    1. [HHHV] CHARLOTTE AUGUSTA PEARCE/JAMES SMITH DESCENDANTS & INFO
    2. Kelly Anderson
    3. Hi All I have recently discovered a connection with the Pearce family in Seven Hills. My husband descends from Charlotte Augusta Pearce and her husband James Smith. I am not 100% on the information that I have found about James Smith so I am asking if anyone can assist. This is what I have found: 1. Born approx 1801 in London 2. May have been an orchardist. 3. Assisted in building the bricks for a school in Seven Hills. 4. Resided at a property called Bellevue (I do not know where this is) in Baulkham Hills (according to the early newspapers). I have not yet found any land grants. 5. Resided in Bannaby for a period of time but not yet sure why. This is where he may have met Charlotte Augusta Pearce. 6. I have no idea if he was a free settler or a convict. 7. Also had a relationship with Charlotte Roughley (who also married Henry Greenacre Whall and Solomon Moss) producing 2 possibly 3 children. I am aware of ther books written on the Roughley family. 8. Died 9 Jul 1863 at Bellevue, Baulkham Hills, of an unexplained Head injury. 9. Buried St Johns Parramatta. 10. He had a number of children including Matthew Smith, Eliza Maria Smith, James Pearce Smith, Charlotte Pearce Smith, Martha Smith (our ancestor), William Smith and George Pearce Smith. 11. Following the death of James, his chattels and farming equipment was sold off at Matthew Smith's property (not sure where this is, but it was described as 6 miles from Parramatta at Baulkham Hills). My husband descends from James and Charlotte's daughter Martha Smith (married James Smith Ross), who, along with James, gave evidence at a murder trial involving William Rogers and Joseph Allsop (the victim). I am also looking for anyone who is a descendant or who is also researching this tree. If anyone can assist, it would be appreciated. Kelly

    3. Dear Kelly, Have you looked on the Parish maps for the property? There would have been an Inquest because of the head injury, so have you looked for a news report of this? It is most unlikely that you would find an Inquest file, as most did not survive for that period, but the newspaper report might be found on the National Library website. I am not sure if that era has yet been digitised. Have you checked his Probate Packet at Kingswood? If he is not listed on the Claim a Convict site, he probably was not a convict, but may show up on www.records.nsw.gov.au in a name check for both shipping and Probate. Sincerely,Bill > 4. 3. HI Kelly James Smith was a convict. The reason I know this is because he applied for permission to marry Charlotte in 1833. James was one of the two convicts of that name who arrived on the Indefatigable (2) in 1815. One of them was tried at the Bristol Session of Peace, Oyer & Terminer & Gaol Delivery in April 1814 and was 38 when he arrived. The other was tried in London in 1814 and he was 14 years of age when he arrived. This one received a Conditional Pardon in 1834 and I would say that this was the one who married Charlotte. He was born about 1801 in London.
