Hello again Listers. Does anyone have connections to a Joseph Downing WOOD or WOODS please? In 1868 he married (possibly this was a second marriage for him) Mary Ann (or Mary Annabella HAWKINS) . This probably occurred at West Maitland. They had 3 daughters: 1: Ada Jane WOOD(S) born 1866; 2: Mary A.M. (or Marian M) WOOD(S) born 1868 & died 1869; 3: Eva May WOOD(S) born 1870. As the mother died in 1873; I expect that the father married again. The NSW BD&M indexes show what is possibly his first marriage: in 1864 to a Catherine HALL; then the 1866 marriage to Mary A. HAWKINS. It also shows an 1876 marriage to a Margaret A. FARRELL, which may again be a third marriage for him. I'd be grateful for any information which listers might have about him, any of the above marriages, and any children of any marriages -- and especially any details concerning his daughters Ada Jane & Eva May WOOD(S). Thanks in hopeful anticipation: Ray
Hello Everyone. I have an extremely distant connection to a CROWE family of West Maitland. Is anyone else out there researching this family name in that location please? More specifically, my interest is Caroline Elizabeth HEWETT, who married William F.A. CROWE at West Maitland in 1893. Grateful for any leads, etc. Thanks: Ray
Hi Maureen, You could try searching the parish and pastoral maps for Dungog or Clarencetown at http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/maps/parish.html Regards Ken Croft _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Hi Listers, Just thought I would share a family story with the list. Perhaps others have had interesting skeletons as well. If so, would you share your story? Here is mine. My paternal grandfather, Ernest James AUSTIN was born in West Maitland in 1895. He was the son of Charles (Chas) AUSTIN & Winifred Rosanna WILLIAMS. His siblings were Florence Ellen (1883), David William (1886), William (1888), Winifred (1892), Reginald (1896) and Pearl (1899). Tracing this paternal line has been challenging! To begin with, my fathers cousin informed me many years ago, that when my grandfather was young (maybe aged two yrs), his father died in a horrific accident. Several years ago, I decided to research this paternal line. I could not confer with any known living relatives as they had all died. Being a bit of a novice, I could never understand why I couldn't unravel anything. To begin with, I tried to find the death of my g.grandfather, Charles, between 1895-1900. I read and read all sorts of films but never found a death. (Am still looking) Two items of interest that I stumbled upon was my g.grandmother appeared to have had two children posthumously!!! Ridiculous, I thought. One posthumous child is acceptable but two born three years apart! Back, to the drawing board. I then discovered, my g.grandmother, Winifred had remarried. In 1906 she married John DIXON in Sydney. Now this still didnt explain the birth of Reginald (1896) & Pearl (1899). Who was their father? The birth record for Reginald & Pearl list no name of the father. Woe is me. A few months ago, I received the marriage record of Charles & Winifred. What joy that brought me. At the bottom of the certificate, there was an entry that stated Winifred had divorced Charles in 1905. Hallelujah I exclaimed, Great Grandfather never died in a horrific accident I found a skeleton in the closet. I now know why my grandfather was Ernest James DIXON in WW1. In 1912, all his siblings surnames were legally changed to DIXON. By WW2, my grandfather had reverted back to the AUSTIN surname. I wonder now if he changed his name legally back to AUSTIN. A death certificate would be a clue.:-) At the end day, I keep on searching, looking for evidence and tossing the anecdotal data out the window. I wonder if anyone on the list has a similar tale or perhaps related to this line!! Lesley _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Would any lister know of "Quinn's Paddock" which was somewhere in the Clarence Town/Dungog area. I'm not sure if this was listed as the name of the locality, but was definitely known by this name locally during the early 1900's. I believe it was also shown on some maps, but have been unable to locate any which include a reference to the name. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Maureen.
Hi Listers, I am extremely grateful to ALL the suggestions about the Home in the Strathfield region. Lots of avenues to pursue!! The Uniting Church Achivist, Daryl Lightfoot, may have more information on Dalmar. Phone 9683 3147 Mon, Tue, 4th Sat. By the way, the Uniting Church Records & Historical Society operates from Eskdale,a former Burnside Home, 3 Blackwood Place North Parramatta - some Presbyterian assets were transferred to the Uniting Church following union. Burnside Homes, run by the Presbyterian Church, operated on both sides of Pennant Hills Road. The first Home, Blairgowrie, opened in 1911 and is now a Museum. The Redeemer Baptist Church now owns the buildings and land on the western side of the road and conducts a school on the site. Uniting Care Burnside still operates on the eastern side. For more information on current activities and their Museum see www.burnside.org.au The Church of England Children's Home, Minden Hall, had been established in 1914 on the eastern side of Pennant Hills Road, north of Burnside. In the 1920s it was used exclusively for boys but eventually became a Home for Girls. A new Church of England Home for Girls on Pennant Hills Road and the western corner of Gibbons Street was built in 1929. The site is now a training college for the Church of Christ. In 1927 a new Home for Boys was founded on an 8.3 acre property on Pennant Hills Road and named Buckland Home after its benefactor Sir Thomas Buckland. In 1928 three more homes were built on this property. Try the Infants Home, Ashfield, near Sydney. Opened 1874, still operating in 1970s (and probably now). Intended as place for delivery of babies of unwed mothers. Most of the mothers in 19th century were domestic servants. Minute books held at the Mitchell Library in Sydney. Evening John, Jane, and others Clifford was the name of an early 1820's land grant to John DIGHT Snr. (850 acres) ... which looks like it may have remained in the family for quite a few years, as an S.B. DIGHT (perhaps Samuel Billingsley) had a holding of the same name, 550 acres, at Singleton c. 1885. Hope this helps ... Hi, I have a marriage certificate which lists the place of marriage as Clifford Farm, Clifford which was where the bride worked as a servant. The groom lived at Spensers Farm (this was 1856). The place of registration is given in the Index as Patrick Plains, so presumably near Singleton. The death of both was Stringy Bark Creek and their burial was at Camberwell which has the same PC as Singleton. Does anyone know more than this about any of these places? I believe this/these were Burnside Homes. These were operated by the Presbyterian Church (before Union at least) while Dalwood was operated by the Methodist Church (before Union).
