(Diane has successfully extracted me from a corner with her encouragement re places in the Hills District!) My BROWN family lived for many years in the home named "Brislington" on the corner of George and Marsden Sts Parramatta. I'd love to hear from anyone who has connections to the home or to the family who were Drs in Parramatta for over 90 years. One family I'd particularly like to contact is the SPIERS family. Mr Sam Spiers was coachman, gardener and much respected helper of the family for many decades. I have some pages on my website for the BROWNS and their ancestors in Brislington Somerset if any reader is interested. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~anncarson/Brown/bro wnfrontpage.htm Regards Ann Carson annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au BORTHWICK Worldwide One Name Study (GoONS 3727)
Hi Ann, Just a bit of trivia in regards to "Brislington" ... "Legend has it that convict John HODGES won a fortune at a card game in the Woolpack Inn and used the money to erect this building, originally intended for an inn. A pattern of cards (his winning hand) was built into the building's rear brick wall. Completed in 1821" [C. Rivett]. According to an 1822 map of the town of Parramatta, John HODGES is listed as the proprietor/occupier of that (corner) block; and he also had a second smaller allotment within the block bounded by Phillip, Marsden, George and Church Streets. Regards, Diane ... and by the way Ann <grin> do you happen to have anyone else in the corner there with you ? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Carson" <annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au> Subject: [H,H,HV] Parramatta - Brislington and the Brown Family > (Diane has successfully extracted me from a corner with her > encouragement re places in the Hills District!) > My BROWN family lived for many years in the home named > "Brislington" on the corner of George and Marsden Sts > Parramatta.
