Sydney,-- The birth of 285 children were recorded in Sydney, viz.:-- 161 boys and 134 girls, being 97 more than the deaths, and 28 below the quinquennial average. The deaths numbered 188, viz.:-- 108 of males and 80 of females being 21 less than the average of the month from 1882 to 1886. Diseases of the local class were most fatal in there results, and bore a proportion of 42.02 percent to total deaths. Primary causes - apoplexy, 6; convulsions, 9; heart diseases, 14; pneumonia, 5; and dentition, enteritis, and peritonitis, for each. Of specific febrile or zymotic diseases (18.02 percent.) 2 deaths were from measles, 3 from scarlatina, 17 from diarrhea, 4 from congenital syphilis, &c The proportion of constitutional diseases was 18.62 percent (the same as zymotic), Cancer, 4; tabes mesenterica, 7; phthisis, 19 &c. and Developmental Diseases only contributes 3.19 percent with premature births, 5, as the most common cause of death. There were 12 accidental deaths (fractures and contusions, 8 and drowning 4); 1 infanticide; 1 manslaughter (abortion); 2 suicide (by poison 1 and by drowning 1); and 2 cases in which open verdicts were returned (found drowned 1 and fall from Government building 1). Total 18. Thirteen persons from the age of 70 years and upwards died during November, vis.:-- 1 male aged 70 from stricture of the urethra; 1, aged 72 from dysentery; 1, aged 73, from obstruction of bowels (ileus); 1, aged 75, from dropsy; 1, aged 75 from morbus corbis (heart disease); 2, aged 72 and 79 from injuries accidentally received; 1 aged 79, from apoplexy; and 1, aged 84 from cystitus. 1 female, aged 73 from epilepsy, 1, aged 75 from Bright's disease; 2 aged 77 and 80, from epilepsy. 46 deaths or 24.47 percent, of the total number occurred in public institutions;-- In Burke Ward, Sydney Hospital 26 (19 male 7 female); in Phillip Ward, Benevolent Asylum, 13 (7 males 6 females) and in Fitzroy Ward, St. Vincents Hospital 6 (1 male 5 females); and Reception House, Darlinghurst, 1 (male). There were 20 children born at Benevolent Asylum (14 males 6 females) 14 of which were illegitimate; and 1 at the Sydney Jail (male). SUBURBS. -- The births of 804 children, vis., 412 males 392 females, were registered in the suburbs during the last month being 453 in excess of the deaths, and 160 above the average of the previous 5 years. The number of deaths was 351 vis.:-- 183 of males and 168 of females, being 14 above the quinquennial average. Local diseases contributed 43.95 percent. Principle cause of death,-- Inflammation of the brain 7, apoplexy, paralysis epilepsy, 3 each; convolusions 18; heart disease 14; bronchitis, 13; pneumonia, 7; dentition, 4; enteritis, 34; and Bright's disease, 5. The next in order as regards the number of its victims was the zymotic class (21.65 percent), -- measles, 10; scarlatina, 4; diphtheria, 4; typhoid, (enteric fever) 10; diarrhea, 43 &c.; The proportional of constitutional diseases was 13.96 percent, -Cancer, 12; tabos nesenterica ,9; phthisis, 21 &c. Developmental diseases, 3.42 percent. Primary causes of death, premature birth,7; old age, 4. Of the ill defined cases, 12.25 percent were of children whose death were set down to atrophy and debility. The violent deaths were, Accidents, 8 (fractures, &c., 4; and tetanus , 1; burns, 1; drowning, 1; and the effects of chloroform administered for operation, 1); infanticide, 1; suicide, 3 (by shooting, 1; by cutting throat 1; by poison, 1; ); and found drowned, 1; total 13. The number of deaths of old people was 14, vis.:--1 male aged 70, from softening of the brain; 1 , aged 75, from cystitus; 1, aged 77 from gastritis; 1, aged 78 from old age; and 1, aged 87 from pneumonia. One female aged 73 from tumor of the throat; 1 aged 74 from Bright's disease ; 1, aged 75 from dementia; 1, aged 76 etithelioma (cancer); 1, aged 79 from paralysis; 2, aged 70 and 82 from old age; 1, aged 83 from bronchitis; 1, aged 84 from enteritis. 31 deaths or 8.83 percent of the aggregate took place in public institutions:- at Leichhardt Lunatic Asylum, Callan Park 1 (male); at the Glebe Children's Hospital, 2 (males); at Camperdown: Prince Alfred Hospital, 15 (11 males 4 females); at Waterloo Little Bay Hospital 10 (8 males 2 females); at Ashfield Infants' Home 3 (2 males 1 Female); Measles still appear to be somewhat prevalent although the fatal cases have not been numerous. There were 12 deaths from this disease during the month 2 in Sydney and 10 in the suburbs with the exception on one were children under the age of 5 years. The deaths took place in the following districts: item Sydney, 1; Glebe, 1; Kogarah, 1 ; Newtown, 1; Redfern, 2; and Waterloo, 4. There was one death from typhoid fever in the city and 10 in the suburbs. As is usual on the approach of summer, a considerable increase is to be found in the numbers of deaths from diarrhea and enteritis 7 deaths of child bearing women occurred during November (4 in Sydney and 3 in the suburbs), or 1 death of a mother to every 156 births. The proportions of births registered to every 1000 of the population was 3.14, and of deaths 1.55 . The highest reading of the thermometer as registered at the Sydney Observatory was 85.1 on the 20th, and the lowest was 52.2, on the 9th and 10th; the greatest range, was 25.7 on the 25th; mean, 64.3. The prevailing direction of wind was S.E. Greatest amount of humidity was 91.0 on the 13th; least 52.3 on the 25th. Rain fell on 17 days, the amount being 5.67 inches; The average rainfall for November during the previous 10 years was 2.34; the greatest fall last month, was 1.5 inches was on the 12th Number of days lightning 2, In the metropolitan division (Sydney and Suburbs) the number of births for the month was 1089, and the deaths 539 being respectively 75 and 73 less than the registration from November 1886.
