(Diane has successfully extracted me from a corner with her encouragement re places in the Hills District!) My BROWN family lived for many years in the home named "Brislington" on the corner of George and Marsden Sts Parramatta. I'd love to hear from anyone who has connections to the home or to the family who were Drs in Parramatta for over 90 years. One family I'd particularly like to contact is the SPIERS family. Mr Sam Spiers was coachman, gardener and much respected helper of the family for many decades. I have some pages on my website for the BROWNS and their ancestors in Brislington Somerset if any reader is interested. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~anncarson/Brown/bro wnfrontpage.htm Regards Ann Carson annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au BORTHWICK Worldwide One Name Study (GoONS 3727)

Hi Everyone! Further to my query re James Cribb (Atlas 3 - 1815) and Jane Hewitt, I am aware, that after James Cribb died (1841), she is buried as Jane French in the Cribb Vault at Richmond. On checking the Col Sec index- there are 2 John French listed: John French - 73rd Regiment & John French - per Eliza 1815. On checking the 1841 Census, both John French are still alive and kicking with one living in Colo and the other in Black Wattle Swamp. Would anyone have info as to which John French caught Jane's eye?? and if, they were married? Thanks for any help! Liz Hulin

Hi Russell, If you don't have any luck with a newspaper look-up, the State Library (Sydney) has the MM on microfilm, so if you ever get down there ... According to W.A. Wood, Dawn in the Valley - "Major Morisett certified on 28 July, 1822, that Lieut. Close took possession of his land by permission of Gov. Macquarie and commenced building his house at a very heavy expense in the belief that the lagoon would be the boundary at the back and the remainder of the grant would extend along the river. Gov. Brisbane's regulation restricting the river frontage of each grant to one mile not only forced Close to take the lagoon and swamp at the rear but the poor land beyond it .... " Perhaps this part of his grant was known locally as Close's Swamp ? "Brisbane overcame these difficulties by increasing Close's grant to 2,300 acres in two portions, which exceeded the regulated river frontage, and put him in possession of the whole of the land suitable for a town at the head of deep-water river navigation ... " Morpeth ! After realising Brisbane should not have alienated the high ground to a private holder, Gov. Darling tried to resume some of it back ! There was a lot a haggling - Close wanted to be compensated for all the work and money he had spent in clearing the land but Darling wouldn't meet the price Close was asking. I'm not sure whether they did eventually settle on a price, but in the end Close did free that part of his land that forms present-day Morpeth, which at the time was becoming an important river port. The greater part of Close's grants remained in the family for nearly a century, before being auctioned around 1920. (Ref: The Morpeth Story) There were a few cemeteries in the area in operation at the time - Morpeth, Campbell's Hill (formerly West Maitland), St. Peters Old Burial Ground (East Maitland); and Hiland Crescent. I had a quick look in the Maitland City Council Burial Records CD, but no listing. Also, there are two Inquest listings in Death in the Hunter - BUT - the dates are a little out - Anne Kelly, 42, held at East Maitland, 26th August, 1856 and Mary Ann Kelly, 46, held at East Maitland, 2nd September, 1856. They usually held the inquests fairly quickly ? so probably not. Hi Jane and John, I don't know that much about Ellalong other than it has been Aellalong on earlier maps and that it is in the vicinity of Millfield, Launa and Wollombi, all farming communities. There are a few well known families in the general region - families that I am connected to in the area are John Thomas Baker(line of William Baker Neptune 1790) and his wife Jane Lousie Ware (also from Wollombi), Sarah Robinson who married Joseph Craft, Sarah Dixon (buried at Ellalong) d/o James Peulett (Scarborough 1788), Thomas William Collyer apparently had a pub in Wollombi. I have recently driven through the area and it is very pretty. You may find more information from the Museum at Wollombi or from the Cessnock Family Circle (online) Cheers, Beverle ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Tainsh" <jjtainsh@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 26, 2002 1:35 PM Subject: [H,H,HV] Ellalong > Hello All, > I have family who owned land in Ellalong about 1860-1870. > My ggrandfather Alexander McARTHUR is shown on the Parish map as owning a lot in Ellalong. Hi all, My ggg grand aunt, Ann Kelly nee Cunningham died at Close's Swamp on 25 Jul 1856. Cause of death is shown as "Died by drowning(DT's)" which doesn't herald well for our Ann. This was probably reported in the newspaper of the time, but I note the online Maitland Mercury is only available to 1855. Can anybody help with a newspaper lookup? My understanding is that it is in the Maitland/Morpeth area and I assume named after Edward Charles Close, founder of Morpeth (refer http://www.huntervalleygenealogy.com/close.htm ). Ann was Catholic. I suppose there are many Catholic cemeteries in that area that she may have been buried in. Any suggestions? Regards, Russell Orchard

Hi Marie, No listing for Mary, but keep in mind that the HVD only covers the period 1840-42, and her name may not have appeared in the primary sources that were used to compile the directory. As for the Inquest - the number was 2088 - dated 26th Feb. 1843 [from Death in the Hunter, Inquests in the Maitland area, 1834-1942, by Maitland Family History Circle]. There is no reference to a newspaper article, so that probably means the details were taken from the A.O. (State Records) Registers of Coroners' Inquests and Magisterial Inquiries microfilm, and that they did not find a newspaper report - but that's not to say there wasn't one, and you always have a trawl through the on-line Maitland Mercury http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/browselist.html just to double check ! I don't think that inquest papers have survived for that period and you'll probably find that the register itself is the only record - containing a one line listing, with the number, place, date, name and cause of death (such as accidently killed or whatever). Very few details.
