I have noticed mentioned amongst the many e-mails about the RAISBECK surname the name of Agnes BALANTYNE. I was wondering if anyone knows if she was the same Agnes that was the daughter of George BALLANTYNE and Mary SMITH who lived around the Branxton area. They were my third great-grandparents. If she is I would be appreciative of any info on her such as children etc. I have her listed in my files as married to a T. RAISBECK with a ? beside it but I have never fully investigated her. Thanks Valerie Green greenv@mpx.com.au
Valerie, I have not gone down the line of Ballantyne yet, but Mary Smith, what are her parents details. Not another connection to the Hall family is she? If so there are a number of us who would be able to help you. The T Raisbeck stands for Thomas. My gg grandmother Bridget Sweeney/Freel married William Raisbeck, son of Thomas Raisbeck and Elizabeth Bowen. I think it was William's brother Thomas who married Agnes Ballantyne. Bridget's marriage to William Raisbeck was her second. I am descendant from her first husband James Freel. Looking forward to hearing from you. Hello Valerie, I am just going through my old emails and came across yours. Lately I have been speaking to a Janet and Ray Raisbeck who is descendant from Henry Raisbeck and Agnes Ballentine/Henry Raisbeck and Alice Gordon. We have been exchanging information, and I have done some more research on the family. This is what I know: Henry Raisbeck born circa 1769 married Ann Simpson on 2.4.1798 at Ronaldkirk, Cumbria he died on 8.3.1823 (off the net - to be confirmed Ray has contacted a researcher). Children: Thomas born 14.8.1808 Sarah born 9.4.1801 Henry born 18.8.1803 Jane born 14.8.1805 Edward born 8.5.1807 Ralph Simpson born 3.1.1811 To date I haven't been able to find the shipping of Thomas Raisbeck into the colony but note the following on the "Edward Oliver" in 1856 Anne 5 Anne 42 Benjamin 18 George 48 Mary 15 William 12 I still need to look at this reel as there may have been a miss spell in the transcriptions, and Thomas may still be there as a relative under unmarried men. Thomas's death certificate states that he arrived in the colony circa 1845. Thomas Raisbeck married Elizabeth Bowen on 12.1.1847. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Bowen arrived "Magnet" 1827 with his wife Elizabeth. Both aged 27 years. Elizabeth jnr was born 20.1.1828 at Maitland, her brother Thomas born on 1.1.1832 never married, died 7.1.1851 (reconveyance of land holdings states death dates of both William & Thomas) William Bowen died 6.4.1850 - have not as yet found any obituary. The children of Thomas Raisbeck and Elizabeth Bowen Included: William born at Branxton 14.11.1847 he married Bridget Sweeney/Freel 23.12.1909 after a long partnership, and died 29.9.1920 at Branxton. (Bridget is my gg grandmother) Henry born 1848 at Branxton married Agnes Ballentine in 1872 Thomas born 1851 died 11.9.1856 William & Bridget's children included: Maria born 2.3.1863 at Branxton died 20.8.1868 Rebecca born 26.12.1869 at Branxton died 3.1.1870 Manassah born 12.3.1871 at Branxton married Martha R Geary 15.1.1900 died 26.3.1947 Possibly William Henry born 24.12.1865 Branxton, married Bridget Kenna 3.12.1884,died 12.9.1935 at Parramatta. (There is some doubt as to whether he is William's son or that of James Freel. The latter disappearing sometime after 1861 - William or Henry sometimes called himself Raisbeck or Freel, and his wife died as Freel.) Henry Raisbeck and Agnes Ballentine's children included: Mary born 1871 at Cassilis married 1. Frederick Gore 1888, 2. Charles Hughes 1898 Henry born 28.10.1872 at Branxton married Alice Gordon 26.1.1898 he died 21.8.1941 Thomas born 1875 at Maitland married Violet Davy/Davey (his children included Charles the Painter and Phyllis Rosina Raisbeck the Opera Singer- the latter still alive). George born 1877 at Maitland died 30.6.1882 Agnes Died and Henry remarried Emily Louisa Macey on 15.9.1920. There were no children to this marriage. I am only too happy to give you Ray's snail mail address if you would like it. Unfortunately he is not on email. Hoping you have a merry Christmas.
