Hello Lesley. For quite a while I have been trying to build up a database on everyone of the HAWKINS name in NSW -- mainly by using the BD&M indexes. Consequently, I went to my workings after reading your posting (which I have left in its entirety below for you to refer to), and I became quite confused. My database shows a marriage in 1879 of an Edwd J. HAWKINS to Emma LEGGE. Please note that this gives his name in an abbreviated form as Edward -- and NOT as Edwin. It could be that this is a transcription error. However the name Edward seems to be confirmed when the Index shows in 1887 the birth of Lilian C. HAWKINS, and in 1900 the birth of Elsie G. HAWKINS -- both to "Edward J" and Emma HAWKINS. Now, the database also shows entries for Edwin J. HAWKINS and Emma, as parents of 9 children (with a couple of names which you don't give in your list). So this leads me to ask whether your information is mainly or solely obtained from reading the BD&M indexes, or mainly from an independent family source? Sadly, I do not have much further information to assist you, but I'd be grateful to have this cleared up, as I had them listed as two distinct families. Thanks in advance should you take the trouble to reply. -------Original Message------- Hello Ray, My family is Edwin John Hawkins b: 1853 (Portsmouth, England), who is listed in the NSW BDM as Edward he married Emma Legge (who I have just discovered was actually Emma Sadler) in 1879 in Newcastle. They had 12 children as follows Edith May b:1878 Maria b:1881 d: 1885 Ida b: 1883 Edwin b:1885 Lillian b: 1887 Ivy b: 1889 Richard b: 1891 William b: 1894 Harold b: 1897 d: 1897 Percy b: 1899 d: 1899 Elsie b: 1900 Lola b: 1903 I am sure all these are his, as they are all listed on their death certificates. When I first started trying to track them down it was very confusing because his name kept on changing was Edwin to Edward and back. I have not idea why. I do think there was another family of Hawkins in Wickham where they lived, I do not know if there was a connection yet. I have not been successful in tracking down his entry into Australia yet, but I estimate it to be around 1875 to 1878. I hope this helps. I just posted those names as I had just discovered a whole new branch to the family.
