"20 Aug 1904 & 11 Feb 1905" CURRAN, David. 45 Pte AFC Enl 26 May 15 D, POW 16 Jun 17 David Curran was born at Mallard, Rahold, Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland, the son of Samuel and Esther Curran, of that address. Described as a carpenter, he was an employee of Hay Brothers sawmill at Kendall when he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corps on the 26th May 1915 as an air mechanic. From the Official History of Australia at War, it seems that hen arrived at Basra, Mesopotamia, (now Iraq) on the 1st September 1915 as part of the Australian Half Flight, AFC. Among a party of 44 NCOs and airmen, they were besieged by the Turks at Kut, which finally surrendered on the 29th April 1916. The 13,000 prisoners were marched 700 miles to Anatolia and hundreds died by the wayside from exposure, fatigue and starvation . Of the 44 airmen, only six survived the march.
