Hi All This last weekend I spent some time driving in the Spencer, Wiseman's Ferry, St. Albans areas and am interested in knowing more about them. I am aware of some novels set in these towns but would like the names of non fiction books which tell the actual history. I believe that Kate Grenville has also written about her ancestor Samuel Wiseman and wonder just how much near the truth it is. I am aware that it is a novel but is it near the truth? Can someone please help with suggestions of good reading matter concerning that area. Regards Shirley Shirley McLeod [email protected]

Hello Shirley, An interesting book about the Wiseman's Ferry and Macdonald River area is called 'The ferry, the branch and the creek', published by the Dharug and Lower Hawkesbury Historical Society (revised edition 2002). The contact address for the society is PO Box Wisemans Ferry NSW 2775. You can also ask for the book by inter-library loan via your local library. Hawkesbury Library at Windsor has copies for loan. Best wishes, Cathy McHardy
Hi Shirley I've spoken to Kate Grenville & she said the first part of the book The Secret River is firmly based on researched facts but the second part - ie relations with the aboriginals - she made up on the basis of what was documented in other parts of the settlement at various times. I agree that Searching for the Secret River is a must given your interests!
