I am researching BORTHWICKs - my own family, descended from William Murray BORTHWICK & Helen PATERSON of the Hunter and Inverell, their ancestors and relatives, as well as a worlwide Borthwick One Name Study. For researchers everywhere I am posting on my website all the data I am able to collect regarding Borthwicks around the world. If any lister has bits and pieces of Borthwick data amongst their records it would be gratefully received for these pages. I have a great deal of basic data now so am especially interested in unusual references from around the world - directories, references in books and local or family histories, indexes, etc. To see what I've already posted you can visit the Borthwick web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~anncarson/ Best wishes Ann Carson annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Researching in the New England: BORTHWICK,, BLOODSWORTH, COUSENS, DAISEY, FARQUHARSON, FENWICKE, FLETCHER, GILL, JOHNSTON, LAYCOCK, POTTS, TURTON, VYNER, YORK, and more ...

    3. Hi Glynis, A couple of extracts re The Falls : "Above the settlement at Wallis Plains and the limit of shallow-draught navigation, the first of many gravel bars in the river formed a shallow crossing for communication between Wallis Plains and Patersons Plains. This crossing was called The Falls and the place retained the name for generations after it was no longer needed as a ford." [Dawn in the Valley : W. Allan Wood] "The tidal limit at the time of European settlement was just west of the Belmore Bridge at a location called the Falls. The Falls was a sandbar where wagons could cross the (Hunter) river and it coincided with the top of the tidal limit. It was here that teamsters and settlers of Bolwarra and the Paterson Valley had to cross to travel to their estates. The crossing was unuseable if a "fresh" was flowing in the river. The Falls remained an important crossing until the construction of the first Belmore Bridge in 1869, which linked Lorn directly with West Maitland." [Maitland on the Hunter : Walsh and Archer] There was a 'minor' flood on the Hunter in 1855, so more than likely The Falls crossing place was washed out and needed some repairs. 3. Valerie, I have not gone down the line of Ballantyne yet, but Mary Smith, what are her parents details. Not another connection to the Hall family is she? If so there are a number of us who would be able to help you. The T Raisbeck stands for Thomas. My gg grandmother Bridget Sweeney/Freel married William Raisbeck, son of Thomas Raisbeck and Elizabeth Bowen. I think it was William's brother Thomas who married Agnes Ballantyne. Bridget's marriage to William Raisbeck was her second. I am descendant from her first husband James Freel. Looking forward to hearing from you. 3. Phillip, Your reply is very exciting. Yes the family is Thomas Raisbeck and Elizabeth Bowen, and I have noted Harold Raisbeck and Agnes Ballentine. I would love to get a copy of the Raisbeck family research. I also have copy of a subdivision map of the "Farmborough". which was subdivided by William Bowen in 1839, part of 3 grants received from 1835, and would copy same with family group sheets known if interested. All information is kept in arch files, as I have not mastered the family tree software yet, so will need a snail mail address to send the information. When William Bowen died, Thomas Raisbeck and Elizabeth Bowen inherited the land, as Elizabeth's brother died young and unmarried. The land was sold to Dominick Gillespie - g uncle of Bridget Sweeney/Freel/Raisbeck, Michael Healy husband to Bridget Gillespie - 2nd cousin to Bridget, John Sweeney - brother to Bridget Sweeney, Bryan Egan, husband to Ann Gillespie - 2nd cousin to Bridget Sweeney and much more. Most purchases are connected to the family. I also am in contact with Alan Raisbeck from Macarthur, and will copy him in this email, together with my cousins, who have been working with me over the past 20 or so years.. Looking forward to hearing from you again.
