The thing is Ray ... we WERE recycling way back then, long before it became environmentally trendy and one person's junk could be destined to be another's treasure. Times sure have changed, but it is a good story nonetheless. Hi Everyone I am having a reunion in April this year and trying to locate where Bunaba/Burnarba station would have been in 1883. As this is where my Ancestor James Walton died. South of Benarba is the Parish of Boollmuekeldi (Then their is North Benarba) Moree is the Parish of Couralie. If any one can help with the location it would be much appreciated. On James Walton's Death Certificate G H Paine was the informant Bunaba Station 14/10/1883. Grahame James

Excellent observation, Bruce! They'd complain about the risks to public safety by scavengers climbing over tips etc. and public liability; and then about doing licenced scavengers out of their business -- if any such licenced scavengers still exist. No-one got sued as far I recall, when we were kids scavenging over open public tips to our hearts' content; and if we were injured in doing so, we'd suffer at the hands of our parents when we got home; and it would not be taken any further. I don't believe in those "golden" days of old; but by golly there are times when I don't like the way that some things in public life have turned out in the present day. Thanks for the comment. I'm glad that you posted it. Yes, and how popular would someone be in 2011 of they were scavenging AND taking home big heaps of stuff from any of our "Waste Disposal and Recycling Centres"?? Lisa, I found more on my relative Peter page who died after being run up against a sign post on his horse on the newspapers digitized online than I found in the NSW records, you just have to look, police or government gazettes give you anything or there could be nothing... >From today's SMH ... SAVED FROM THE TIP - A GOOD DROP ON WINEMAKING HISTORY It is almost 50 years since a man scavenging on a rubbish tip in Cessnock discovered a box of discarded documents, telegrams and letters and took them to his mate, Bill Chapman, a coalminer. There were about 3500. So it took Mr. Chapman, now 79, endless hours to decipher the handwritten scrawl, sort them and protect them in plastic folders. Twice he moved - and twice the papers moved with him. Now those same papers have been handed over to the State Library of NSW, which has recognised the Cessnock tip find as a historical treasure trove; a unique documentary record of Australia's oldest continuously operating commercial vineyard, Wyndham Estate, formerly known as Dalwood, in the Hunter Valley. Hi again Ken Opps ! forgot to mention there is also a slim booklet that should be hiding very near to the films. Perhaps on top of the film cabinet, in the drawer with the films ? that tells you how the indexing was done and which film you need to look up a particular record . Even with the parish info & correct film ,these films arent particularly user friendly . Transcriptions cost about $10........... Could be money well spent ? bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin
Ken, Go into the NSW BDM site and find the pre-1856 entry, it will have the V prefix. There is/was also a link on the site for the church codes. I think the film reel nos. for 1788-1856 are in the AO 5000 series which defies the page entry details. To find the actual page entry... eg V1845***+++ or V1845****++ and possibly a church code after the entry - this church code will be the parish church or specific church where your entry was recorded. this equates to year 1845 the *** is the number on the film a digit between 1 and up to thousands, the +++ is the actual film roll nos. between 1 and 123 from memory. eg year 1846 entry no. 586 film no. 95 keeping in mind the title bearing the right church name on top of the page as you scroll through. The films in the ARK kit are found at most council head libraries in NSW. Hope this explanation is of help, Jenny

Hi Ken This is one of life's little mysteries................ why the on line NSW indexes of baptism & burial records show no parish details, while marriages do ??? The Pioneer CD 1788- 1888, published on CD & fiche in 1992 does list all parish names and denominations . You give no clue as to your location so your 'local library' could be anywhere. I would be very surprised know they had these early church record films and not the Pioneers CD/ fiche ??? Pretty sure the original separate BDM indexes 1877 - 1905 , on fiche only, published in 1982 also have parish info . Been awhile since I checked these Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin
Following advice from Listers I found that our local library had the Archives Resources Kit, which includes the NSW Register of baptisms, burials and marriages 1787-1856. Short Guide 4 lists the range of Reels for records from various church denominations. C of E baptisms are Reels 5001-5016 and Presyterian baptisms are Reels 5001 -5019. I went to the library and was pleased to see that the photo copies of the original parish entries are mostly good. I would like to see the records of some marriages and baptisms in a particular Hunter Parish. I know the dates, but don't know all the denominations. I looked at several reels but found the arrangement of the records on each was almost random. It would be a very large task to find even one particular record from 19 reels. I suppose that when the reels were compiled a record was made of what was in each, so presumably there is a detailed index somewhere. Can someone please tell me how to find it ? Ken Thompson
Hello Ken. I have NOT ever gone down this particular pathway, so these thoughts MIGHT be WRONG! Take care therefore with what follows. My understanding is that the NSW Registrar of BDMs, has in the online indexes to BDMs, entries relating to ALL of the records in those earlier church registers. (Excepting of course those which were missed during the indexing process, and also mistranscriptions might appear anywhere on the indexes). Therefore, if I am correct, then if you use the online NSW BDM indexes, searching for your relevant names, they should throw up ALL of those above church register entries. THEN, again if I understand it correctly, you can use the VOLUME and REFERENCE numbers given at the start of the relevant BDM index results, to FIND the correct VOLUMES to be searching in the ARK reels. You will probably also be aware that for MARRIAGES ONLY, these online indexes provide a 'translation' of CHURCH CODES in the results; but they haven't seemed to bother to extend a similar process for the early Births and Deaths. If I am WRONG in any of this, it would help us all if listers would post corrections here, so that we might all learn from them. Nevertheless: HTH. Hi All, Looking for anyone else who may be researching the family of John Stephen (Jack) Davoren, son of Patrick Davoren and Mary Kerin. Jack married Mary Josephine McDermott in 1897, and died in 1938. He was closely associated with winemaking in the Hunter Valley, and with Dalwood Estate in particular. thanks, Sharon McDermott
Hello Everyone & compliments of the season to you. I encountered this 4-page pdf article during my googling session today. It was seemingly the second place-getter for a Janet Reakes memorial award. Here is the URL: http://www.janetreakesgenealogy.com/MemorialAward/2005JRMA2.pdf It is primarily about William GARNER or GARDNER and his wife Catherine BIRD, both convicts who were married by Reverend Father John Joseph THERRY, and who later, by 1844, settled at East Maitland. A daughter: Mary Ann GARNER married Thomas LEONARD, and there is brief mention of LEONARD landholdings in East Maitland. HTH someone. Ray
Best wishes for the festive season to all, especially to Marg, our wonderful administrator. Marje
