I read in the Daily Telegraph on Friday about the wilful damage done to Waverley Cemetery during the week, $50,000 damage.....it is sad that these sacred markers are destroyed by thoughtless idiots. On another note re cemeteries, the Hawkesbury Gazette (15.1.2003 p. 15) reports that 2 graves dating from the 1830s are to be relocated from the Windsor Catholic Cemetery due to RTA road widening for flood free access. Macquarie Street is to be widened as part of this process and the grave of Thomas Gill who died 1833 and another unreadable stone will be relocated within the cemetery. These would be some of the oldest headstones in the cemetery. Hi Michelle, one and all, I just don't get it ... WHY do people do this ? I'm sure that THEIR forebears would be rolling in their graves, so to speak ... if they knew ! A very sad indictment indeed.
