    1. [H,H,HV] Place Names - Parramatta
    2. June Reeks
    3. Hi Everyone I have Patrick Hanratty in Parramatta. A convict who arrived on "Atlas" 1 in 1802. In 1811 he married Sarah Wilson - she vanishes, he remarries in 1821 Sarah Primer, convict of "Lord Melville" 1817. In 1809 a notice appeared in the Sydney Gazette which stated he was in possession of the Farm of Mr. Holt at the Northern Bounday. Can anyone give me any ideas where this would be.?? Regards and TIA June

    1. [H,H,HV] "Place Names" : N-O-P-Q-R-S
    2. Diane
    3. Morning all, Placename : Paterson Name : Caroline STONE, my 3rd g-grandmother Known to be living/working at "Elms Hall" (a property on the Gresford Road), Paterson in 1840 when she married my 3rd g-grandfather, Patrick FLYNN. She may have been a domestic servant ? I have traced her from 1840 onwards, but nothing earlier. As an aside the following article on the BUCKNELL's of "Elms Hall", written by Harry Boyle (The Way We Were) may be of interest ... Reluctant Wife of a Pioneer Paterson Farmer : "It is an accepted theory that our pioneer women followed their men into the wilderness to face whatever tribulations and danger that would confront them. While this is so in most cases there were exceptions. One such case was Martha BUCKNELL whose husband William when granted "Elms Hall" on the Paterson River had a hard task convincing Martha to come with him. Still existing is the promissory note given by him to her to persuade her to accompany him. Dated June 23, 1827, it states : "I William BUCKNELL, give Martha this promissory note that if she does not like the Hunter River I will allow her to return to England with five children and pay her expenses to Ireland". William BUCKNELL was a watchmaker, Martha was a neice of Darcy WENTWORTH and cousin of William Charles WENTWORTH. They arrived in Sydney in 1826 on the ship "Adrian". Reading his letters it is obvious that William had a hard time of it, running an outpost estate, having trouble with bullocks and horses and being injured, but being instructed what to do by Martha who evidently was a strong minded woman. They had married in Armagh Ireland and had 11 children. One son had died before leaving England, one was born at sea, and one in the Colony. The Colonial Office had given him support to assist in the Colony's water supply. He had brought out Saxon Merinos but all were lost on the voyage. Gov. Darling disliked William C. WENTWORTH and presumably his relatives and made some caustic remarks about the BUCKNELL's. William called his estate "Elms Hall" after the WENTWORTH's estate in Ireland and despite many setbacks prospered. In 1838 he opened a store on "Elms Hall" and later advertised that he would no longer sell wine and spirits there because it caused local troubles. In 1849 he pioneered cotton growing sending a bale to England. His sons became pioneer graziers and helped open up the interior. For a woman who was reluctant to come to the Hunter River she left her mark in local history. William died in 1856, Martha lived on till 1871. A local story about a descendant of the BUCKNELL's (the next few words are obliterated) tric (possibly eccentric ?), lived near Hilldale and his home was on the right-of-way for the proposed North Coast railway line. He was afraid of ghosts and always had to be home before dark. If in town and held up he would stay in town rather than be caught in the dark. When demolishing his house after his death a fortune was found amounting to $26,000. Notes were between the pages of the family bible, behind the wallpaper and it was remembered that he always insisted on being paid in gold. A search for his hiding spot was made but after allowing an extension of time to find it the Railway had to go through. The legend is today that somewhere under the line is a fortune in gold". Regards, Diane

    1. [H,H,HV] Weak Moments!
    2. Liz
    3. Hi Diane & List, Just want to thank Di for her "weak" moment regarding the Windsor returns as at 1/1/1885! My mind just boggles with the variety of information that has been meticulously kept over time for us to look at in this era. Looking forward 100 - 200 yrs from now, I wonder what sort of information would be available to our grandchildren and grandchildren about us - our current generation. Given the strict privacy legislation provisions now, I can just imagine getting volumes of information as we do now between 1800 - 1970 or so, and then a "blank response" frm 1970 onwards! At least those of us with an interest in family history will do the right thing and provide our families with legacies of knowledge (in my case, that will be ALL they will be getting!! LOL)! Thanks again Diane and List for all of your help with my recent queries re Skuthorpes and Cribbs - still wondering about John French though! Thanks! Liz Hulin

    1. [H,H,HV] Borthwick, Brown, Broun
    2. Ann Carson
    3. Thank you very much Diane - I should post these titbits on the "Brislington" Parramatta page. There is much history about "Brislington" and no-one seems to know whether the winning card story is true but the diamonds are certainly in the brickwork. Yes, I do have quite a few more hiding in my corner (grin) but not enough time to post all the details or places. Perhaps I can cheat and just list surnames: ** BORTHWICK ** (Worldwide One Name Study as well as my own family - so I'd love to hear from any lister with any Borthwick connection at all). Associated surnames in the Hunter are CLIFT, MAYO, COOPER, PILCHER, DAISEY, FLETCHER, BUTLER ** BROWN (aka BROUN) ** of Parramatta and of "Colstoun" Upper Paterson. Descendants of John BROWN, born in Denmark, and his wife Charlotte DOWLING. Charlotte Broun, another HHHV lister, is also interested in this family. There are many associated surnames from the Hunter & Hills District, mostly Parramatta again - LINDEMAN, SHELLEY, WHITE, SUTTOR, WALSH etc ** BROWN ** The Browns of "Brislington" Parramatta and their families. Again there are many associated surnames - ARTLETT, COWPER, DOCKER, HANSEN, HERRIOTT, LLOYD, MACARTHUR, RILEY, SUTTIE, TRINKS, WHARTON If any reader is interested I do have quite a bit of information, on the early generations only of these families, on my website - especially the BORTHWICKS but gradually adding more for the other families too. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~anncarson/ Regards Ann Carson (GoONS 3727) annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au ~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Hi Ann, Just a bit of trivia in regards to "Brislington" ... "Legend has it that convict John HODGES won a fortune at a card game in the Woolpack Inn and used the money to erect this building, originally intended for an inn. A pattern of cards (his winning hand) was built into the building's rear brick wall. Completed in 1821" [C. Rivett]. According to an 1822 map of the town of Parramatta, John HODGES is listed as the proprietor/occupier of that (corner) block; and he also had a second smaller allotment within the block bounded by Phillip, Marsden, George and Church Streets. Regards, Diane ... and by the way Ann <grin> do you happen to have anyone else in the corner there with you ? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Carson" <annmacarthurc@ozemail.com.au> Subject: [H,H,HV] Parramatta - Brislington and the Brown Family > (Diane has successfully extracted me from a corner with her > encouragement re places in the Hills District!) > My BROWN family lived for many years in the home named > "Brislington" on the corner of George and Marsden Sts > Parramatta.

    1. [H,H,HV] Cribb Coincidences!
    2. Liz
    3. Hi Everyone! Thought I would let you know of a very strange series of coincidences regarding my Cribb family. Today, 4 August, 2002, marks the 200th anniversary of the landing of the Perseus 1802 at Port Jackson, (Sydney), NSW. John Cribb - born 1773 England, received life for ? in Berkshire 1797, transported to Sydney Cove per Perseus 1802. John Cribb appears to be the first of the Cribb family to arrive in Sydney (source- per D Gosper Article ) eventually followed by George (per Admiral Gambier 1808); Robert (per Earl Spencer - 1813); Thomas, Isaac and Jacob (all per Baring 1815), James (per Atlas 3 1816), another Isaac (per Atlas 1 - 1819), another Thomas (per Agememnon 1820. We are now aware of the Cribbs' nefarious association with the Cock Road Gang (thank you Marie Young for sharing the article written by Veronica Smith about the "fearsome bandits and brigands of East Bristol") They may have all been "done" for activities associated with the Cock Road Gang - to be confirmed. As you may be aware, our line is that of James Cribb who married Jane Hewitt and had several children, Mary Ann, Hannah, several others, and last but not least, Emma (1841) with three other children bearing the Cribb name, but as James had predeceased in 1841... seems to stretch the realms of possibility even now! On Saturday, I attended my first Convict Discussion group, here in Toowoomba at the Darling Downs Family History Society. I have been concentrating on solving the Cribb side of the tree for the past week or so, and have been forturnate to receive wonderful information which has given me clues to follow. While waiting for the discussion to commence, I just happened to be sitting next to a lady but one, and I overheard her mention that her "convict" was James Cribb.... and I said - "excuse me? James Cribb per AtlasIII, and she said Yes!! Well, if I had a camera for the look on everyone's faces.. Just incredulous - here was this new member - and look what occurred!! Turns out her great grandmother was Emma Cribb! the youngest child - whereas my connection is via Mary Ann Cribb - the oldest child. So, of course, we exchanged addresses - photocopied some bits and pieces such as the Conditional Pardon of James Cribb ; a transcription of the Marriage Certifcate between James & Jane Cribb and I believe she also has photos of the Cribb Vault at Richmond which she has kindly offered to me to copy/scan! What was more interesting, - is that while we were both aware of the "history" side, we each had separate resources that we could share with each other!! No Duplication what so ever! Both Lucy and I were so excited about our discovery, that it made it difficult to contain! Lucy came around this afternoon and I gave her a copy of the abovementioned articles and printed off various family group records etc that I had formulated, as well as obtaining further information about Emma Cribb and her descendents.. quite an interesting family on their own - with Emma Cribb's son, becoming the Mayor of Homebush. What's more strange is that she lives literally around the corner from me - not more than 500 metres at most, however, does not have access to the Internet! However, seeing as she is also a distant cousin - guess we can make allowances for kin! I plan on uploading all documents/photos etc that I have re Cribb and will let you all know the URL as soon as it is available. Hope the Cribb Descendents take a "nip" or two tonight in remembrance of the Perseus, two hundred years ago today! I wonder what the odds would be on 2 Cribb descendants from the same James Cribb, sitting down together at a family history society convict discussion group in Toowoomba, 200 yrs after the first Cribb arrived in Sydney Cove .... mind boggling really! Regards, Liz Hulin Liz Hulin

    3. Hi again Louise, Some of these belong to the BARR family I'm researching: >Barr Arthur Death Dagworth Maitland 1901 Arthur was the son of John BARR and Hannah RUDD "Maitland Mercury" 22 March 1901 DEATH OF THE LAD ARTHUR BARR - At an inquiry held by the Acting District Coroner (Mr F. P. Meares) into the circumstances of the death of the lad Arthur Harold Barr (16 1/2 years), killed at Dagworth on Wednesday, a verdict of accidental death was returned. It appeared that the lad had led an unbroken filly to water by means of a strap. On returning, he fastened the strap round his wrists. Something frightened the filly, and it ran away, dragging the lad, and kicking him as it ran. The boy's brother stopped the horse, and he was carried inside in an unconscious condition. The boy never rallied, and died in about half an hour - before Dr Harbison could reach the house. The lad's wrist was smashed he appeared to have a fracture of the skull, and was also kicked and battered about the face and legs. >Barr Peter Granted a Ticket of Leave - Per ship ìLloydsî Ticket of Leave Maitland >1842 Peter BARR was the father of John BARR. He married Martha HALL in 1843 in Black Creek. He was born in Argyleshire, Scotland and arrived on the "Lloyds" in 1833, after receiving a life sentence for arson. Cheers Jan
