    1. [H,H,HV] Placename: Freemans Reach and Highlands.
    2. Ian Nicholls
    3. Hi Listers, My Nicholls family lived/worked farms at Freemans Reach on the Hawkesbury from the 1840's to 1952. The family also owned some land along the "Highlands" which were/are located between Wilberforce and Freemans Reach and between the old Common and Bushells lagoon. The Highlands were thought to be safe from flooding, but in 1867 my g-grandfather, Frederick Nicholls and his wife Jane[nee Martin], were rescued by boat from the attic of their Highland house, which was located on the first ridge above the lagoon. When I was living on the farm which went down to the Hawkesbury, older members of my family always said the land along the river was the true Freemans Reach [similar to all the other Reaches on the Hawkesbury] and the hills towards the north, which is called Freemans Reach today, was called Blacktown because of an earlier Aboriginal settlement along the Blacktown road which runs from near the top of Gorricks lane towards the Highlands. Best regards.........Ian Nicholls.

    3. Place names Upper Richmond My ancestor Thomas KIRK and family are listed on the Census as being in Ham County, Upper Richmond? Also he is listed BDM as place of death Upper Richmond. any clues to where the exact location would be welcomed. A bit of trivia. 1. "Evening News" of May 2nd 1859 published the following: Bushrangers - On Saturday as Thomas Kirk and John Waters, both residents of Yellow Mundies (now called Yarramundi) were returning homeward together with their teams, they were attacked by three ruffians, disguised, between Castlereagh and Richmond. The article states that the ruffians are supposed to be well known to the police. 2. Thomas Kirk is registered as having a licence for "The Plough" in 1853, 1854; in 1856 the name changed to "The Plough Inn". This information is from "Butts and Certs. of the First Publicans Licences 1830-1860": indexed by Jean McNaught 1997. ----- Original Message ----- From: "BERNICE CALLAGHAN" <bernicec@ozemail.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2002 8:00 PM Subject: [H,H,HV] place names
