    3. Anne, Thank you for the tip off with regards to the NLA newspaper website. I see the Maitland Mercury ranges from 1843 to 1893 with only about 17 of those years presently covered. Do you know when they will be uploading more years to the collection? Regards Brent

    3. Hi all My grandfather (Daniel Galvin) was a miner in the HV and on the NLA newspaper digitisation site I've been tagging mining related articles relating to the Hunter (also mining in and around Coen and the gold areas of Nth Qld if anyone has interests there). My Hunter related tags can be accessed on the NLA Newspaper digitisation site and include: Abedare Colliery, Hunter valley mines, Hunter valley mining accidents and Hunter Valley mine deaths. These will mainly refer to newspaper articles that you can access through the NLA site (see http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home ). I cannot overstate how great that site is and how it should be used by all family history researchers as well as people and students with an interest in, not only Australia's history, but how news from overseas was reported. I have found 190 references for one of my families in papers from all over Australia which I would never have expected. Admittedly they have an unusual name (German immigrants to the Hunter) but I have also found references to my Smiths as well in my searches. A fabulous resource! In the context of mines, general information, accidents and deaths the digitised newspapers are a very valuable resource. For those who haven't visited the site, it's the National Library of Australia site. Another great form of assistance for Australian residents is that you can sign up online and access a range of digital information. Hope this is useful Anne ----- Original Message ----- From: "terry " <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 2:17 PM Subject: Mineworkers Accidents and fatalaties > Good Afternoon, > > > > For those researchers who expressed interest in my data base ' > Mineworkers > Accidents and Fatalities', I have commenced adding the names to my web > site > at http://home.pacific.net.au/~tandd/RootFolder4/intro_mineworkers.html > > > Terry > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hello All. Following Marg's lead in providing us with new helpful web-sites which she discovers, this one just appeared on one of my Irish lists. http://www.belfast-gazette.co.uk >From the home-page where that link opens up, there are options on the top left for the London Gazette and for the Edinburgh Gazette, as well. They appear to be something like our present Government Gazettes here in Oz; and/or like our original Sydney Gazette -- but only posting official notices, not general news items etc. I've just spent hours on the site, sadly without finding any relevant 'hits', but hoping that listers might find something of value in it -- as it goes waaaay back. Good Luck. Ray

    3. Hello again Phillip. Thanks for this. What a great bit of local and family history that item makes. I wonder if they were grateful that it didn't collapse whilst they were walking on it. I was not aware that the bridge had collapsed. When I searched under "Long Bridge" Maitland at the National Library of Australia pictures web-site, there were lots of photos of concrete work being constructed on the bridge, which I was unaware of; so this would now explain it. At the time of the flood, Phillip, we were living in the western suburbs of Sydney, and being a kid, I had no idea at that stage that the family had originated in Maitland, still living almost adjoining the Long Bridge at the time of the flood -- in Bull Street, formerly called Thompson's Lane -- on the eastern side, on my John THOMPSON ancestor's original Veteran's land grant which had stretched right across from Thompson's Lane to Regent Street; so from the photos at the NLA, it would seem that the entire grant would have looked like a river then. Phew! Thanks for sharing this interesting item. Regards again: Ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phillip Carruthers" <[email protected]> ... 3. Thank you to Ian & Bill for your helpful replies. I spose nailing down the actual location of these ECR ceremonies involves a bit of guesswork. It's not unusual for them to be well over 100km from the church. I'm pretty satisfied though that this one took place aroundabouts the current setting of Christ Church cathedral. Regards Brent

    3. Thank you Peter, Jan, Mike, Payne & Joe for your helpful answers. I made a copy from the microfilm, it says at the top "Parish of Christ Church Newcastle, County of Northumberland". Why the index church reference code "CH" includes Hexham I don't know; there certainly is a lands parish of Hexham, Co. Northumberland but that doesn't appear to extend east of Wallsend. My James Mulholland was "of Hexham parish" whilst his bride Mary Mottram was "of this parish" i.e. Newcastle. In this instance I think the mention of Hexham is a red herring and the 1847 marriage must have literally taken place at Christ Church in Church Street, Newcastle. Regards Brent

    3. Dear Brent and Jan, We should remember that prior to civil registration the records are church records, and show the district for that particular church, which may be different for another church in their boundaries. Some of the churches had roving Ministers, and registrations for events which took place weeks ago might have been recorded when the Clergy was next back at his church, having been on the road on horseback. Forget about jumping into the air conditioned fast car on good (maybe) roads and be in Sydney in a few hours. It took a week or so then. 3. Brent, Good evening. Would suggest you obtain a copy of the marriage certificate (or Transcript) as it is quite possible the event did not actually take place in a church. I had a similar problem where the records showed the same as yours (which was prior to civil registration). Mine actually took place at the brides place of residence in the Upper Hunter. The marriage document shows "Marriage solemnized in the Parish of Christchurch Newcastle, in the County of Northumberland in the year 1832, then goes on to nominate the names of the bride and groom and where the ceremony took place and the names of the witnesses etc. The reference in the NSW BDM's shows the place as "CH" which as you probably know is the code for Hexham; Newcastle Christ Church. Trust this helps. 3. Hello Liz, Bill, Jenny, thank you - Grannie's book states "St Leonards Pub. Girls School Sept.1889" and is signed "L.P.Dixson". In the book Government Schools of New South Wales, the St Leonards school was a Special Public School in 1889 - so I'm missing the 'Girls' word. I'll look in the Archives in Brief and also the Sands. And yes, I am looking in the Hunter Valley - unless of course this school was for boarders - which I hadn't really considered, but I think the family would have been financial. many thanks, this is a very helpful and informative list. regards dorothy
