    2. Michelle Nichols
    3. Most people are aware that next year will be the 200th anniversary of Lachlan Macquarie's governorship. Macquarie played an influential role in the development of the Hawkesbury, including the naming of the townships of Windsor, Richmond, Pitt Town, Wilberforce as well as Castlereagh on 6 December 1810. Info about community events and activities is being gathered. If anyone on the list is organising a family reunion during 2010 you may wish to register the event. For more info see www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au and click on the Macquarie picture at the bottom of the page. There is also a calendar of events. Michelle Nichols

    3. Hi Peter, Patrick Ahern c. 1827-1882 was married to Sarah LYNCH 1832-1902. Sarah was the daughter of John LYNCH c. 1790-1852 and Sarah Tunney nee PENDERGAST 1806-1873. They lived in the Wollombi area and had at least 2 children. Thomas b. 1861/14181 Wollombi & Mary Anne b. 1863/14828 Wollombi d. 19.5.1864. Thomas married Catherine Phillip or Phillby 1885/7473 and had several children. John Lynch was born in Ireland and was a convict who arrived in 1813 on the "Archduke Charles" and was employed by Thomas Pendergast. John Lynch ended up with Sarah, sister to Thomas. Sarah was also the daughter of Irish convict John Pendergast who arrived in 1800 on the "Minerva" and Jane Williams, also a convict who arrived in 1801 on the "Nile" Sarah was originally married/defacto to Patrick Tunney and had 2 children Bridget and Catherine. When Tunney died in 1824 Sarah married/defacto John Lynch and they had a large family inclduing Mary, Margaret, Saah, John, Elizabeth, Thomas, Frederick, William, Honorah, Ellen and Patrick. These families lived in the Wollombi district and are married into various other pioneering families in that area. There is more information in "Mines, Wines & People" by W. S. Parkes and the "Australian Biographical & Genealogical Record (ABGR) Series I 1788-1841" I am descended from Bridget Tunney and there are number of listers descended from the above families. 3. Good afternoon list, One of the little gems I found in the Sydney Morning Herald 13 Jan 1888 while looking for information to index into www.ryersonindex.org is this one. Serious Railway Accident at Gosford. --------------------- (By Telegraph) (From our own correspondent) ------------- GOSFORD, Thursday. An accident occurred on No. 3 contract of the Southern and Northern Junction Railway from the Hawkesbury to Gosford, yesterday, through the coupling on four trucks attached to an engine proceeding from Mullet Creek breaking, and the runaway trucks dashing into a train with workmen returning from Gosford. Five men were hurt. Their names are Dan Hisshian, who sustained a contusion of the knee and injury to the back; John Ferguson, injury to the back, Chas. Dabno, crushed foot; W Thompson, concussion of the spine and slight internal injury; Tmothy Lane, injury to the back. The men were all attended to by Dr. T Kendrick, of Gosford, and are progressing favourably. 3. Hi Listers, On 14/02/1847 at West Maitland Patrick AHERN of Wollombi married Sarah LYNCH (Ref:877 V95). They had at least 2 children. I am trying to establish whether this Sarah LYNCH was the lass who was working for Mrs. DACRE on Kennington Farm at Hexham in 1845. The lass working for Mrs. DACRE may have been the sister of my GG grandmother Mary Ann LYNCHEY and I have collected a considerable amount of information about her and her mistreatment by the system prior to her going to the DACRE farm. Mary Ann LYNCHEY accompanied her mother Sarah LYNCHEY to Australia on The Mary III arriving in Sydney in September 1835. A sister and a brother also accompanied the mother. The mother and a son had been sentenced on the Isle of Man; this son came on another vessel and was recommended for his Ticket of Leave by the Muswellbrook Bench in January 1844, nothing further has been found of him. That the sister's name may have been Sarah comes from a LYNCHEY Catholic Baptism on the Isle of Man in 1826; in 1847 this lass would have been 21. One of the documents that I have states that she had a mother (unnamed) living in Sydney. Sarah LYNCHEY was living in Sydney with Mary Ann until her death in 1860. As in Ireland, and no doubt in this case helped by the stain of convictism, the name LYNCHEY fairly quickly morphed into LYNCH. There are no LYNCHEYS in either Irish white pages today. 3. Good Morning List, Another item of interest I found in the Sydney Morning Herald of 23 March 1888 while extracting information to index into www.ryersonindex.org Fire on Dangar Island. --------------- (By Telegraph.) (From our own correspondent) ----- PEAT'S FERRY, Thursday. A fire broke out between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning, on Dangar Island, in a weatherboard building belonging to Messrs. Ryland and Morse, sub-contractors for the superstructure of the Hawkesbury bridge. The building was used as a store-room, and contained a large quantity of inflammable material; there were about 12 tins of kerosene in it, and a great quantity of turpentine and various other oils and paints, and a quantity of carpenter's tools, blocks, tackle, ropes, &c. the building was burned to the ground in a couple of hours, the damage is estimated at about One Thousand Pounds. The fire while it lasted completely illuminated the whole islandl it looked beautiful from the river. One man, who was sleeping ina building at the time, it is alleged, had a very narrow escape from being burned to death. The cause of the fire is not yet known. It is said to be insured, but the amount is not stated. Sincerely, Bill E-mail message checked by Internet Security (6.0.0.386) Database version: 5.13350 http://www.pctools.com/en/internet-security/

    3. Good Morning List, As I extract information from the Sydney Morning Herald for www.ryersonindex.org I have found other items of interest I think worth sharing, and this is one from the 13 July, 1888. THE HAWKESBURY BRIDGE. -------- TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. Sir, - The concourse of people who went to witness the erection of the second span on the pillars of the new bridge at Peat's Ferry, Hawkesbury River, to-day, will not easily forget the magnificent sight of placing that gigantic mass of engineering skill in its allotted place. This bridge will certainly change the appearance of the Hawkesbury at Long island, where there is but very little improvement since the introduction of the iron horse, save the construction of a road from the railway gates, passing the public school, police station, and the new premises in course of erection by Mr. J Murphy, of Kent and Liverpool streets, Sydney. The refereshments at the terminus upon the steamer General Gordon were inferior, the attendance below the ordinary standard, and the prices infamous. Surely something better can be done here to meet the requirements of passengers, travellers, visitors and tourists. I am, &c., July 12 A VISITOR. 1. Re: [HHHV] MUSWELLBROOK PUBLIC SCHOOL HISTORY
    2. Phil Young
    3. Tracie, I helped organize a photographic display for Glebe Public School's 150th anniversary last year, so I'll let you know what we did to prepare for that. First stop was the State Records Office at Kingswood. I searched on their website at www.records.nsw.gov.au and got the reference for the files for the school, submitted a Pre-Order the day before my visit so that I didn't waste the first hour or so of my visit waiting for the files to be obtained, and then I started work. I took my laptop and scanner, and they are very happy for you to scan any document or photo that is in the school's file. I was fortunate that our school files contained around 100 photos, some that were extremely old and some that were only decades old. Just as important were all the administrative papers for the school going back to the 19th century, and some of these documents were very valuable to us in preparing a history of the school. So, for us, it was a visit that was well worthwhile. However, any visit to Kingswood needs to be well planned, given its distance for most people, plus the fact that it's so remote from anything in the local area (eg. Take your lunch with you). Additionally, the school helped publicise the event well in advance, seeking contributions of photos, and a good number of ex-students contributed class photos. 3. Am resending the "COBCROFT MURDER" article. Apologies for my last few posts which had inserted styles and gobbledy goop. Obviously a recent issue with Hotmail and Firefox so I have swapped browsers. The article was about the death of Henry Cobcroft at Wilberforce in 1901. His wife Margaret was charged with the murder however the jury returned a not guilty verdict and the case was dismissed. THE WILBERFORCE TRAGEDY. "An inquest was held to-day on the bcdy of William Cobcroft, the victim at the Wilberforce tragedy. From the evidence of one witness it appeared that Cobcroft and his wife were having an altercation in ithe kitchen, when the wife suddenüy seized a carving knife and stabbed Cobcroft in the back. The wife, who was in custody, deposed that she and her husband were struggling, he with a knife in his hand. She wrested the knife from him, and in her endeavor to keep him off the blade entered his back, she knew not by what means. A verdict was returned to the effect that deceased died from hemorrage, caused by a knife wound in the back, which knife was in the hand of Margaret Cobcroft. The jury strongly recommended her to mercy on account of the great provocation she received. She was committed for trial. From the evidence adduced it was elicited that deceased and his wife were continually quarrelling." Source: The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA) Wednesday 6 March 1901 p. 5
