Pretty I have read it before I have been trying to find out about a similar occurrence that happening in 1803 when Israel RAYNER allegedly sold his wife Elizabeth to Henry BALDWIN for a large black pig and 6 bushels of wheat This apparently was in a book written by a Roderick BEST called 'The Early Colonial Family ' and is on p 57 . Too date I have been unable to unearth any copy of this book Roderick BEST was co author of the book ' Where 1st Fleeters lie " . Quite a few copies of that about . A few weeks ago I happened to mention this to someone when it hit me that this ref I have was anything but a primary record ! I got this from the SAG a few years ago . Have emailed them a few days ago Earlier this week I was out at State Records, Kingswood, and this was on my list of things to find about but they had no records of any such goings on ???? Anyway Henry & Elizabeth went on to found a dynasty . Nearly all their children had unusual names ...Arlette, Harvest, Bemarr, Wynn, Virgo , Wellow , Dido & Tulip etc . 3. I know listers have all probably heard this story but thought there may be a few out there that had not and may enjoy!!! AN ACCOUNT OF A MOST DISGRACEFUL TRANSACTION - 1811 "A person (for a man I cannot call him) of the name of Ralph Mulkins, led his lawful wife into our streets on the 28th ultimo, with a rope round her neck, and publicly exposed her for sale; and, shameful to be told, another fellow, equally contemptible, called Thomas Quire, actually purchased and paid for her on the spot, sixteen pounds in money, and some yards of cloth. I am sorry to add, that the woman herself was so devoid of those feelings which are justly deemed the most valuable in her sex, agreed to the base traffic, and went off with the purchaser, significantly hinting, that she had no doubt her new possessor would make her a better husband that the wretch she then parted from. This business was conducted in so public a manner, and so far outraged all laws human or divine, that a Bench of Magistrates, consisting of Mr. Cox, the Rev. Mr. Cartwright, and Mr. Mileham, had it publicly investigated on Saturday last, and lal the odious circumstances having been clearly proved, and even admitted by the base wretches themselves, the Bench sentenced this no-man to receive 50 lashes, and put to hard labour in irons in the gaol gang at Sydney for the space of three calendar months; and the woman to be transported to the Coal River for an indefinite time. The public indignation at so gross a violation of decency was most unequivocally expressed, by the acclamations with which th esentence was received by a numerous concourse of people who assembled to know the event of so extraordinary and unprecendented business." 1. Re: [H,H,HV] Tara Edgeware Road Newtown
    2. Helen Dickinson
    3. Hi again, I just had a thought. I used to live just near Edgeware Rd & recall a building which could have been "Tara". It is now operated as a community service organisation, run by volunteers called GROW. Their National Website says the organisation started in 1954 (but may not have at this address). In the 30 years I have been around that area the building has never changed. I tried to phone them but there was no answer. With my local knowledge of Edgeware Road, this is the only substantial building that could have been "Tara", as most of the street is small single story houses & some 2 story terraces with 5 metre frontages, there is a high school further up & some shops but the building I am thinking of is down near the railway line on the St Peters end. I think State Archives might be your best port of call but unfortunately I can not do anything for you this side of Christmas. I am happy to go into State Archives, Globe St, Sydney, but not till after Christmas when things quieten down. I am only 20 minutes away. Let me know if I can help. Maybe another posting to the list might find someone else going there sooner. Telephone (02) 9516 3733 FAX (02) 9516 1503 Postal address GROW National Centre 209A Edgeware Road ENMORE NSW 2042 Electronic mail General Information: No email address at this time. Edgeware road is not very long but can be recorded as being in Newtown, Enmore or Marrickville as it borders all these suburbs. Stanmore Road is the continuation of Edgeware Road. 3. Dear List, I have on loan copies of the following Tom McClelland books of the Nundle cemeteries, Treasured Memories and Gold Pioneers and Memories of a Golden Era. They have a lot of information on my Nundle families. I am desperate to get copies of my own. I understand that they are no longer for sale and that the author is not selling them anymore. Does anybody have or know of anybody that has unwanted copies of these books? More than happy to pay all costs, including postage. Any assistance in tracking down copies would be appreciated. 1. [H,H,HV] Re: Divorce

    3. My “divorce” story is as follows : Charles Robert Jennings was born in Braidwood in 1867 by the late 1880s he had moved to the Central Coast, his occupation was listed as a sawyer. He married Mabyn Bridge (aged 17) in Newcastle in 1892. They settled in settled in Wyong & they had 4 children. Mabyn was not happy in the marriage and she eventually left her husband & 4 young kids in 1903 & moved to Sydney and lived with an uncle. Charles followed her and asked that she return home with him but she did not want to & refused. He then went to a solicitor & commenced divorce proceedings. Mabyn went on to have a relationship with an Edward Jarman & had at least 2 children, she then m. Charles Edward McGovern in 1919. At some time after Mabyn left, Charles engaged a housekeeper, Helena Bridget Smith (from Wollombi) to care for the young children. A relationship developed but Charles & Helena could not marry as Charles was still trying to obtain a divorce. Charles & Helena eventually moved in together and started their own family in 1905. They had 6 children all born at Wyong including my Grandma, Florence Lucy. Eventually Charles & Mabyn’s marriage was dissolved in 1916 at the Supreme Court of NSW and Charles & Helena were free to marry. They married at the Registry Office in Sydney a few days later and returned to their home in Wyong, their children were not aware of what had happened, although they remembered their parents going off on a “holiday” to Sydney. In the 1920s the children were legitimised and of the children were duly baptised in 1921. Often the clue of "divorce" is on a marriage certificate. Following the advice of Angela Phippen from SAG a few years back, I followed the divorce through and located their Decree Absolute & Decree Nisi in the Sydney Morning Herald. It provided that Charles was the petitioner and gives the name of the Judge. I then checked at State Records for the Judge's Notebook, which is free. It supplied a basic transcript of the case and provided me with a lot more background information about the divorce. One can also contact the Supreme Court, Family Law Division & seek permission to see the original records. There is a fee for retreiving these records. I have not followed this up as yet but have been told that although there is a lot of legal jargon they are worth checking out. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. 3. Hello to the list The following is a big brick wall that was presented to the workshop of the Maitland Family History Circle last week The brother of the David is in his late 80's and would like to know about this brother that has been unknown to the family till now Does " Tara" still operate ? Any reply or suggestion could be sent to me and I will pass it on at our weekly workshop "David Alexander Phillips was born at "Tara" Edgeware Road Newtown on 10 October 1913. Mother Hilda May Phillips aged 20 years who was born at Nabiac NSW. Her Sydney address was 90 Stanmore road Stanmore and the fathers name was not shown. We presume that he was adopted and the only hope we have of finding him is if we can find a record somewhere of his adoption to show his new name. I have searched all the NSW Births Deaths & Marriages CD's but can find no marriage or death up to 1945 for anyone of that name. We also contacted the Family Information Service but they could find no legal adoption having occurred as legal adoptions did not come in until the early 1920's. A friend looked up the Sands Directory and discovered that Tara was owned in 1913 by Mrs. Starkie and that it was at that time a private hospital. I would be grateful for any leads that I can follow to see if we can locate David Alexander or his descendants in the event that he is no longer living."
