracroft Fermagh, parents John & Susan- father is alive, a farm & dairy servt, good health, likely to be useful, c/e, can read, no complaints, James & Mary paid her passage. Also on board- Nobel Corrigan, 18y, S/O James & Mary, b. Lowthers Town Fermagh (parents on board) Irvine Corrigan, 25y, S/O James & Mary, b. Lowthers Town Fermagh, farm labr Francis Corrigan, 27y, S/O James & Mary, b. Lowthers Town Fermagh, farm labr William Corrigan, 18y, S/O James & Mary, b. Lowthers Town Fermagh Margaret Corrigan, 21y, d/O James & Mary, b. Maheracroft Fermagh (under protection of parents) Susan Corrigan, 23y, d/O James & Mary, Maheracroft Fermagh (under protection of parents) James & Mary Corrigan were free passengers but are not listed anywhere on the shipping films. Records also say that some of the kids went to Patrick Plains to seek employment (they probably all went). I have not actively pursued the Corrigan Family to a great extent as I am mainly interested in Elizabeth GORRELL she is my Gt Gt Grandmother. I was wondering if they are the same CORRIGAN Family as yours? 3. Hello Maureen, You wrote PLUMRIDGE - " ... is not a very common name in Australia, and I would be interested to hear from any listers with connections to the name, or anyone who may know or have known anyone of that surname." I've only ever known one Plumridge. A very nice man and I'm sure he'd be happy to help you .. although I have no idea if he has relatives in Newcastle area ... but seeing just about everybody has or has had *some* relatives in the Newcastle area (even me) it would be quite likely. He is a geologist named Colin Plumridge - A very systematic explorer for gold and copper and such. Did a great deal of work in the Bourke area, and elsewhere. You can easily see/find about him or his work (and probably find his contact within some such) via Google [and a few such finds I place below]. 3. Hi Anne, Firstly, there is nothing in the article on the Scots influence - in fact it lists no names (now I look closely) and is quite general. The article about the Geman settlers has no mention of Buffier (or variants). In relation to the "Parland" it says: "The German families in the first three immigrant ships which arrived in Port Jackson in 1849 - Beulah, Parland and Harmony - came from a cluster of wine-making villages and towns, mentioned above....>(here a long list).... The German vinedressers, like their wives, who also worked in the fields, were overworked and underpaid, bullied, and generally treated with ill respect". Sorry, I cannot scan at the moment> After a big V attack my scanner and laptop no longer seem to be talking to each other and I need some quiet time to sort it out.
