    3. Hi Wendy, Unfortunately I don't see her on the following: http://www.catholiccemeteries.org.au/ (a very useful site for Sydney area) Have you traced where all her children were living at the time? Or even where they were buried? Sometimes this can help. Further to Ian's message, the Catholic Archives explains: 'If you have a certificate that refers to the "Parish of St James, County of Cumberland", please note that this refers to the geographic area of St Mary's in the colonial period, that is, the central Sydney area: it does not refer to records that are kept at St James Church or to St Mary's Cathedral.' http://www.sydney.catholic.org.au/about/archives.shtml The above archives are NOT available for Family History research but states the following: 'However all relevant sacramental registers have been microfilmed within the restraints of legislation and are available for family history research at Society of Australian Genealogists (120 Kent Street Sydney), State Library of NSW and National Library of Australia (Canberra).' Wait for the transcription and if it gives you the burial ground it makes it easier to track down transcripts via books which give clues (thinking "Cemeteries in Australia - A Register of Transcripts" & one of Nick Vine Hall's books) or Googling. Someone on a Sydney list may be able to help. If it doesn't give you the name of the burial ground then... SAG would be my try if I was desperate (willing to pay for the research) because they would be most familiar with the burial and/or MI transcription records for Sydney & what to try first. http://www.sag.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65&Itemid=100 There is a lot of information about the early burial grounds of Sydney if you start Googling. Graves were also moved too when land was used for other purposes. 3. Greetings To add to the concise answer Ian gave below, the parish named St Laurence is in fact named after the Anglican church in that area of Sydney. The full name of the Church is "Christ Church St Laurence" Howard Newcastle Ian wrote: > Sydney's civil parishes (used for various purposes including BDM > records) and the various ecclesiastical parishes are not the same. > > The Parish of St James, County of Cumberland includes St Mary's > Cathedral and the predecessor Catholic Church (burnt down). > > For the sake of completion, the four inner city parishes are St James, > St Philip, St Andrew and St Laurence. 3. Dianna, Miriam Cragg is possibly a sister of William John CRAGG, a Singleton solicitor of the 1920-1950 era. Florence married Tom Simpson--one son Ronald--married Gloria Hannam. Tom & Florence lived at 'The Knoll', Dunolly. Singleton, and he was one of Singleton's leading builders. Henry Milton Bailey was the son of one of 5 Bailey brothers who married 5 Fernance sisters. The Baileys were a strong Methodist family, while his wife, Louise Graham came from an equally strong Presbyterian family. Both families were graziers, and their properties were not far apart. The Bailey property was 'Greylands', while the Graham property was 'Spottiswood' [ after the village in Scotland of that name]. The 'Spottiswood' cemetery is quite extensive. Marion's husband George Wall was k/a Eric. Also a grazier with land in the same area. Later lived in Boonal St., Redbournberry, near Violet and Alf Roberts. Clarice's husband was Cecil Webber, a farmer of Glenridding, Singleton. Alf Roberts and Violet had no children. HTH. Greg.

    3. Dianna, Arthur Charles was a brother to John Alexander and Alfred James ROBERTS. All had land at Reedy Creek and Westbrook--probably inherited from their father, George William ROBERTS. His son Gordon Hamilton was well known to my family--he rode horses for my Father in the local show. I found a marriage for a Gordon Hamilton ROBERTS in 1936 to a Muriel Lindley--but I could not find a Muriel ROBERTS on subsequent electoral rolls. The name of Gordon's property was 'Bogleburn', Reedy Creek. However, on the 1976 roll, I noticed the names of 2 students with the address of 'Bogleburn', Reedy Creek. Could these be children [adult students] of Gordon ? HTH. Greg.

    3. Sydney's civil parishes (used for various purposes including BDM records) and the various ecclesiastical parishes are not the same. The Parish of St James, County of Cumberland includes St Mary's Cathedral and the predecessor Catholic Church (burnt down). For the sake of completion, the four inner city parishes are St James, St Philip, St Andrew and St Laurence. Three of them happen to be named after the Church of England churches in their district, the exception being St Laurence: the C of E church in that area is Christ Church. See: http://www.ccsl.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=118&Itemid=179 So, if you have a baptism etc in the Catholic Church in the Parish of St James you are looking at St Mary's Chapel/Church/Cathedral http://www.heritage.nsw.gov.au/07_subnav_02_2.cfm?itemid=5055071 Photos at: http://www.sydneyarchitecture.com/cbd/cbd2-002.htm If you have a Catholic rite in the Parish of St Philip, you are probably looking at St Patrick's, Church Hill http://www.shfa.nsw.gov.au/sydney-About_us-Our_heritage_role-Heritage_and_Conservation_Register.htm&objectid=4500091 Photos at: http://www.sydneyarchitecture.com/ROC/ROC016.htm and so on. 2009/8/20 MargM <[email protected]>: > >> Isn't Sydney St James Church of England? > > No early parishes were St James C of E and St James RC >>

    3. Hi Marg Thank you for replying and the bit of extra detail than what the online index gives. I gather the ??? means it is difficult to read. Does the RC mean Roman Catholic? Isn't Sydney St James Church of England? I am more confused than ever now. I have a death certificate for a Catherine Lilly in 1859, in the Sydney Benevolent Asylum. I am sure this is the wrong one as she was 68 years old and my Catherine had her last child in 1848. There was another convict Catherine Lilley alias Mary Kelly who arrived on the Duchess of Northumberland in 1852, so this is probably her. I have tried to find this Mary's age on her arrival but haven't had any luck so far. My Catherine was also a convict - Catherine Carmody (Pyramus 1836) and was reportedly 21 when she left Cork. Is it feasible that my Catherine went to Sydney? As I said I have sent for the burial transcription for 1850 and will just have to wait to see what that comes up with....probably no more than what Marg's given me. That's was the reason I was looking for any cemetery records of her burial. If that is her dying in Sydney, can someone tell me where she would have been buried and if there is any index please? 3. Hello Marg. I assume that this is a 'series' which you are starting to provide to us. Thanks for it/them. I am not aware of HALLS P.O. Directory. Would you have a date for it please Marg? Skimming through this one on East Maitland, and seeing the name EVATT as an hotelier, reminded me that "Doc" EVATT had come from an East Maitland hotel family. I just looked him up again on adbonline (the Australian Dictionary of Biography on-line), and in case anyone else might be interested, here is an extract from the start of his entry at this URL: http://adbonline.anu.edu.au/biogs/A140124b.htm " EVATT, HERBERT VERE (1894-1965), politician and judge, was born on 30 April 1894 at East Maitland, New South Wales, fifth of eight sons of John Ashmore Evatt, a publican from India, and his Sydney-born wife Jane 'Jeanie' Sophia, née Gray. His father, the amiable but ineffectual scion of a well-connected English family, died when Bert was 7, and his Irish-Australian mother shouldered the task of encouraging an intellectually gifted family. Bert attended East Maitland Superior Public School and from 1905 Fort Street Model (Boys' High) School, Sydney, matriculated brilliantly in 1911 and entered St Andrew's College, University of Sydney (B.A., 1915; M.A., 1917; LL.B., 1918-each with first-class honours), where he achieved excellent results in mathematics, logic, philosophy and English, and won a swag of medals and awards. ..."
