    1. [H,H,HV] Assignment to Robert JENKINS
    2. Russell Orchard
    3. Hi all, An extract from "St Peters Richmond Early People & Burials to 1855" in regard to my convict, John Ablett, states that the "Sydney Gazette of 11 June, 1814, reported that he [John Ablett] had absconded from his Master, Robert Jenkins." The extract also states that John Ablett had been sent to the Windsor District as an assigned servant. I had assumed that this was his first assignment after arriving on the Earl Spencer in Oct 1813. I have found a little on a Robert Jenkins, a Sydney based merchant, but this does not seem to fit with an assignment in the Windsor area. John Ablett was then subsequently assigned to William Cox at Windsor, assumably following his recapture. Does anyone know of a Robert Jenkins who had interests in the Windsor area around 1814? Please excuse the post to 2 lists. Regards, Russell Orchard

    1. [H,H,HV] WALMSLEY & Wiseman's Ferry Inn.
    2. Gwen Dundon
    3. Hello Terri, Did you know that there is to be another Wamsley/Walmsley reunion next year? It is to be held at Wingham near Taree NSW on April 19-20, 2003. I was told of this in a letter from C.S. Wamsley ("Curly") of Wingham a few months ago (I am not a descendant however). As you would know, the Edward Walmsley who came to Australia in "Susan" in 1839, died in 1885 (said to be 103), his wife Sarah having predeceased him in January 1868 (described as his second wife in the Sydney Morning Herald of 10.1.1868, page 2 in a short obituary). Both were buried at Blue Gum Flat where numerous members of their family lived. Their graves are in Lisarow Cemetery. Edward Sr is shown in the Publicans Licences as keeping "The Travellers Inn" at Wisemans Ferry in 1853-54 at least. That is interesting in light of the fact that his son Edward Jr later built a pub called "The Travellers Rest" at Blue Gum Flat, and initially it was kept by one of his sons. This was a very well known hostelry on the Pacific Highway site of the present Tall Timbers Hotel at Ourimbah. Edward Wamsley (brother of James) was known as The King of Blue Gum Flat. In the defunct newspaper, The Gosford Times, issue of 6.3.1930, Wisemans Ferry Notes, it reads: "The old building which was the home of the late Mrs James Walmsley for so many years at Wiseman's Ferry is now demolished and a new one is being erected. The old house was said by old hands to have been built soon after the 1867 flood." There is an obituary for James Walmsley who died at a ripe old age in 1905, and for his grandson James Walmsley who died in an accident three days before his grandparent's death. See The Gosford Times for Friday, 17.2.1905 "Dora Creek - Death of Mr Jas. Wamsley and Grandson". James Sr had moved to the Dora Creek-Cooranbong district from Wiseman's Ferry [quote]. The State Library of NSW has microfilmed records of The Gosford Times. If you send me your address Terri, I will post you a stat of the James Walmsley obituary. Best wishes, Gwen Dundon

    3. Good Morning, I am a new subscriber and I'm seeking any information on the Wiseman's Ferry Inn and in particular James WALMSLEY who ran the Inn at one time (date unknown at this stage). James WALMSLEY was born in 1818 in Ireland and arrived in NSW with his parents Edward WALMSLEY and Sarah nee WALKER in 1839. James WALMSLEY married Jane Eleanor PHILLIPS in 1846 at Wyong. Jane was born in 1829 at Wilberforce, the daughter of Thomas PHILLIPS and Margaret nee FLEMING. Issue: Margaret b. 1847 Wiseman's Ferry. James b. 1849 Wiseman's Ferry. Edward William Phillip b. 1851 Wiseman's Ferry. Sarah Jane b. 1854 Pitt Town; d. 1854 Wilberforce Mary Isabella b. 1858; married Roberts SANDERS 1873. 3. People, I have a photo of Duckefield Park if anyone is interested. ----- Original Message ----- From: Diane <dianep@optushome.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 7:35 PM Subject: [H,H,HV] John EALES - Duckenfield [Part 2] "Fortunes Earned and Fortunes Lost" .... continued Duckenfield Park House was built on the estate from the proceeds of many years toil and good fortune and management. The mansion contained 45 rooms and was constructed of quality Pyr-mont sandstone, shipped to the private wharf on the property. It was the quality of the stone which would finally bring the building to its end. Cedar for the joinery was cut from the properties own stands of timber and also was used to make much of the fine furniture which subsequently graced the residence. The home became a showplace on the Hunter and entertained many important guests including several Governors. Not only was the house palatial but it overlooked statue lined terraces and fountains in grounds which were equally extensive, including conservatory, bush houses, hot houses and rockeries. The two hot houses were 40 ft by 18 ft each and contained many rare plants and the bush house was said to represent an English palm-house conservatory, with walks meandering in and about many splendid specimens of palms, fern baskets, trees laden with native orchids and staghorns. The gardens were under the management of the gardener, Mr. LEOPOLD. John EALES Snr. did not see his mansion completed, this being undertaken by his son, who enlarged the home, adding a ballroom with sprung floor, large enough to accomodate 150 couples. The home was equipped with electric light, powered by its own generator, a hot water system and a septic sewerage system, all unheard of luxuries in the mid 1800's. John EALES Jnr. died in 1894, the holdings being divided amongst his five sons. The properties were sold off during this time, with the Duckenfield property itself finally divided up into 20 farms in 1917. Duckenfield House was dismantled and the stone from the old home bought by BHP who shipped it down the river to Newcastle, erecting with it a pattern store at the steel works and three cottages in Mayfield. One wing remained until 1975, when it was dismantled and the sand stone proposed for use in a house in Raymond Terrace, the fourth to be built from the stone and the fifth building. John EALES was obviously a strong willed and ambitious man who would not back down from an altercation if he believed he would prosper from the incident. It is said that around the late 1850's, early 1860's, EALES quarreled violently with his bank manager at the Bank of Australasia in Maitland. EALES refused to close his account in the normal way by drawing a cheque and demanded payment in gold, thereby embarrassing his old bank as it was not able to hand over the required sum of £100,000 immediately. The humiliated bank asked asked for time to pay while the bullion was shipped from Sydney. Several days passed before he was advised the money was available. Taking a dozen employees as guards and porters, EALES drove his bullock wagon to the main door of the bank and to the amazement of the onlookers, personally supervised the checking of the money bags onto the wagon and to the cheers of the wondering crowd, proceeded to drive his bullocks to the Bank of New South Wales branch, 100 yards down the street and opened a new account, the cash deposit being the largest on record at that time from a private individual. [Maitland Tourism : July 1997] Gee ... I would have liked <grin> to have seen that !!
