    3. Place Name : East Maitland Some extracts from this morning's Daily Telegraph (Sydney), Friday July 26, 2002 : "Like voices from the grave, an historic Hunter Valley pioneer cemetery is coming back to life with the aid of modern technology. The Glebe Cemetery at East Maitand is one of the oldest in Australia and is the final resting place of more than 200 of the country's convict, pioneers and settlers ..... " " The Glebe Cemetery website, a joint project between Maitland City Council and students from the University of New England, is part of a conservation program for the graveyard. So far $45,000 has been spent on an archaeological survey of the site and restoration of 17 monuments and headstones. More work is expected to follow". "James TRIMBY (1792-1828) was the first person buried there. Burials continued on the site for at least 70 years. James TRIMBY's father, Joseph TRIMBY (1747-1836) was a convict member of the First Fleet (1788) ship 'Friendship' and is buried in the same grave as his son". "Another Hunter Valley pioneer buried at the cemetery is Police Magistrate Edward Denny DAY ... he also tracked down Teddy "The Jewboy" DAVIS and his gang of bushrangers. DAY died aged 60 and was buried in 1876". "Unmarked grave number 224 is believed to belong to Australia's first colonial architect Francis GREENWAY .... " "The weatherbeaten headstones that dot the Glebe cemetery offer a glimpse of just how difficult life was in Australia's early years. Some examples : * Henry George ADAMS, 12, drowned 14th Dec. 1878 at Lake Macquarie, son of Henry John and Mary ADAMS * Jane CANNON, 50, died 20th Oct. 1852, killed by falling off a dray * Barbara EVANS, 23, died 8th Dec. 1833, left husband and 2 children * George LYNDOP, 34, Private 80th Rgt., died 6th June, 1841, by bursting gun * Margaret Ann JACKSON, 37, died 22nd Jan. 1852, accidently killed by a dray in Maitland * William MINOR, 50, died 3rd Sept. 1885, fell from jail wall at work " "While the cemetery's historical significance was never in doubt, it was neglected until a couple of years ago when Maitland City Council began a restoration program .... " The complete article (with photos) can be read on page 19, and the website address for the Glebe Cemetery project is : http://www-personal.une.edu.au/~pgrave/StPeters/index.htm Like they say ... better late, than never :) Regards, Diane
