Hi , I am looking for the family of James and Sarah Jane Brown . James was a Sergeant Instructor of Volunteers, ( of British Army ) who was stationed in Victoria c.1859, Hobart, 1860 - 1865, then in New Zealand in 1866 - 7 Their son Reginald was born in Victoria in abt.1859. Two daughters, Adeline, abt.1863 and Frances Albinia abt.1865 were born at Hobart Town and another son, Horatio was born in New Zealand in abt.1866. Does ayone have information regarding the British Volunteers who served in the colonies? TIA Marje
Hi Marje. I have no knowledge to help with your direct queries. However, if you go to this web-site -- being the search facility for TNA (The National Archives) in England, and enter james brown in the 'word or phrase' input box, and then enter WO into the 'department or series code' box; you should obtain over 250 hits for James BROWN in the british military. (If you try the same for James Browne you might get other hits too.) Scrolling through the hits, with what you know, MIGHT bring to light your fellow. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp HTH: ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marjedawn_1" <[email protected]> ... Stephen and Hannah Sheather were assisted in their emigration in 1839 to the Hunter region by A.DACE initially. The property he owned or leased was named Elderslie. Later the Sheathers worked on a property owned by a D. DICKSON. Does any lister know of books or articles which provide some historical details about either or both of these men and their Hunter Valley properties? Reg & Catherine Philps [email protected]
I seem to be missing the first enquiry about the Aboriginal person Dixon/Dickerson but it may help to remember that Aboriginal people were not on any electoral rolls until after 1967. Dear Ray and Heather, The Electoral Roll for Australia has been electronically arranged alphabetically State by State for some years. Each Electoral Office has a screen for public use. Back copies are certainly held by the State Library and also some libraries, as well as the Society of Australian Genealogists in Sydney, some on microfiche and some are hard copies. The ones older than about 12 years it is necessary to know the District and Divison of the District to find the enrolled person. If they move, it is not easy to find them again, unless they remained in that area. I have to agree that the 73 year old would be a real "outside" chance of being the person, as Aboriginal people historically have not had a long life span, and I think that continues today, but getting better. Sincerely, Bill > Heather: given the notoriously lower age of death of many aboriginal > people > in Australia, it might be unlikely for the one who died aged 73 to be > aboriginal. As you have HIS name and address, a search of the NSW STATE > electoral roll for before that date, should provide his Occupation. Heather: given the notoriously lower age of death of many aboriginal people in Australia, it might be unlikely for the one who died aged 73 to be aboriginal. As you have HIS name and address, a search of the NSW STATE electoral roll for before that date, should provide his Occupation. If you are in Oz, then hopefully a library somewhere near you MIGHT have either copies of the relevant electoral rolls, or microfiche of them. For example, the NSW State Library in Sydney would be sure to have them in hard copy at least. Likewise the NSW State Electoral Commission (SEC) in Sydney holds hard copies of CURRENT state electoral rolls; but I am not sure what they might have in back copies, if anything. Thats hard to pick from the death indexes . Raworths has never been name of a registration area and Morpeth wasnt either at that time ...... Were no JURAKs or DICKERSONS who fit . 2 possibles in a Robert DIXON and a John HODGES ??? Newcastle City Library has extensive indexes to the Newcastle Herald in books . Maybe a more local person could check these for you ? NSW State Records, Kingswood have card indexes to inquests 1943 to 1965 not accessible to the public .....they will look it up for you............ Could be a problem without a confirmed name Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin
Dear Jan, What was the cause of death? See my reply just a few minutes ago about Inquests, if the cause of death was one that may have required further investigation. Sincerely, Bill HII am interested in the Taylor surname in the Singleton area as I have an ancestor - one Charlotte Taylor who married in 1858 at Gresford, but I have been unable to locate any family for her. There are suggestions she could have been of indigenous family. So any mention of TAYLOR in the area jumps out at me.Marriage
Dear Heather, Any death that is not of natural causes, and even some that are are the subject of an Inquest by the local Coroner. If anyone is being treated by a Doctor for some complaint, which is considered to be the cause of death, then a certificate can be issued by a Doctor to say that the Doctor was treating that person for a specific complaint and after examination of the body that Doctor is of the opinion that Doctor is of the opinion that the complaint was the cause of death, eg heart disease. However if the Doctor is treating the person for something else, say bowel complaint, and it is obvious that the person died from a heart attack, then a certificate can not be issued. Police act on behalf of the Coroner and gather all the information. The Coroner can then either dispense with, or have a formal Inquest. Where a death is from an accident, or as in this case suicide, a Post Mortem examination of the body is carried out, and in those times it would have been by the Local Government Medical Officer, probably at the local hospital morgue. These days the body is taken to Sydney for a Post Mortem and you may have heard recent publicity about the delays there. He submits his findings to the Corner, usually via the Police with all their other reports. To get to the question, you should seek information from the City Coroner at Glebe (opposite the University in Parramatta Road). The City Coroner handles the paper work for the whole state. For that period of time there is probably all the paperwork, held by State Records, Kingswood. See www.records.nsw.gov.au and under Inquests in the alphabetical directory you will find that Archives in Brief No.4 is on Inquests. Police would have made a record on their Occurrences for that day, but these records are I think restricted for 70 years, however you can approach the Police Archivist who is located at Parramatta and may get that information. If you have trouble I have a hard copy. Sincerely,Bill > > an acquaintance of mine (Doug Jurak) has asked if i can find anything > about > a suicide that took place in either Morpeth or Raworth bet 1964-68. To Fay and Bill, Thank you for the interest in my Taylor name. Unfortunately I have absolutely nothing else to go on, all the information I have was in my previous email. I just keep hoping that something will crop up. Going on age and the name Charlotte, I find two possibles in the BDM but I am just not happy with either of them. Thanks again Jan ____________________________________________________________________________________ Access Yahoo!7 Mail on your mobile. Anytime. Anywhere. Hi everybody an acquaintance of mine (Doug Jurak) has asked if i can find anything about a suicide that took place in either Morpeth or Raworth bet 1964-68. The person in question was an aboriginal man by the surname of DIXON/DICKERSON. He says other surnames possibly involved are JURAK or HODGES. Doug would like to know where he would be buried and anything about his unfortunate death. any clues anyone????? regards Heather Macdonald

There are suggestions she could have been of indigenous family. So any mention of TAYLOR in the area jumps out at me.Marriage registration gives her age as 17, father's name as Robert Taylor, sawyer. Her death registration says his name was "Taylor" occupation "Labourer" the rest is unknown.I wonder if there could be any clues in your data of help to me? Cheers Jan --- On Thu, 2/7/09, Fay Lawrence <[email protected]> wrote: From: Fay Lawrence <[email protected]> Subject: [HV] John Taylor and Wenz family of Lochinvar/ Cross Keys Hotel/Inn To: [email protected] Received: Thursday, 2 July, 2009, 5:40 PM Hi Listers. I am seeking information on John Taylor, Johann & Juliana Wenz and the 'Cross Keys Hotel', connected with Lochinvar in the 1840's & 1850's. My ancestor, John/Johann Wenz, was a vinedresser (one of the first bounty workers, brought out by the Macarthur brothers of Camden Park.) He and his family arrived on the 'Kinnear' in April 1838. After his 5 yr contract expired he moved to Lochinvar. At the time of his death in Lochinvar in Feb1853 he was an 'Innkeeper". He was also a bricklayer and on a daughter's death certificate stated to be a 'distiller'. Records show that his wife, Julia Wince [sic] (Julia/Juliana Wenz) held the licence for 'Cross Keys' in May, 1853. Her son-in-law, John Coleman (m Anne M Wenz in 1850 in Maitland) held the Publicans General Liccence in 1854 to 1857. In 1858 John Coleman applied for a licences for a new house and was granted after being opposed by Mr Mullen. " Johann Wenz worked for John Taylor of Lochinvar in the Hunter Valley, where he laid out a vineyard of twenty-eight acres and worked until he won a house in a lottery in Sydney about 1849." (from Greetings from the Land where Milk and Honey flows: the German Emigration to NSW 1838-1858, ed by Patricia Cloos and Jurgen Tampke. See pp 11, 22, 27, 97, 116, 193-4.) I believe the area planted was near the existing B & B 'Lochinvar House' off the New England Highway but would like to confirm this. Lindsay Wood in his book "Lochinvar: a history of the township and local district",2005 p.80 states that John Taylor is mentioned on conveyancing deeds 1843-44 for Lots 1-12. Cynthia Hunter cites a reference in 'Maitland Mercury' on 29-5-1847 to Mr Taylor as being a representative for the Scotch company (Aberdeen Investment Company). I would like to confirm: a) the location of the planting of vines in the 1840's; b) identity of John Taylor (eg bmd) and any other info; c) location of 'Cross Keys Hotel', Lochinvar and any other relevant info, eg owner (maybe Mr Mullen); d) burial place of John/Johann Wenz (1794-1853) and Julia/Juliana Wenz (1792-1855). Both were RC. Good afternoon list, In recent times I have been gathering information from the Sydney Morning Heralds of 1885 to index into www.ryersonindex.org and I did not find an entry there in the few days following 22nd April 1885 for TURNER, which would not be unusual given the death occurred in SINGLETON, however some country deaths do appear in the SMH. Dear Group, As part of my on-going research on the Cory Family of Paterson's Plains I am now working on documenting the first school on Gilbert Cory's Estate of Vacy. I can access all the usual on-line resources and the documents held by SRNSW. Any personal information on the first two teachers Charles M Chapman who married Hannah Ferguson at Eskdale or Jabez Josiah Morcom who married Margaret Mclauchlan would be most appreciated. Contact with any descendants would be more than welcome. My web-page which outlines my research can be found at www.thomasl.com/cory Information on any of the names mentioned is always welcome. Cheers, Jocelyn
