Hello I'm researching James Mulholland & Mary Mottram whose marriage was recorded in the register of the Christ Church Newcastle in 1847. I notice the BDM index states simply "Hexham; Newcastle; Christ Church". The minister was Charles Pleydell Wilton. I'm a tad confused. James states that he is of Hexham parish; Mary of "this parish". I was wondering where the church was/is and if the marriage would have taken place at Hexham or Newcastle. If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction that would be beaut. Dear Dorothy, At State Records "if they Survived" there is a file on each school. Some schools also have other records, such as an Admission Register. See www.records.nsw.gov.au where there is an Archives in Brief on the subjedt. There are two lots of records, one for the building, and one for the pupils. Also it should be in the Sands Directory of Sydney Residents, which will give you a location. The current council area is either Willoughby or North Sydney but be aware of possible boundary changes. I think the boundary maybeChristie Street at St Leonard Railway Station. It is the council area you will have to look under in the Sands Directory. Sincerely, Bill > I'm looking for "St Leonards Pub. Hello Dorothy, Are you looking in the Hunter Valley, or where?? It is possible there was a school with that name around the St.Leonards/ Naremburn area of Sydney at that period of time. It would be between Crows Nest and Willoughby. Liz Walker, Lake Macaquarie. Dorothy Moore wrote: > Hello List, > > I'm looking for "St Leonards Pub. The National Library of Australia has search engine which will allow you to search a number of databases in one pass: http://www.pictureaustralia.org/ You may prefer to search just the picture collection the Mitchell and Dixson Library using the PicMan search engine (but don't ignore the possibility that a great photo may be now living in Victoria or one of the other States): http://www2.sl.nsw.gov.au/picman/ If you are not sure how to construct your search, use the Thesaurus to find the right term: http://www.picturethesaurus.gov.au/ There is a clearinghouse for museums at (such as the Newcastle Regional Museum): http://www.collectionsaustralia.net/ Newcastle University has a wide and interesting set of collections. Start at: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/archives/ Newcastle City Council Library pictures might be found using: http://collections.ncc.nsw.gov.au/keemu/pages/nrm/index.htm You might find something held by the National Archives using: http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ResearcherScreen.asp Or cast your net wide using Google http://www.google.com/advanced_image_search?hl=en Yahoo! http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/advanced?ei=UTF-8 Or see what is available on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/ Try using Patrick Plains / Patrick's Plains instead of Singleton. Or use some other heritage terms such as: Burdekin Park Munro Fountain Percy Hotel / Horse and Jockey / Rose Inn Caledonian Hotel Ewbank Mechanics Institute Lonsdale Geraldine and Wade Cottages Singleton became a shire in 1976 so try the previous names: Singleton Municipal Council Patrick Plains Shire Council Perhaps names of historic homesteads: Bebeah, Ardesier, Townhead, Greenwood, Hambledon Hill, Abbey Green, Flowerbank or Crail. Through in a few qualifiers like Georgian style / Victorian style / Boom style / Edwardian style / Federation style to narrow down your period. Dianna. The NSW State Library has a lot of photos online. (Sorry I don't have the URL -- maybe others can provide it, or a google search might throw it up). I'd be very surprised if there are not LOTS of Singleton photos in their collections. Hi Ian, Donald and list Some may be aware that the Ireland-Australia transportation database covers only the period from about 1829 onwards. There are several Patrick Aherns arriving before 1828. The Archduke Charles did arrive in 1813-16th February. If Sarah was born in 1832 then you are probably looking for the son of convicts for the Patrick Ahern (presuming the two were of similar age)? Most good libraries will have copies of the BDM reels for pre 1856 The marriage of Patrick Ahern and Sarah Lynch occurred at Maitland V1847 877 vol 95 You might be lucky to have some indication about the status of both parties such as "born colony" or "native" and even better if there is another Ahern as witness or giving permission for two under aged parties to marry. Regards Lorraine > Ian asked But does anyone know who was Patrick? > > In "Mines, Wines and People" in the chapter on 'Landholders on the > south arm of Wollombi Brook' part iv Irish Lads: > Lynch-Chapman-Cagney-Moore-McMullen-Peter Byrne- Morton there is a > discussion of the LYNCH family: "IN THE SHIP Archduke Charles, which > sailed out of Cork in 1812, John Lynch, transported for seven years > arrived at Sydney in 1813. ..."; but "Ahearne" seems only to have a > mention in a list of names associated with landholdings in the area. > > >
Patrick Ahern who married Sarah Lynch was the son of Patrick Ahern and Mary Kiely. Patrick senior is the convict who was transported on the "Marquis of Huntley" in 1828. His wife Mary Kiely came as a convict on the "Elizabeth" in 1828 with young Patrick. Margaret (mentioned as having been granted free passage on the "Thomas Harrrison" in 1835 was one of Patrick and Mary's three children who were left behind in Ireland when they were transported to NSW. the other two, Bridget and John, had died in Ireland before Margaret came to NSW. Donald Kirkham a descendant of Mary Ann O'Haran, daughter of Patrick and Mary Ahern, born in NSW.
But does anyone know who was Patrick? In "Mines, Wines and People" in the chapter on 'Landholders on the south arm of Wollombi Brook' part iv Irish Lads: Lynch-Chapman-Cagney-Moore-McMullen-Peter Byrne- Morton there is a discussion of the LYNCH family: "IN THE SHIP Archduke Charles, which sailed out of Cork in 1812, John Lynch, transported for seven years arrived at Sydney in 1813. ..."; but "Ahearne" seems only to have a mention in a list of names associated with landholdings in the area. I have searched the 'Ireland-Australia transportation database' http://www.nationalarchives.ie for AHERN, AHEARN, AHERNE, AHEARNE, O'HERN, O'HEARN, O'HERNE, O'HEARNE and found the following: Lastname: AHERN Firstname: PATRICK Sex: M Age: 25 Trial place: Limerick Imprisonment place: Hulk Surprize Trial date: CA/00/1836 Crime desc: Cow stealing Sentence: Transportation life Document ref1: TR 1, P 152 Document date: 10/08/1836 Document ref1: CRF1836 Misc103 Lastname: AHERN Firstname: PATRICK Sex: M Trial place: Co Tipperary Ship: MARQUIS OF HUNTLEY 1828 Document ref1: FS 1835 List 1 Comment1: List of convicts who have applied for their wives and families to be sent to New South Wales at the expense of Government. Hi Louise, There is a Barbara Dorothy Rose (bc1928) married to a Robert Gosper who lives in the Manildra area of NSW. She was alive about 6 years ago. She used to do (maybe still does) voluntary work in the Manildra Visitors Centre. She was in the same class at school as my father and we used to see her at the Centre when we made trips to Manilda. The Sarah Lynch who married Patrick Ahern was the daughter of John Lynch, farmer of Wollombi, and his wife Sarah Pendegast. Sarah Lynch was born in 1832 in Wollombi, NSW (BDM NSW V18322129 127/1832). Donald
HI I am trying to help a friend with her tree she believes that an aunt Barbara ROSE who she last saw in Newcastle 12 June 1972 has done a lot of work already on the tree and was hoping that she may still be actively searching Louise
Hi Roseanne, Bill & Listers, I am afraid I know nothing of the origins of Patrick AHERN and am only hoping that the lass Sarah LYNCH may assist in resolving whether she may have been one of the three children who accompanied the convict Sarah LYNCHEY to Australia.
