    3. Hello All, I have family who owned land in Ellalong about 1860-1870. My ggrandfather Alexander McARTHUR is shown on the Parish map as owning a lot in Ellalong. The next lot was owned by Annie Kennedy who I presume was his cousin. Alexander and his uncle Alexander KENNEDY also had dealings with other parcels in the village. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with an interest in these families or who can direct me to any info about Ellalong of that time. 1. [H,H,HV] Place Names : East Maitland
    2. Diane
    3. Place Name : East Maitland Some extracts from this morning's Daily Telegraph (Sydney), Friday July 26, 2002 : "Like voices from the grave, an historic Hunter Valley pioneer cemetery is coming back to life with the aid of modern technology. The Glebe Cemetery at East Maitand is one of the oldest in Australia and is the final resting place of more than 200 of the country's convict, pioneers and settlers ..... " " The Glebe Cemetery website, a joint project between Maitland City Council and students from the University of New England, is part of a conservation program for the graveyard. So far $45,000 has been spent on an archaeological survey of the site and restoration of 17 monuments and headstones. More work is expected to follow". "James TRIMBY (1792-1828) was the first person buried there. Burials continued on the site for at least 70 years. James TRIMBY's father, Joseph TRIMBY (1747-1836) was a convict member of the First Fleet (1788) ship 'Friendship' and is buried in the same grave as his son". "Another Hunter Valley pioneer buried at the cemetery is Police Magistrate Edward Denny DAY ... he also tracked down Teddy "The Jewboy" DAVIS and his gang of bushrangers. DAY died aged 60 and was buried in 1876". "Unmarked grave number 224 is believed to belong to Australia's first colonial architect Francis GREENWAY .... " "The weatherbeaten headstones that dot the Glebe cemetery offer a glimpse of just how difficult life was in Australia's early years. Some examples : * Henry George ADAMS, 12, drowned 14th Dec. 1878 at Lake Macquarie, son of Henry John and Mary ADAMS * Jane CANNON, 50, died 20th Oct. 1852, killed by falling off a dray * Barbara EVANS, 23, died 8th Dec. 1833, left husband and 2 children * George LYNDOP, 34, Private 80th Rgt., died 6th June, 1841, by bursting gun * Margaret Ann JACKSON, 37, died 22nd Jan. 1852, accidently killed by a dray in Maitland * William MINOR, 50, died 3rd Sept. 1885, fell from jail wall at work " "While the cemetery's historical significance was never in doubt, it was neglected until a couple of years ago when Maitland City Council began a restoration program .... " The complete article (with photos) can be read on page 19, and the website address for the Glebe Cemetery project is : http://www-personal.une.edu.au/~pgrave/StPeters/index.htm Like they say ... better late, than never :) Regards, Diane

    3. Place Name : East Maitland ... where one of my forebears came to grief ! James LAW, my second great-grandfather Native of Kesh, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland Father : James LAW (soldier) Mother : Unknown Born abt. 1820 Sailed from Plymouth on board the barque 'Theresa' in January 1842 Accompanied by his wife, Mary (nee McDONAGH) Arrived in Sydney 25th August, 1842 Calling : Farm Labourer Made their way to the Hunter Valley, where four children were born - Deborah (1844), Thomas (1846), Mary Jane (1848) and Emily (1850). One of the first families on the Millers Forest estate, 1854. >From the Maitland Mercury : October, 1860 Fatal Accident : - "An Inquest was held at the Freemasons Arms, East Maitland, yesterday, by Mr. THOMSON, on the body of James LAW, who was accidently killed by a fall from his horse on Thursday afternoon. >From the evidence it appeared that the deceased, who resided at Miller's Forest, was leaving Mr. McCUE's public house, East Maitland, about five o'clock in the afternoon. In company with his brother-in-law and Hugh McPHERSON, for the purposes of returning home, the deceased, who was said to be a very bad rider and seldom on horseback, had only taken a little brandy and ginger beer, and appeared sober, though excited; the deceased and his companions proceeded homewards, and rode across the George Street railway crossing, deceased taking the lead; he then started out at a gallop towards the station master's house, fell from his horse and his head came in contact with a stump, killing him on the spot. Dr. WILTON was at once sent for, but found deceased quite dead, he gave it as his opinion that death had resulted from fracture of the skull. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. The deceased leaves a wife and four children, and was, we are informed, a very sober, steady man. He had come to Maitland that day for the purpose of abandoning an action that he had commenced against a neighbour for illegal encroachment on his land". His Death Certificate states his cause of death to be : "accidental death by a fall from a horse whilst in a state of partial intoxication" .... must have been the ginger beer :) James is buried in an unmarked grave at Raymond Terrace Pioneers. 3. Dear Louise, Have you looked for a Deceased Estate file at State Records, KINGSWOOD? You may be lucky and find a copy of a will attached, and how the estate was distributed. State Records is always worth a day out. Maybe two days from where you are. Take lunch as the nearest shops are a fair way away. New extended modernised Reading Room is great.
