Abraham MILLS who arrived on the "Moffat" in August 1836 is a much researched gggrandfather of mine about whom I am trying to fill in 'gaps' regarding his exact whereabouts and circumstances during his early years in Australia. I would appreciate comments or information on the following: On arrival in 1836 went from his ship to Hyde Park Barracks and then assigned to "Engineers" later surfacing in Maitland where he received his TOL on recommendation of the Magistrate in Paterson. He is understood to have been a timber getter but:- Does anyone have specific information on his placement or work during the 1836 to 1841 period ??? On receiving his TOL he was to marry, Nov 1843 Moprpeth, to a Margaret GURR (nee GANT) who had arrived in Australia (coincidently on the same vessel "Moffat" in 1841) married to and pregnant by George GURR. Margaret and George show in the 1841 Hunter Valley Directory as living in Glendon, in the valley in 1841, but then Margaret marries Abraham. Does anyone know any details of the apparent demise of George GURR in or near Glendon, Maitland, Morpeth (or elsewhere) between January to November 1841 ??? Following the birth of their first child, William in 1844, Abraham and Margaret baptise him and register the birth of their second child Maria, in Kissing Point/Dundas before apparently returning to Stroud/Booral for the birth of third child James in 1848. Does anyone have further information of possible family movements during these years and or the likelihood of such a movement by an ex- convict and new family from the Hunter to Dundas and return in these years .... ie; down and up the Gt Nth Road etc. ??? William PACEY who arrived on the "Countess of Harcourt" in September 1828 and to whom I am similarly related was also assigned to 'The Engineers' but became a Hunter Valley based convict and TOL worker and about whom I am seeking similar fill in information: Does anyone have information on his real placement and location in the Hunter in the timber industry from 1828 to TOL date ??? The PACEY family are in the Hunter Valley directory for 1841 at Upper Paterson which apparently refers to settlement known as THALABA or The THALABA Estate which was probable meeting place of William with Abraham above. Does anyone have information on activities/location of Thalaba in relation to timber gathering, somewhere possible south-east of Dungog, 1840 - 1860 ????? Looking forward to all and any information Thank you all, Peter QUIRK, Nelson Bay
Peter There is a death registered for George Gurr, Registration Number V18431080 27B/1843 with NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. It says he was 31, but does not give his father or mother's names or the district in which he died.
