Hi I am also researching a William Horton at Paterson. This one arrived on the Mangles in 1833 and was assigned to JP Webber (the owner of the Tocal property which is very close to Swan's block). His occupation was "shoemaker, tolerable". He was probably transferred to the service of Caleb and Felix Wilson when they bought Tocal in 1834 (a shoemaker is listed on the list of convicts transferred). In 1836/37 (according to the 1837 Muster) he was with J Adair at Paterson (a friend of James Webber's). He received his Ticket of Leave for the Paterson district in 1845 and a Conditional Pardon in 1850. He is probably the William Horton who married Emma ALLUM in Paterson in 1847. A William Horton died at Paterson in 1865 (I am not a descendant so I cannot work backwards to confirm it is the same man) For some general info on convict life at Tocal/Paterson in the 1820s and 1830s see my web pages at: http://www.tocal.com/homestead/vandv/index.html regards Brian Walsh >Have only recently been receiving these messages which I find very interesting. > >My brother Max & I have been researching William Horton who came to Australia as a convict in 1832. Worked at Patterson NSW for a John Swan, then moved on to work for William Ogilvie & John Cox. William then joined the explorer Henry Stuart Russell before becoming the owner of properties in Toowoomba & Ipswich & the famous Bullshead Inn at Drayton. Does anyone have knowledge of William Horton? We would love to know more. > > >
