    3. Sorry, Michelle, I thought I was responding to the entire list! Adelaide de la Thoreza was Mr. Smith's mother. Indeed, she was from Sapin and, yes, her father was murdered. Days later, her mother died and she was sent to live with a guardian in London. While there, she was arrested and tried for theft. As for Alfred Smith, to this day, no-one is positive who his father is, most of us in the family doubt that it was John Smith. Be that as it may, Adelaide had an interesting life, indeed, coming to Australia as a convict, assigned to the Cox family at Hobartville. There is a book about her life: "A Checquered Career," if anyone is interested. There are also two professors, one at the University of Madrid, who are researching her life. She was actually married to John Masters, an artist, whom she met at Hobartville. I understand some of his art still exists and is hanging in public buildings in NSW to this day. They had two children, one of which was Thomas Masters, Alfred Smith's half brother and best friend, and my g.g.grandfather. >From: "Michelle Nichols" <michelle_nichols@hotmail.com> >To: AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [H,H,HV] Some Ups and Downs of an Old Richmondite >Date: Thu, 22 May 2003 11:45:29 +1000 > >Yesterday Ross Downie reprinted an article by Joan Mullens from the 1980s >in which she mentions the series of articles titled "Some Ups and Downs of >an Old Richmondite" which were reproduced in the Windsor & Richmond Gazette >in the period 1909-1910.
