    3. Dear Jenny, The Ryerson Index has someone looking after lookups for the period that she indexed, but from time to time other requests for lookups are received, which can not currently be catered for. Is there anyone locally that would volunteer to do these lookups, which were few in number? Anyone desiring to do so could contact John Graham [email protected] Phil Holford [email protected] or myself. Of course we are always on the scout for indexers also. Hi Listers Might there be anyone going to the Newcastle Library in the near future that might check the details in a Death Notice published in the Newcastle Herald on the 22nd October 1998 please. The person I am most interested in is a Rose Imelda Munro. At this stage I am "presuming" that the library would keep an archive of the papers there, but if I am wrong, then could someone advise me where they might be. 3. Dear Bruce, Third time lucky maybe. Sorry for the previous sends which occurred without notice this end. It is terrific that you were able to get your lookup done in such quick time. The Ryerson Index would welcome offers from anyone who would like to volunteer to do such lookups, or in fact any lookups for papers they have access to, and that do not currently have a volunteer to do the lookups. I think that the record will remain with Alan Nancarrow for speed of lookups. Alan was preparing information for lookups for several years of the SMH last year and quite a few requests to the DPS List were answered virtually as soon as they were posted. Sincerely,Bill >>> >>> But I was VERY lucky: Evelyn Davis must have been there today, and I had >>> the transcription just THIRTY MINUTES after my request! 2. Diane
    3. In May 2008, after several years of painstaking research and investigation, five burial pits dating from the First World War were identified at Pheasant Wood, near Fromelles in northern France. The pits, which have lain undisturbed for more than 90 years, are believed to contain the remains of between 250 and 400 British and Australian soldiers, buried behind German lines after the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916. http://www.lynallhall.vic.edu.au/pdf/lambis_article.pdf The disastrous attack at Fromelles on the night of 19 July 1916, the first engagement undertaken by the Australian 5th Division on the Western Front, also proved to be the most costly. By the time the action was called off the next morning, the Australians had lost 5,533 men killed, wounded and missing. Casualties for the British 61st Division, who attacked alongside the Australians, numbered 1,547. The Commission's records suggest that between 19 and 21 July 1916 the Australian dead at Fromelles amounted to 1,780, the British 503. Many of those killed in the engagement could not be accounted for at the time. Historians have long speculated that up to 400 of the missing dead were recovered by the Germans in the days following the attack and buried behind their lines. Painstaking research led to the possible identification of several mass burial pits on the edge of Pheasant Wood near Fromelles. In May 2008 the Australian Government asked the Commission to oversee a limited excavation to establish whether or not the pits contained remains. The three week dig found conclusive evidence that substantial numbers of Australian and British soldiers had been buried in five of the eight pits identified. In May 2009 work to recover the dead for individual reburial in a new military cemetery at Fromelles will begin. http://www.cwgc.org/fromelles/?page=english/background/1 On 2 April 2009, Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon Warren Snowdon MP, announced that Army had compiled a list of those First Australian Imperial Force soldiers it believes may be buried at Pheasant Wood, Fromelles, France. "Following intensive research and consultation, we have identified a list of 191 Australian First World War soldiers who we believe may be among those buried at Fromelles," Mr Snowdon said. He cautioned that the list was not definitive and that research into the group burial at Fromelles would continue; both in Australia and abroad. "Given the information available, it is impossible to be absolutely certain who is buried at Pheasant Wood. However we, and many other historians and interest groups, believe this list provides a solid foundation for further investigation," Mr Snowdon said. The working list of names is a result of intensive research conducted by Professor Peter Dennis, an independent historian contracted by Army, and follows consultation with several well-recognised War historians late last year. Those involved in the research include individuals from Friends of the Fifteenth Brigade; Friends and Family of the First Australian Imperial Forces; Australian War Memorial; Army History Unit; Fromelles.net; Office of Australian War Graves, and Monash University. http://www.defence.gov.au/fromelles/buried.htm The Army has established a register of people who believe their relative may be buried at Fromelles. They are interested in information about First Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) soldiers who fought in the Battle of Fromelles, and whose date of death is listed between 19 to 28 July 1916 and grave is listed as unknown. If this profile fits your relative, please submit your information to : http://www.defence.gov.au/fromelles/contactinquiry.cfm Included on the list (and believed to be buried at Fromelles) are the following men from the Hunter Valley region - http://www.defence.gov.au/fromelles/files/buried.pdf John Cyril WYNN [Son of Albert Henry WYNN, Largs, via West Maitland] Service number: 2485 Rank: Private [Pte] Unit: 30th Battalion Service: Army War Grave Register notes: WYNN, Pte. The Mitchell Library has it but that's probably no good to you unless you want to pay for 'Copies Direct' which I think is very reasonable at $13.20 per 50 consecutive pages when you can't get to the book yourself (the book has an index). http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/1904584/Holdings?lookfor=James+Rixon+and+Amelia+Goodwin&max=117319&offset=1&#details They also have a copy of the first book. 3. Good Morning, I stand corrected re birth place etc for Robert Copeland LETHBRIDGE. The reference in Prof. Woods work does not say that Bridgman was named by Lethbridge. So whilst the property was originally a grant to a Thomas CLAYTON and a farm established there by a Richard ALCORN the source of the name is open to discussion. As for why the name is being discussed I am open to suggestions. Kr Terry Quoting the entire text of a previous message in a reply is poor netiquette and so is plagiarism. Please don't do it.
