Dear Lesley, Just thought I'd check re the John Hennessy. I have a few of them in my lines.... Do you have any more details about him (ie parents or when he arrived etc. ) I have a large family of Hennessys coming from Dundrum in 1850. Parents John & Honora - both deceased in Ireland prior to 1850. In the first generation there is no sign of a John but the name reappears all along in the second generation. I wonder if your John belongs to mine????? Cheers Lorraine
Eric Cupitt has done an immense amount of research on the Cupitt family and has written several books. He maybe able to assist with your Neich connection or put you in contact with someone else researching the family. I will send his address off line, he does not have an email address that I am aware of. _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
Thank you for this info Diane. I appreciate your taking time to reply. Is Mary Grace (Dobbs) listed in the HVD? Does Death in the Hunter give a number or reference to the inquest of Anthony Dobbs? Can you tell me how to go about finding a copy of the inquest? Hi Marie, According to the Hunter Valley Directory : 1841 there was a John Anthony DOBBS who received a Ticket of Leave for the Maitland District in August, 1840. He arrived on the 'John 1' (4), 1832. Also, according to Death in the Hunter, an Inquest was held for an Anthony DOBBS, aged 33, in February, 1843, at Maitland. There are three John Brennans listed in the HVD - only one listed as a convict at the time - John BRENNAN, Convict, assigned to Andrew LANG, Paterson (Sept. 1840) who arrived per 'Andromeda 11' (1) in 1830. Some info about the LANG family and Dunmore House can be found at http://www.nationaltrust.com.au/dunmore.asp Their convict Indents, Ticket of Leave Butts and/or Permission to Marry may provide some further info. I think that there are some GRONO descendants on this list, so they may get in touch; or you could try the AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS mailing list, if you haven't already; there are some details on the GRONO family at http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/page105.html and from memory there was a recent reunion and book published. So, a few references you could follow up on. Place name: Dunmore. Looking for convict Anthony or John Anthony Dobbs who married Mary Grace. (also a convict).I've heard that he worked at Dunmore. How do I prove this? He arrived in 1832 I think and died in 1843 apparently having been struck by lightning. His daughter Susan was born the same year. Mary then married to a John Brennan, I believe also a convict - perhaps in the same area? Susan was now known as Susan Brennan. Later her mother is found living with Thomas Grono at Windsor although no marriage record has been found, she calls herself Mary Grono and her daughter was married as Susan Grono. Anyone researching these people? Marie in Sydney.
Dear Sally, I live in the area at PORTLAND, but have no real family interests here. As far as I know there is not a list for this area, although one was rumoured. There is a family history group at Lithgow, of which I am not a member as yet. Russell, Margaret launched her book last year at the Popular Hall, Millers Forest Centenary of Federation celebrations. It was a great day :) You may still be able to purchase one from her, if she has any left (I'll send you her contact details off-line). Unfortunately it has no ISBN number. Another one I can recommend is : Raymond Terrace and District : History and Heritage by Cynthia Hunter ISBN 0 9586819 0 2 Published by the Raymond Terrace Historical Society In 1854, the 2,000 acres opposite Raymond Terrace, formally the grant of Vicars JACOB, and under cultivation by tenant farmers, was subdivided into forty farms and put up for auction. One of my lot purchased Lot 10, around 70 acres. The property, known as "Riverview", fronts the Hunter River, although these days it's a little better protected due to the levee banks. The park, near the Junction Inn, is a great place to just sit and look out over the river and the flats and wonder what it must have been like. Certainly, a forest no more .... Hi Diane, The truth is, I don't know. I do not have them recorded at present, but I do have some loose ends to tidy up. Michael and Patrick are very prominent names in the family, but then they are in many Irish Catholic families. But there are also children Thomas and Mary from BDM which are not common to our family. By the early 1860's the Cunningham family had moved to the Gulgong area en masse. Sarah Peters was to die there in 1862. Marriage - 2767/1861 CUNNINGHAM PATRICK MARKHAM BRIDGET RAYMOND TERRACE Birth - 12961/1862 CUNNINGHAM MICHAEL PATRICK BRIDGET RAYMOND TERRACE Birth - 14170/1864 CUNNINGHAM THOMAS PATRICK BRIDGET RAYMOND TERRACE Birth - 14211/1866 CUNNINGHAM MARY PATRICK BRIDGET RAYMOND TERRACE Adding to the problem is that there was at least one other Cunningham family in the Hunter region who I keep tripping over. My thinking says that they are not ours, but will save your email, just in case. Even so, the book sounds interesting. I wonder if it is available, at least from a library as I would be interested in some background on Millers Forest in which to place my family at the time. I drove through there on my way home from hols once. I could see why flooding might have been a serious problem with the low flats next to the river. Place Name : Gresford Patrick FLYNN, my 3rd g-grandfather I know little about Patrick at this stage, other than some scant details from his marriage entry. In August 1840, he was a batchelor, parish of Gresford, who married at Oakville (parish), Whittingham (circuit), Wollombi (district) Caroline STONE, spinster. Witnesses were Thomas BAYLEY (or BAGLEY) and Johanna MASON, both of Paterson. Five children : William (1842), John (1843), Maria (1845), Clara (1847) and Caroline (1849). On daughter Clara's baptism entry, his place of abode is shown as Narrowgut. No Quality or Profession listed. Am currently waiting on some certificates which may, or may not, shed further light on this couple. Regards, Diane
Evening Russell, Are there any family connections to a Michael CUNNINGHAM (Jnr.) 1862-1932 ? (son of Patrick and Bridget ?) There are some references to this family in Margaret Osborn's book, "A Forest No More", which I think is a great title, A Short History of Millers Forest [including Duckenfield]. Following the devastating 1893 flood, then the drought of 1895, my paternal g-grandfather must have decided to call it quits and moved on to greener, and drier, pastures. He had his final clearing out sale in 1899 - lock, stock and household sundries. I have browsed your archives and seen previous references to above. I am a descendant of Emanuel Neich and am compiling a tree and family history book. Need to inform descendants and gain as much info as possible. Our weak link is the Pittown chain, as we are unable to establish the parentage of John and Alexander Neich buried at Pittown. Births would be abt 1860 and 1867 resp. We believe their parents are Emanuel Neich and Mary Cupitt. I dont know if this is the Mary Cupitt who married an Emmett and if he was dead at this stage. I did see a death of a John Emmett which would fit. Was Mary a worker at an inn or similar where Emanuel may have stayed en-route to his property at Berrima? His family owned Roberton Park and Comerton Park at Berrima. I am not sure of the geography but someone told me that in the old days they would have had to go via Pittown to get to Berrima. Emanuel lived in Burwood, so would you locals please advise whether this route is correct? I found a Cupitt tree on the net, but with no address for the submitter which was unfortunate. Does anyone have a full tree of John and Alexander's descendants. They both married Clarke sisters. Thanks and kind regards Lina Molong
