    1. RE: [H,H,HV] Cemetery in hotel grounds
    2. John Tainsh
    3. Journalists shouldn't make claims about the whole world, or even Australia. There is a hotel in Tasmania in a fairly remote place on the shores of a lake and popular with fishermen (and women I suppose) with a grave at the front door. As I remember it is almost impossible to enter the hotel without walking on the grave. I can't remember the details of who it was or even the name of the hotel. John Tainsh -----Original Message----- From: Rod Gow [mailto:rgow@ceinternet.com.au] Sent: Monday, December 09, 2002 5:08 PM To: AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [H,H,HV] Cemetery in hotel grounds While indexing the Windsor & Richmond Gazette newspaper of 11 November 1907, we found the following article and thought it may be of interest to some on the list, especially those researching NOWLAND family. Best wishes, Rod & Wendy Gow Hallowed Ground A Neglected Cemetery There is probably no other place in Australia, if indeed in the whole world, where a graveyard is situated in the grounds of an hotel. This curious situation is to be seen at Tomerong, thirteen miles from Nowra. At the junction of the Jervis Bay and main South Coast roads stands the Commercial Hotel, and attached to its grounds, on the Bay road side, is Gods acre - the resting place of the early pioneers, and the property of the local publican. We dont want to write sorrow on the bosom of the earth, (says the Nowra Leader) but it struck us as being singularly incongruous that the plot of ground, which has been hallowed by the deposition there of the remains of those who lived and died nearly half a century ago, should be part and parcel of the hotel yard. It comes about this way - Mr. John Parnell, who was one of the first residents of Tomerong, conducted the local hotel, and owned the property upon which it is built. Years ago - probably 45 years - he gave the people of Tomerong part of the property - about an acre, a few paces from the building - as a public cemetery. No legal transfer of the land to any trust was ever made, and apparently none was ever asked for. Burials took place from time to time, and nobody ever thought of the necessity for getting the property handed over.. Bye and bye Mr. Parnell died without having conveyed the property to a trust, and when the estate came to be disposed of the local publican found that he had purchased the graveyard, probably the first and only public graveyard that has been sold in Australia. And this is the situation as it exists to-day. It is difficult to tell how many bodies have been interred in the ground, but there are standing nearly twenty fences, in a state of disrepair. and also a few headstones. Probably thirty or forty graves are absolutely beyond identification. In fact crops are being cultivated above the remains of many forgotten pioneers. And unless something is done by the people of Tomerong the fences will disappear one by one, and in a few short years not a record will remain of the good people who braved the vicissitudes of the earlier times. Mr. John Nowland, son of Mr. M. Nowland, of Mountain View, Richmond, recently purchased the estate which embraces the cemetery, so he is the owner of the only graveyard that has ever been sold in Australia. - (Editor of the Gazette) ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    3. As some listers may be aware about 12 months ago I wrote a book about the 1867 floods & the 1874 fire in Windsor. I have reproduced one of the lists from the book below, for interest. Michelle Nichols LOWER HAWKESBURY DISTRIBUTION LIST 1867 Following the 1867 flood the Colonial Secretary, wrote to James Walmsley, George Black, Henry Wilson & William Cross regarding the suffering of the Lower Hawkesbury inhabitants. The Government supplied certain items but requested that only the "persons suffering from actual and urgent destitution" were to be assisted. They were not to aid anyone who sustained losses from the floods but were still able to help themselves. The following rules were provided to guide them. 1. Persons whose houses have been destroyed in addition to the loss of their farm produce, furniture and effects will be entitled to first consideration according to their number of children ad their means of self help. 2. Persons whose homes are left standing but who lost everything else including furniture and effects will be entitled to second considerations in the same manner. 3. Persons whose homes have been reached by the floods but have lost their crops and stock and are without present means to support will be entitled to third consideration in the same way. As of the 15 July 1867 a total of 460 persons had been given assitance in the Lower Hawkesbury and the following items distributed : 9,974 lbs of flour; 14 quarts and 18 pint pannikins; 32 bags of potatoes; 100 blankets; 789lbs salt; 1,699 lbs beef 1052 lbs sugar 153 lbs tea 43 lbs cornflour 8 bottles of port wine; 18 pairs of trousers; 19 coats; 36 chemises; 46 hose; 24 woollen shirts; 6 saucepans; 6 frying pans & 12 (?) woollen hose. 3. Dear Dawn, There are 5 entries for Thomas Jones in the Parramatta Chronicle 1843-45 newspaper index that we recently published. (probably not all the same man). We have extracted the following two that seem to relate to Windsor district as we thought they may be of interest. The first one was the entry that we referred to in our last e-mail. Jones Thomas or John Thomas Ticket of Leave Windsor - per ship ìEarl Greyî 2 edition = 25 Oct 1845 page = 1 column =4 Jones Thomas (T of L) Legal Windsor edition =1 Nov 1845 page 2 column 4 This newspaper is available on the internet for viewing via Acrobat Reader at ... <http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/bfull/14403439_bfull.html> It can be read on or off line, we find it is quicker if you have your settings to save to disc. Hope this is of interest, Dawn (there are several hundred of entries for the Windsor/Richmond district). The first one from Helen Dickinson re the NSW BDM's Hilda May Phillips marriage to John Stanley Power yes that is the correct one and the death of David Phillips at Laurieton SMH 11/5/94 very interesting, we are going up to Pt Macquarie this weekend so will see if I can find the grave. I do have the address for SMH death notices. Also will contact Margaret Phillips re her research into the Phillips family. >From Lesley Yes I suspected it was a home for unwed mothers. Gran also was living at 90 Stanmore Road Stanmore which is a stones throw from Edgeware Rd and I suspect that the same people owned this building as the ones who owned Tara. But not as yet been able to properly establish this. Please pass on thanks to H Dickinson re info on Edgeware Road and Newtown in general, very helpful >From Tony Moore I will email archives and see what I can get >From Betty Candy I did look at the Newtown website when I first started looking some months ago but there was nothing helpful will try again. Last one from Helen Dickinson re her contact with the Local Studies Librarian at Marrickville I also contacted them when I first started looking and was from there that I discovered the owner of Tara in 1913. Just to fill you in on this, I was told that the owner in 1913 was Henry T Rozea, a dentist so I researched the Rozea family and thought I was on to something when I found that Henry T and his wife had a daughter in 1911 and the daughter died in 1912. I thought perhaps they had arranged adoption of Gran's baby after they lost their own however I went on to discover that Mrs Rozea committed suicide in March 1913 and as Gran's baby was born in October 1913 it would have been highly unlikely that adoption was the case. A friend in Qld, after I had told her of this, also looked up the Sands Directory and realised that it was like the White Pages and printed a year in advance and discovered that in the 1914 edition Tara was owned by Mrs Starkie and was a private hospital. I have followed Jenny Fawcett's advice and sent letters to all the ministers in charge of the mainstream churches in that area and am waiting to see what I get from that. There are a number of different churches there now for instance The Rock Christian Faith Centre and the Church of the Foursquare Gospel which I didn't bother with as I am sure they weren't' t around in 1913. We are having our family Christmas get together this weekend at Pt Macquarie leaving early Friday morning, so will be unable to do anything else now until next week as I have to prepare food, pack etc. Once again thank you to yourselves and all your contacts, people are very kind aren't they? Bye for now Marie Power FernhillRd@bigpond.com
