Hello Yvonne, My William Bowen came on the "Magnet" in 1827, with wife Elizabeth. I have 2 known children. Elizabeth born 1828, and Thomas born 1832. On the 1828 census both William and Elizabeth gave their ages as both 37 years old. Elizabeth jnr married Thomas Raisbeck in 1847, and Thomas died unmarried at a young age. It is quite possible that there were other children who may have come out separately will go back to the AGCI microfiche today and look to see if I can find anything more for you. I am interested in the Bowen and Raisbeck families, as Thomas and Elizabeth's son William was the 2nd husband to my gg grandmother Bridget Freel, nee Sweeney. Will contact you when I have some more information. Hello Listers, as a newbie, I am already subbed to this list under Hotmail, but unfortunately cannot open attachments. If anybody has replied to my query re BOWEN/O'BRIENBURG thank you, but I am unable to read it. So now I shall repeat. - Looking for BOWEN in Hunter Valley : Allen Michael Bowen b. 8/5/28 m. Marie Therese BURG b.c 1930 possibly in Maitland. Allen was son of James Bowen and Jane O'Brien of Hexham. Interested in corresponding with any relatives of these people . Yvonne
Desperately trying to find confirmation of the liaison between the above, plus parents. They had 3 sons, John, Alexander and Thomas. John and Alexander married two Clarke sisters of Pitt Town. On Alex's death cert it gives the above (John Neich and Frances Lowe) as his parents, but I need to confirm who JOhn's parents were. I am doing a book on Emanuel Neich and we feel he is the father, however, there are no birth, marriage or death records of JOhn Neich ( senior ). Descendants of Alexander say he would not talk about his parents. There doesnt seem to be any birth or death cert for John Neich (junior). Both John and Alex are buried at Pitt Town. Kind regards Lina
Hello Yvonne, I also am researching the family of Bowen. My William Bowen arrived with his wife Elizabeth, on the ship "Magnet" in 1827. There are a number of references to William on the AGCI microfiche of convicts assignments, and land transactions. William successfully applied for 3 land grants from governors Gipps and Brisbane. One such grant was subdivided up and was sold off to family and friends and was known as "Farmborough". The township became Black Creek, now called Branxton. William and Elizabeth had two children. Thomas and Elizabeth jnr. Thomas died young unmarried. Elizabeth married Thomas Raisbeck and inherited his father landholdings. Thomas and Elizabeth's son William married my gg grandmother Bridget Sweeney. He was her 2nd husband. As yet I have not found the entry into the colony for Thomas. Why did William Bowen come to the Maitland area? As yet I have not found out. I also have heard of John and Mary Bowen living there, and am trying to find out if they are connected. I saw the "Magnet's" reel a few weeks ago which lists the passengers, unfortunately no mention of where the Bowen's came from. The 1828 census on CD also shows the household of William Bowen, and who the convicts were working for him. Hoping this is of help to you, best wishes in your research. Dear List I am searching for information on Edward BOYLE, who was married to Mary Ann MOORE. With a son named Thomas they came from Ireland on the ship 'Aloe' in 1857 and then I find they lived in Richmond NSW. Edward jr was born there in 1859. Edward Snr died in 1860 aged 30. They also had another son William John a bit younger than Thomas but I don't know when he was born or where. After the death of Edward Mary Ann BOYLE (nee MOORE) married James MAHONEY at Windsor in 1862. They must have moved to Queensland because Thomas BOYLE married in 1880 up there and a Mrs J MAHONY was a witness on the birth of Thomas' grandson, Guy Linton, who was my grandfather. Does anyone know if there is a connection between BOYLE and MAHONEY and West Maitland? I have a photo of who I am sure is Thomas BOYLE about 1880s from a West Maitland Photographic studio. I had been trying to work out why he was in NSW before I found out he had lived at Richmond. Thankyou - from Sharyn Wright --------------------------------- Yahoo! A few thoughts regarding cemeteries in the Hawkesbury.....re the recent article in the SMH. Wilberforce Cemetery is indeed a very historical cemetery (as are the numerous final resting places dotted throughout the Hawkesbury Valley) and many pioneering families have family buried in Wilberforce. Members of the Hawkesbury Family History Group have recently re-transcribed & photographed headstones for a planned publication. Hawkesbury City Council is responsible for the upkeep of the grounds & the cemetery is covered under the Hawkesbury City Council's Local Environmental Plan which means it is on their Heritage List. The Council and the National Trust offers advice for families/individuals that wish to conserve certain historical headstones. It is important to remember that any restoration/conservation works on headstones needs prior approval through the Council. There are certain guidelines that are necessary to adhere to, i.e. what is acceptable and what are bad practices...In the past some enthusiastic family historians have actually damaged headstones due to poor advice & good intentions so be guided by the professionals. The National Trust have an excellent document on their website regarding Cemeteries called "Guidelines of Cemetery Conservation" http://www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/cemscontents.html Some suggestions include : "One of the most effective ways to ensure cemetery conservation is to encourage interest and appreciation within the community. This draws attention of both the general public and decision-makers to the value of the site and the need for maintenance. It also provides a basis for opposition in the event of unwise proposals for development or "improvement". Also....."The descendants of those buried are then encouraged to look after individual sites, improving the overall appearance and again discouraging vandalism. In time, the whole community will hopefully take a civic pride in the cemetery". A suggestion may be for interested persons to establish a "Friends group" that could assist with seeking funding from various bodies? Hi Alan, An interesting article, thanks for that. The slope of the cemetery, in parts, and bad drainage, would probably also contribute to some of the deterioration and damage. Perhaps the "voice" of the people, by way of a petition to the Heritage Council (funding) and/or Hawkesbury Council needs to be heard ... ? Out of courtesy to all subscribers ... Please remember to delete any unneccessary portions or previous threads of an email you may be replying to, and only retain just enough of the 'original' or the 'specific' message, so others have some idea of what your reply relates to. Each and every time a message is sent to a Rootsweb mailing list, an Ancestry trailer is automatically added by Rootsweb, so at times we see a message or thread with several of these trailers at the bottom. It's best to delete these as well, as one will be automatically added to your message when you send it to the list anyway ! Messages containing previous threads (and trailers) attached at the bottom are not necessary, make for repeated reading (which can be annoying), and means longer message download time for some. So, for the benefit of all subscribers, please scroll down and reveiw your message before sending, and delete/snip/cut any unneccessary portions ... basic email netiquette. Thanks :) Diane
