Hello The Lists Sorry for the cross postings The forward is from the post re Tara Newtown Many thanks for the help and the forward is a post from Marie Power Again thanks John & Shirley Smith Maitland Area Lower Hunter Valley NSW Australia smiths@hunterlink.net.au -----Original Message----- From: Paul & Marie Power [mailto:FernhillRd@bigpond.com] Sent: Wednesday, 4 December 2002 3:09 PM To: smiths@hunterlink.net.au Subject: Newtown Connection Dear John and Shirley thank you very much for all your assistance and would you please pass on my thanks to your contacts. The first one from Helen Dickinson re the NSW BDM's Hilda May Phillips marriage to John Stanley Power yes that is the correct one and the death of David Phillips at Laurieton SMH 11/5/94 very interesting, we are going up to Pt Macquarie this weekend so will see if I can find the grave. I do have the address for SMH death notices. Also will contact Margaret Phillips re her research into the Phillips family. >From Lesley Yes I suspected it was a home for unwed mothers. Gran also was living at 90 Stanmore Road Stanmore which is a stones throw from Edgeware Rd and I suspect that the same people owned this building as the ones who owned Tara. But not as yet been able to properly establish this. Please pass on thanks to H Dickinson re info on Edgeware Road and Newtown in general, very helpful >From Tony Moore I will email archives and see what I can get >From Betty Candy I did look at the Newtown website when I first started looking some months ago but there was nothing helpful will try again. Last one from Helen Dickinson re her contact with the Local Studies Librarian at Marrickville I also contacted them when I first started looking and was from there that I discovered the owner of Tara in 1913. Just to fill you in on this, I was told that the owner in 1913 was Henry T Rozea, a dentist so I researched the Rozea family and thought I was on to something when I found that Henry T and his wife had a daughter in 1911 and the daughter died in 1912. I thought perhaps they had arranged adoption of Gran's baby after they lost their own however I went on to discover that Mrs Rozea committed suicide in March 1913 and as Gran's baby was born in October 1913 it would have been highly unlikely that adoption was the case. A friend in Qld, after I had told her of this, also looked up the Sands Directory and realised that it was like the White Pages and printed a year in advance and discovered that in the 1914 edition Tara was owned by Mrs Starkie and was a private hospital. I have followed Jenny Fawcett's advice and sent letters to all the ministers in charge of the mainstream churches in that area and am waiting to see what I get from that. There are a number of different churches there now for instance The Rock Christian Faith Centre and the Church of the Foursquare Gospel which I didn't bother with as I am sure they weren't' t around in 1913. We are having our family Christmas get together this weekend at Pt Macquarie leaving early Friday morning, so will be unable to do anything else now until next week as I have to prepare food, pack etc. Once again thank you to yourselves and all your contacts, people are very kind aren't they? Bye for now Marie Power FernhillRd@bigpond.com
