Those who watched the "Who do you think we are" program SUnday evening may not be aware that the interesting Dr Thomas Parmeter 1790-1836 (Maggie Beer's ancestor) also worked in the Hawkesbury as a medical practicioner from 1818 until 1825. According to the Hawkesbury Pioneer Register Vol. 1, three of his children to Jane Meredith were born in Windsor. Maria Ann b 1817 Castle Hill, Francis Bland b 1819 Sydney, 4. Harriett Australia b Mar 1824 Windsor d Nov 1824 Windsor, Harriett Catherine b 1825 Windsor d 1876 Warkworth m 1841 William Scott. Maggie's ancestor Thomas Randall b 11-6-1822 Windsor d 12-9-1904 Warkworth m 10-4-1845 West Maitland, Catherine Allen. Jane Meredith m 1827 Warkworth to Walter Rotton. As mentioned in the program Dr Parmeter was a reasonablt prolific writer and some his accounts were published in the Sydney Gazette. The following is quite interesting, and was published in the Sydney Gazette 14 July 1825: "One rainy evening I was sent for close to the Cornwallis, it was in a hovel, a poor woman was in a difficult labour. The midwife that sent for me was a poor ignorant wretch. In the adjoining apartment, there was a set of ragged rogues replenishing themselves with some rum. I soon dispersed them, and by daylight a beautiful boy was born. The woman, from a wrapped up rag, offered me two guineas; I took but one, and the other I threw in the infant's lap, & told the nurse to get some covering for the poor object. The morning was fine, the birds were singing, and my horse galloped away, seemed quite delighted. What a strange metamorphosis when I next visited my poor patient! Clean crockery, new chairs, & fresh covering upon the bed, put a new satisfaction around the room. I was as much pleased, as when I visited a rich patient, near Richmond, & received five guineas, & slept upon down. I forgot to mention that I was obliged to use a bucket for a night-cap, and for blankets old bags, for the roof was too porous, and the elements most shockingly played the whole of the night." Hi Michelle, Thanks very much for your e-mail. I watched the programme last night. He was a very "interesting" Ancestor for Maggie to have wasn't he? I wonder exactly where in the district he lived, as he mentioned Cornwallis in his article you quoted. Fancy being able to write such a piece about the situation he found there. Still, there was a happy ending. Part of my family also had a connection with Cockfighters Creek - where he went after he left the Hawkesbury, but as he died in 1836 he was no longer there in 1838 & 1841 when my 2nd cousins (4GR) were born. This series has been as interesting as previous ones. The fact that Jane Meredith 'took up with' and eventually married Walter Rotton (what a name), reminded me of the Gorrick/Leeson(Lisson) situation in the Hawkesbury which part of my family married into. The children really didn't know who their fathers were. Of well, it makes life interesting. Once again for your interesting e-mail. H Michelle I was also interested in last night's show as soon as I heard the name Walter Rotton. When Walter married Jane Meredith one of their daughters Jane Ann Rotton married my 1st cousin 4 times removed John SINGLETON I also think it has been a good series Regards Lynette ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norma McLean" <normabmc@bigpond.com> To: <aus-nsw-hills-hawkesbury-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 26, 2009 1:24 PM Subject: Re: [HHHV] Dr Parmeter > Hi Michelle, > > Thanks very much for your e-mail.
