    3. Hello Louise, You mentioned you had a book on Hunter Valley Inns and Inn Keepers, I wonder if you have any reference in there to the "Union Inn". I don't know where it was located in the Hunter, but I assume around Seaham, Clarencetown, area. Thanks in advance Judy

    3. Hello John I have a Welch line in my tree. Nicholas Lister Welch married Maria ? They had a son Nicholas Lister Welch born 4.10.1895, I don't know where, but died 1963 in Wallsend. and he married Ruby Rebecca Hill, the sister of my grandmother. They had 2 children Artherine "Enie" Welch and Josie Welch. I don't know if they fit into your family at all? According to the Pioneer Cemetery listing for Raymond Terrace, there are a couple of burials - these may help you. 3. Hi listers, I've just returned to Newcastle from Queensland and picked up the end thread of German immigration. If anyone can shed some light for me please on my family line: Peter Wilhelm RASELL/RASSEL b abt.1817 and his wife (maiden name) Marian Maglena PREINSER b1823, later to be known as Peter William RUSSEL/RUSSELL and Mary Margaret RUSSEL/RUSSELL arrived on the ship "Beulah" in 1849. He was a vine-dresser and she was a straw bonnett maker and they came with the German emigrants to help start/upgrade the wine industry in Australia with their skills, Sailing with them was a daughter Regina Wilhelmina Justina RASSEL b1843 who later married a Frederick ARENDT in Bathurst in 1861. Another daughter Margarita RASSEL b1847 in Germany died on the voyage in 1849 aboad the "Beulah" and was "buried at sea". A further nine children were born in Australia and Marian/Mary remarried a Thomas MANNELL in Bathurst in 1881 following the death of her husband Peter in 1860 in Bathurst. Question: As they were brought out to Australia for the wine industry, who employed them and where did they work and under what conditions? It seems that a lot of the action centred around the Bathurst area. Can anyone help? 3. Hi All I am yet another fence-sitter coming out of the woodwork! I am interested in information regarding George Edward HARRIS who married Elizabeth Ann JARRETT in New Lambton in 1898. 3. Guilty as charged! lol but have enjoyed reading everyone's posts unfortunately none have relevant information on my family interests, the answers to my several brick walls lay buried in Scotland, Ireland & Wales literally!! So have been spending most of my time trying unsuccessfully to find those 'hidden' clues, and suspect that only a trip to the relevant countries Record Offices will reveal answers - of course that trip depends on my winning the lotto!! LOL However have listed my surname interests just in case someone else 'lurking' has information. Still chasing: Bernard/Barnard McGOWAN - one source suggests born C 1812 Glasgow Scot. as that is where he was trialled/sentenced Sept 25. 1829 however can find no records of birth - parents names unknown; another suggestion was he was born in Ireland, but since I don't know parents names/county etc Irish websites have not been helpful. Bernard sailed from Sheerness on Marquis of Huntley Apr 4 1830 sentenced to 14 yrs transportation; I have the Oz family tree information since his arrival. Robert & Sinah EVANS - Know family lived in Llangynog Montgomeryshire Wales and via 1841 Census have found their children still at home then, my ancestor John Evans had left home prior to census, but I have his Oz history; Est. Robert born c1786 (age 55 in census), Sinah born c1791 (age 50 in census), unable to find 1. Sinah surname; 2. marriage record; death records for either. Edward & Mary GRIMES (nee McMullen) - believe married c1813 Co Roscommon Ireland; arr. Oz aboard "Hooghley" dep. Ireland 1827; believe he was one member of the 24 Royal Veterans Company aboard ship. unable to find parentage of either Edward/Mary; no death record for Edward & no record of return to UK. James & Rachel McCURDY (nee Richards) - very confused gentleman! claimed to be convict on "Tottenham" 1818 - no records/convict indents found, nor any record of being transported on convict ship; some believe James came to the colony under a different name which is unknown, and he maybe Irish!? James claimed on marriage cert to have come free to the colony but on everything else he states he was a convict!? 1828 Census noted 'Free by servitude; Catholic; Ship - Tottenham, Occ. Baker. 1. [HV] German Immigration
    2. It appears to be generally not well known that there was a major recruitment program to bring German people to the Hunter Valley. >From memory (I'm not on the right computer), there were representations to the governor to allow this, as it was not permitted beforehand (this was an English penal colony). They pleaded that a wine industry could be established but they needed experienced vineyard workers. The French were not in the "good books" at the time and there had been a major famine etc in Germany (2 million left in a decade or so mostly to America). German workers, mainly vinedressors, were brought over literally by the shipload, after successful recruiting in the Rhine Valley. Interestingly the Germans integrated with the English here in the Hunter Valley (they were Catholic so intermarried without problems) as opposed to South Australia (they were mostly Lutheran there). We, therfore do not have German towns and settlements such as Handorf. 3. Hello Dennis. As you are in Scotland, you might not be aware that the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper has an RSVP column (don't know if it is daily or weekly, sorry) where anyone can BRIEFLY list people who they are searching for, reunions, etc. Try an online search, as the SMH is freely available EACH DAY (not for past papers) on-line; and details should be given there on how to send a request to the RSVP column. Alternatively, someone on this list who reads the paper daily might be able to give you the answer immediately. You could try writing two separate entries to them for publication in that part of the paper; and as I assume that many ex-staff would read "their" paper religiously, you might hit a wider audience, with a better response than just writing to the bureaucrats. Also, I think that the Sydney Symphony Orchestra is attached to the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission), so if you tried to contact say the Librarian there (I am married to a librarian, and LOVE them and their positive and helpful attitudes to researchers); she might be able to help you also; or at least to put you in touch with the relevant people. Librarians generally go out of their way to go that extra distance to try to help us all. And on a slightly different tack, there is a library and archives of some sort attached to the Sydney Opera House. At the SSO performs there, it is not unlikely that they might also have something on your relevant person. Hoping that amidst all of this verbiage there might be something to help you. 3. I have John SIMONS who was born in 1843, son of John SIMONS/ SIMMONS and Mary Anne TAYLOR. My info is that he is the brother of Edward SIMONS (b. 1839) who married Harriet Maria BURGESS in 1860. She died in 1870, and he re-married to Catherine HARDES in 1874 in Maitland. In total, Edward had at least 14 children. 3. John. As always your postings provide valuable information. I had not previously been aware of the likely connection between the religion of the German immigrants and their settlement into the host community. Thank you for that. A lot of German people, mostly off the ship "Caesar" I think, settled in the Eden and Monaro areas of NSW; and to the best of my knowledge they did not ever settle into German communities or leave German placenames; but rather they integrated, now seemingly seamlessly -- although it might not have seemed to be so at the time -- into the local communities, inter-marrying with the Anglos etc. To date I have not done even a superficial analysis of their religions, but that will now be something else to add to my "to do" list -- as if it weren't long enough already. LOL. Once again I thank you for revealing this line of thought. 3. Hi all Another fence sitter. Early on (previous email addies) was not just a fence sitter but work and family commitments took over and now love to read and keep up with the list and a very occasional posting. This one is for Anne re German immigration. There is a good book called 'Greetings from the Land where Milk and Honey Flows: The German Immigration to NSW 1838-1858' edited by Patricia Cloos and Jurgen Tampke published in 1993. It used to be available at the NSW State Library Shop. It discusses how they were 'enticed' into coming to Australia; a number of letters and diary entries written by the immigrants (3 letters from passengers who travelled on the 'Parland'); and the ships and passenger lists during those years. There is an index but this only lists the main families although if you know the ship they arrived on they will be listed in the passenger lists. As are the 'BUFFIER' family listed. It is a good book for insights and understanding their lives at that time. My direct family came out on the first of these ships the 'Kinnear' in 1838. They are the SECKOLD family and although some ended up later in the Hunter Valley they were contracted to the MacARTHURs at Camden Park. I do have numerous branches of family in the Hunter Valley and continue to find more names all the time. My main direct ancestor is George WEAKLEY and Hannah SCARF who arrived on the 'Lady Raffles' on 12 September 1839 (listed as WAKELY). originally working for a MARSHALL they then had land in the Hexham area and were dairy farmers. The main road after the expressway is named after them 'Weakleys Road' crossing over a creek or bridge also called Weakley. George charged a toll at one stage for anyone crossing the creek through his property. >From them there are many descendant families. 3. Hello Rosemary, My father knew 'Ted' Beattie--the Gouldsville post-master--very well. Dad had a farm about 800 meters from Ted's house--which also served as the Post Office and exchange. Dad went to Ted's place at night, and they would play draughts. This was about 1913. Ted kept bees and made 'Honey Beer' or mead. Both David & Margaret are buried at the C. of E. cemetery at Whittingham--the main C. of E. cemetery for Singleton. Unfortunately, I cannot see it 'on-line'--but the S.F.H.S. would have it listed and available for purchase. This may not help you if there is no headstone. When I went to school [1936]-- I rode my pony past the old Beattie home at Gouldsville--which was deserted--made of slabs with an iron roof--now demolished. The Beatties owned what was known as Boggy Flat. The telephone service didn't last long--due to lack of support. There were only 2 subscribers--my uncle Frank--Gouldsville 1 and my father--Gouldsville 2. I also have some knowledge of a few of the other names you mention--e.g. Thrift, Thorley, Harbourne, etc. I have further detail if you require it. Regards, Bennie.

The article about the Geman settlers has no mention of Buffier (or variants). In relation to the "Parland" it says: "The German families in the first three immigrant ships which arrived in Port Jackson in 1849 - Beulah, Parland and Harmony - came from a cluster of wine-making villages and towns, mentioned above....>(here a long list).... The German vinedressers, like their wives, who also worked in the fields, were overworked and underpaid, bullied, and generally treated with ill respect".
