I hope listers had a joyous Christmas......the following has done the rounds on various lists over the las few years but thought some may have missed out.....it is what most of us wish for..... "Genealogy Christmas Wish List I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Steubenhoffmannschild or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or James Green or Mary Abbott. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year -- subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate glass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as councilmen, schoolteachers, county clerks and town historians. I want relatives who `religiously' wrote in the family Bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, who had paintings made of their houses, and who dated every piece of paper they touched. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. But most of all, I want relatives I can FIND!!!" _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Betty, Thomas Jones family lived in the Windsor area. Dawn
I too would like to congratulate Diane on a great job and trust all the other listers will have a safe, happy and healthy festive season and lots of genealogical research luck in 2003. Michelle Nichols Christmas memories of long ago A story for Christmas from the Windsor & Richmond Gazette 24th December 1926, was compiled by local historian, William Freame early last century. It goes : The old mail coach, despite its limitations, was inseparably associated with Christmas holidays - when we were boys the great lumbering, leather springed coach with three great lamps in front, drawn by four horses fresh from the last change, whose hoofs beat out merry music as we go over the bridge, under which "leaps the wild torrent from chasm to chasm." Those were the days, the good old days, "when the world was wide" and life was full of adventure. We turn the corner and glimpse the river, like a silver ribbon winding through the valley. Bump! Bump! Over a log; we hang for a minute over the valley, and reach the top and pull up at the Selector's Arms with its menu of lamb, sheep, ram or mutton. We are crossing the flat now a tiny wreath of smoke looses itself in the timber, a bark hut looms in the clearing and two of its children bestraddle the slip rails, a bundle of newspapers cleave the air, "A Merry Christmas - A Merry Christmas" and their tiny voices are swallowed in the silence of the bush. We glimpse the township, we lose it as the road dips down through a gully, then winds again, over another bridge that spans a lazy creek, and up the street where stands in all the glory of its tin-roof "The Travellers Rest [North Richmond] with its generous supply of "am and heggs". We wander o'er the old mail routes and live again the days that are gone; phantom horses and drivers haunt deserted "Macquarie Arms" [Windsor] and "Royal Hotel" [Richmond] hide their weatherworn signboards in grey old barns; "Diggers Rests" delicensed these 30 years or more, have reached decrepit old age, and in their second childhood, dispense hop beer and brandy snaps and in an old slab shed remains all that is left for Cobb and Co. Dusty and rusty, its leather blinds all tattered, but what memories it evokes! Memories of other days and other ways, of friends and scenes long since passed away. They come back again and once more we are on the road again "Hark; the bells on distant cattle Waft across the range, Through the golden tufted wattle Music low, and strange" GORDON We touch the old coach again. Goodness! How all comes back again. Yes! It's Christmas times again, see the children? There they are, out on the slip rails, they are greeting the aeroplane. "Yes Christmas is Coming" ================================================================ According to the Windsor & Richmond Gazette (now the Hawkesbury Gazette) 21 December 1889, "Yes, Christmas is Coming" Woodhill's & Co. a general store located in Richmond, advertised "Christmas presents for one and all". They were selling christmas fruits - raisins, currants, sultanas plus presents such as christmas vases made from bronze, porcelain & glass. They also had Woodhill's celebrated blend of tea, packed in 10lb boxes selling from 12/6. Toys were available for sale from 1d, which included whistles to Guinea Dolls. Other items on sale to discerning shoppers were silk handkerchiefs, Christmas Picnic hats, trimmed for 2s 6d and Christmas Suits to fit men and boys. Most importantly they had Christmas Trees in all styles! ================================================================ "After being baffled and teased for these last five days with contrary winds and Calms, and tacking backwards and forwards in all directions between the numerous Islands and Rocks with which these Straits abound, the Wind at length shifted round to the South West at 2 o'clock this morning, and blew a fine fresh Breeze driving us on to our destined Port at the rate of Five Knots an hour: thus we have at length a prospect of getting out of Bass's Straits in the course of 24 hours in case the Breeze lasts as it is now at Noon -- when we were going six Knots. ---The Wind continued all day equally good & fair. ---We sat down in consequence of this agreeable change in the weather, in very good spirits at 5 o'clock to our Christmas Dinner in Bass's Straits; having ordered a good Dinner with some Drink for the Sailors in honor of this holy and sacred Day!" _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Hello Valerie, I am just going through my old emails and came across yours. Lately I have been speaking to a Janet and Ray Raisbeck who is descendant from Henry Raisbeck and Agnes Ballentine/Henry Raisbeck and Alice Gordon. We have been exchanging information, and I have done some more research on the family. This is what I know: Henry Raisbeck born circa 1769 married Ann Simpson on 2.4.1798 at Ronaldkirk, Cumbria he died on 8.3.1823 (off the net - to be confirmed Ray has contacted a researcher). Children: Thomas born 14.8.1808 Sarah born 9.4.1801 Henry born 18.8.1803 Jane born 14.8.1805 Edward born 8.5.1807 Ralph Simpson born 3.1.1811 To date I haven't been able to find the shipping of Thomas Raisbeck into the colony but note the following on the "Edward Oliver" in 1856 Anne 5 Anne 42 Benjamin 18 George 48 Mary 15 William 12 I still need to look at this reel as there may have been a miss spell in the transcriptions, and Thomas may still be there as a relative under unmarried men. Thomas's death certificate states that he arrived in the colony circa 1845. Thomas Raisbeck married Elizabeth Bowen on 12.1.1847. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Bowen arrived "Magnet" 1827 with his wife Elizabeth. Both aged 27 years. Elizabeth jnr was born 20.1.1828 at Maitland, her brother Thomas born on 1.1.1832 never married, died 7.1.1851 (reconveyance of land holdings states death dates of both William & Thomas) William Bowen died 6.4.1850 - have not as yet found any obituary. The children of Thomas Raisbeck and Elizabeth Bowen Included: William born at Branxton 14.11.1847 he married Bridget Sweeney/Freel 23.12.1909 after a long partnership, and died 29.9.1920 at Branxton. (Bridget is my gg grandmother) Henry born 1848 at Branxton married Agnes Ballentine in 1872 Thomas born 1851 died 11.9.1856 William & Bridget's children included: Maria born 2.3.1863 at Branxton died 20.8.1868 Rebecca born 26.12.1869 at Branxton died 3.1.1870 Manassah born 12.3.1871 at Branxton married Martha R Geary 15.1.1900 died 26.3.1947 Possibly William Henry born 24.12.1865 Branxton, married Bridget Kenna 3.12.1884,died 12.9.1935 at Parramatta. (There is some doubt as to whether he is William's son or that of James Freel. The latter disappearing sometime after 1861 - William or Henry sometimes called himself Raisbeck or Freel, and his wife died as Freel.) Henry Raisbeck and Agnes Ballentine's children included: Mary born 1871 at Cassilis married 1. Frederick Gore 1888, 2. Charles Hughes 1898 Henry born 28.10.1872 at Branxton married Alice Gordon 26.1.1898 he died 21.8.1941 Thomas born 1875 at Maitland married Violet Davy/Davey (his children included Charles the Painter and Phyllis Rosina Raisbeck the Opera Singer- the latter still alive). George born 1877 at Maitland died 30.6.1882 Agnes Died and Henry remarried Emily Louisa Macey on 15.9.1920. There were no children to this marriage. I am only too happy to give you Ray's snail mail address if you would like it. Unfortunately he is not on email. Hoping you have a merry Christmas. Sarah Loder daughter of George and Charlotte (Stroud) Loder married Robert Ireland (convict) in 1822. Robert died in 1838. Sarah married Thomas Jones 1844. I would like to share information with anyone who is connected to this family. Regards Dawn
Today, the Glenorie and Hillside community bid a fond farewell to Mr. Adam 'Eddie' Halcrow. Eddie passed away suddenly whilst trying to protect his beloved Hillside home and orchard during the devastating fires that swept through the Glenorie community on 4th December, 2002. A descendant of the pioneering Halcrow family from the Shetland Isles, Eddie was well known throughout the Hills District, an area steeped in agricultural history. He was one of the few remaining large-scale commercial orchardists, continuing the family tradition passed on by his father and uncles before him. Many kind words were spoken ... a highly respected member of the local community, a real gentleman and somewhat of a local legend. He will be sorely missed by those who had the honour of knowing him. "May the road rise to meet him" D.
