Hello Listers. I am forwarding this from the NSW Colonial History List, which contains the original posting, and my response to it on that list. Hopefully some of the content will be of interest to members of this list; more especially as the Hawkesbury & Hills districts have such very close connections with Governor Macquarie. Happy 2010. The men gave three cheers. Colonel Paterson and Lt. Colonel Foveaux were at the Pier Head with the 102nd Regiment, attended by the chaplain and the gentlemen of the settlement. The 73rd Regiment and the ruddy ancients of the New South Wales Corps under arms, formed a guard all the way to the adjacent newly painted Government House. Inhabitants bowed as the party passed. The following deaths were reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday 4 December 1865 p. 2. The two deaths were children and the cause of death was drowning. "A magisterial inquiry was held yesterday (Thursday), at the residence of the deceased's parents, before Mr. James Ascough, on the body of a young lad, ten years old, son of Robert Smith, of Windsor, tanner, who, it appeared, had been accidentally drowned on Wednesday evening last, whilst bathing. The following evidence was adduced at the inquiry:- William Frederick Busby, a boy about nine years old, being duly sworn, deposed: Yesterday evening the deceased, Francis Smith, and myself were bathing in the South Creek, near Windsor. I saw the deceased sink almost immediately after he went into the water; he could not swim; he came up three times and then sank; after I had seen him sink the third time, I ran for assistance. John Moore deposed, in consequence of a report that a boy had been drowned in the South Creek, I hastened to the spot and saw a naked body lying in the weeds; I immediately undressed, went into the water and brought the body to the land; I recognised the bod! y as that of Francis Smith; he was quite dead when I brought him ashore. Dr. Day deposed that, he had visited the deceased just after he had been taken out of the water, and used the ordinary means to promote respiration, but without effect; he had no doubt that death resulted from asphyxia by drowning." The young boy was Francis Smith, and was the son of Robert Smith and Christiana Smith. The second drowning was of William Brett, the infant son of Thomas and Sarah. He is buried in an unmarked garve at Wilberforce. The article states: "We have just been informed of another case of drowning which occurred this morning, at Wilberforce. The unfortunate in this instance being an infant eighteen months old, son of Thomas and Sarah Brett, of Wilberforce. From the information received, it appears that the child, unperceived, had crawled or fallen into a duck-pond on the premises, only a few yards from the house. The'water was very thick and muddy, and, no doubt, quickly suffocated thechild, who was discovered by his mother, who had seen him only a few minutes previously playing in the yard. A coroner's inquiry will be held on the body."

In the Windsor Presbyterian cemetery stands a headstone for John Thomas NEILSON who died in 1877 apparently the son of John and Mary Neilson. Whilst browsing for some information in a local newspaper, I came across some interesting information which may be of interest to descendants of this family and the HHHV list. According to the Hawkesbury Chronicle dated 9 September 1882, John Thomas Neilson was re-interred at the Windsor Presbyterian cemetery. He had apparently died on the 23 December 1877 at Mr Maguire's Bearbong Station at Dubbo after a short illness lasting 5 weeks. His death is registered on the NSW BDM index no. 4818/1877 and registered at Coomabarabran. According to the article, John Thomas Neilson was a chemist and expert in medicine. It also seems he was lawyer and was very knowledgeable on land laws. His elderly mother wanted her son's body moved to Windsor (his boyhood home) hence the e-interment. Rev. P. Fitizgerald a family friend conducted a service at the grave for selected family and a few personal friends. His remains were in a cedar coffin with a plate attached, which stated "John Thomas Neilson, died 23rd December 1877, aged 49" His headstone states he was 42 years. The transcription on his headstone reads: "In Remembrance of JOHN THOMAS NEILSON, DIED 23RD DECEMBER 1877, AGED 42 YEARS" Other family members buried with him : "Also In Loving Memory Of MARY NEILSON, WIFE OF JOHN NEILSON M.D. WHO DIED 20TH OCTOBER 1899 IN HER 83RD YEAR. Also ALEXANDER BRODIE NEILSON WHO DIED 30TH DECEMBER 1892, AGED 52 YEARS" For images see Hawkesbury on the Net Cemetery Register http://www.hawkesbury.net.au/cemetery/windsor_presbyterian/wwpc101.html Cheers Michelle nichols
In the Hawkesbury Chronicle dated 18 Feb 1888 p. 6, Mr F. J. MORTLEY Mayor of Windsor Council, published a letter calling a public meeting. The public meeting was to be held at the Windsor School of Arts to arrange a Testimonal for Peter KEMP junior to honour his victory as Champion Sculler of the World. The letter was also signed by: B.
