    2. D Cook
    3. Hi Marje, Thankyou for taking the time to look for a photo for me. Much appreciated. I'm pretty certain it wasn't my William BUCKMAN walking home with the 2nd William BRAMBLE - he was the son in law of William BRAMBLE 1804-1887 & as far as I know he was in Nambucca where he lived. William BRAMBLE 1840-1892 had a daughter Alice who married Edward "Ted" BUCKMAN. I was assuming he was the BUCKMAN In-Law that was mentioned in the article I read (as he is the only Buckman to marry any of this particular William Bramble's daughters that I know of so far in my research & they were 'of Tamboy' as stated in article). Re William Bramble Snr, I did read (back in 2004 on http://www.jenwilletts.com/eraring.htm ) that he was a renowned cattle thief...... so he was never caught/punished?... pity he didn't put his crafty thinking to some good purpose :o). I think "the old curmudgeon" is a great nickname. I've always felt a little sad knowing that he was really just a kid when he first found trouble though. Stealing food... must've been hungry. In your reply to Marg you said you were descended from Lydia who married William BELTON. I thought Lydia married James PALMER & Eliza was the daughter to marry William BELTON (according to marr reg'ns & also Vicki Hails work http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hails/thesis.htm) ? Or is that not the William BELTON you are talking about? Thanks again, Deb. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marjedawn_1" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 5:24 PM Subject: Re: [HV] William BRAMBLE 1804-1887 (was: New NLA site) > Hi Deb, > > Thank you for your interest in the Bramble saga. > > I have some photos of the family so will check for your Jane Elizabeth. > Apparently she married Wm Buckman in 1874. > According to the news item it was her husband who was walking home with > her > father, Wm Bramble. . > > Wm Bramble Snr was a convict per Mary II,1822, who served out his sentence > of 14 years plus an extra 2 years for assault committed soon after > arrival. > Reputed to have a rather bad temper and his penchant for collecting other > people's, albeit unbranded, cattle has earned him the title of "the old > curmudgeon" from MargM and myself as we researched his movements. > Despite his several appearances in court rooms I have not found that he > actually served a sentence for his cattle duffing. > > If you would like to exchange notes, please contact me offline. > > Cheers > Marje > Port Macquarie. >

He's a 'good one' to have as he left reasonably large footprints , early for being a very ineffective cattle duffer in that he kept getting caught . Are a few refs to him in the Central Coast / Brisbane Water Bench Books and Court Case records from 1835 He was also involved in the Brisbane Water Court Case 1837/38 . I have a whole book on those events I am not related , just an interested bystander. The Old Curmudgeon is a good name for him. Marj has alot more on him There would be quite a few refs to him in the NLA newspapers on line data Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin

    3. Hi Marg & Bramble researchers, Have just caught on to William's name being mentioned. He's one my 3x Great Grandfathers through daughter Jane Elizabeth BRAMBLE. Have not started seriously on the BRAMBLEs but have collected bits & pieces along my travels researching my other families. Am also aware of the newspaper articles but haven't alot of time to go through them yet. Can someone please update me on the statements below about William? I did have a little giggle :o) . Am also interested in any photos of the Brambles especially William's family. I have seen the one of Jane in the book "A Shepherd from Kent" in her latter years. Is there a younger one? Thanks, Deb. ----- Original Message ----- From: "MargM" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; "Marjorie Bird" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, June 21, 2009 10:27 AM Subject: Re: [HV] New NLA site snipped... > Thats a shame it turned out to be 'son of the old > curmudgeon Had it not been could have been a case of 'did > he fall or was he pushed ' :-) > > More of the Maitland Mercury will be up soon . 3. Hi all My experience with the NLA site has been great. I have found over 100 references to one of my families with what is admittedly an unusal family name, Bouffier/Buffier. They set up a local cricket club, played in what must have been the original NSW/Qld State of Origin football and one member and wrote occasional very stoppy letters about various community members to the local paper. I've also found some articles which have made me shiver. My great grandfather was a policeman in far north Queensland around Coen, Musgrave and Laura. I have found a number of articles about him, including one where he found a corpse. The man had been speared and had then fallen or was pushed into a lagoon and a crocodile came upon him. I count myself lucky to live when I do and not have to face the sheer hard work and grind and the dangers of Australia in the late 18th and early 19th Century. I cannot recommend the NLA site too highly. I would suggest everybody check all of the newspapers available and do not restrict your search just to newspapers in the area your ancestors lived. I have found family in places I would never have expected them to be, including across the continent from their home. I have also found shipping records, records of overseas sales from family members, show awards etc. It's proved to be a great resource and I'm really looking forward to more newspapers coming on line. 3. Hi, I also have had a wonderul time with the site.  I found a lovely story about an ancestor who took another fellow to court for stealing his turkeys. The plaintiff turned up at the case with a few drinks in him and the judge sent him to jail for contempt of court.  The defendant, when his case came up (I was able to find both the instances) was acquitted!  This was back in 1848. Its a great site, and a great time waster. 3. Thank you to all for replies regarding the death of William Bramble and the suggestion of following up the Inquest papers. It was the wording of the news report of his death which led me to believe that it referred to the emancipated convict Wm. Bramble, however on checking the NSW BDM I have found that it was his son, also named Willliam, who died in unusual circumstances. Nonetheless an interesting addition to the Bramble family history. Gratefully, Marje > Dear Marje, > ]Having found that information you now know that the death was an unusual > one. >

    3. Dear Marje, ]Having found that information you now know that the death was an unusual one. Unusual deaths are the subject of an Inquest, see www.records.nsw.gov.au Archives in Brief No. 4. The result of the Inquest will be on a reel at State Records and those reels are also part of the Archives Resourses Kit which has a new name and is held by several family history groups and big libraries. Regardless of where the Inquest was held, the result had to be recorded by the State Coroner in one book at the City Coroners Office. For some time frames, there are papers, so the whole Inquest file could be held at State Records, Kingswood.
