Ian, this is only a guess. My guess is that either or both of them was/were Roman Catholic, and that they felt at the time that it was "politic" to marry in the C of E church; but with the imminent birth of a child, they wanted the sacrament to be blessed in his/her/their own faith. My own C of E great, great, grandfather was married at Maitland in the early 1830s (sorry my genealogy program is malfunctioning so I cannot confirm the date) to his Roman Catholic wife, in a Roman Catholic ceremony at Maitland, performed by the Reverend Father John Joseph THERRY. Some of their children were baptised in the Roman Catholic church there, others in the Church of England church there. All very confusing! Good luck with your "hunt".
