    3. Dear Carol, Possibly better than a will is the Deceased Estate papers which are located at STate Records KINGSWOOD, 6 days a week. Sometimes there is a will in it. Finish about 1960 though. 3. Carol, Presuming you live in Sydney: Wills - from 1788 to 1901 inclusive - have been filmed by LDS. Copies of films should be available at your LDS centre. Also SAG in Sydney has a copy I understand that because of copyright reasons or an agreement between SAG and LDS that photocopying of the film is not permitted at SAG. It is at LDS though. Probate index - from 1788 to about 1985 - produced by Supreme Court, Probate Division. Available most research centres, i.e., State Library, municipal libraries, genealogical societies, State Records. etc. Some centres don't have the latest fiche, perhaps only to about 1980. Deceased estate files - originals for NSW 1884-1958 held at State Records of NSW, Kingswood repository. --------- All are free to look up (except if you want a copy - then price of a photocopy) Some deceased estate files include a copy of the will (but don't count on it). If you want a copy of a will after 1901 you would need to apply to Supreme Court, Probate Division. Last time I checked they were still charging like wounded buffalo - probably more like the whole herd now <g>. So be wary. Alison :-) Sydney Oz ------------- Carol Dale wrote: > Dear List, > > Can anybody help me in respect of the availability of wills and > probate documents. 3. Hi everyone, Just a :) reminder to <snip> those long email replies. Bill's response to a post, which I am using "just" as an example, gives a good idea of what <snipping> is all about ... (hope you don't mind Bill) ============================= Dear Don, National Records at Chester Hill should have a complete file on the Post Office at Kurrajong, from which you may get some interesting information. Sincerely, Bill Morlu wrote: > Hi everyone.... I'm new to the list. > > Interest is in Thomas Walker and wife Mary Ann Mahoney, my great ========================== Bill's reply is at the top, followed by a snipped (edited) portion of Morlu's "original" post. Like Bill has done, you only need to retain just enough of the original post/query in your reply, so that others have some idea of what the reply refers to. Delete/snip/cut out any uneccessary portions of the original post, and any of the previous messages that may be attached underneath (a thread), including any trailers (those are the Ancestry ones that Rootsweb automatically puts at the bottom of "each" and "every" message that is sent to the list). When you send a reply, one will be added ! If several people reply, and a thread begins, and nobody <snips> you end up with long messages containing a whole lot of previous posts, and a heep of these trailers at the bottom. A lot of people probably already know about <snipping>, so I don't mean (or want) to sound like a broken record :), but some people may not know and therefore do not <snip> ... but now they do :) Just a simple ask .... so we don't get toooo much repeated reading in a whole lot of long, long, and longer messages. And depending on your mail program, you can always ask it not to " include message in reply" .... but that's entirely up to you. Enjoy your weekend folks :) Diane (Admin)

    3. Hi Robert, They most certainly are the JEANS from Stourpaine, (& Durweston) Dorset, England, & yes there are a few NEW - JEANS marriages & JEANS - JEANS marriages between 1st & 2nd cousins. There were several JEANS & related families who come to Australia from Dorset. The first JEANS family member to arrive in Australia was; Frances (Fanny) JEANS & her husband, Benjamin WEEKS in 1837 per "The Brothers" - recruited by Edward Macarthur to work on the Macarthur Estate. Jane NEW (widow) nee Monkton & her children arrived in 1849 per "Emigrant" James BECKINGHAM who married Georgina Ainsworth JEANS also arrived in 1849 per "Emigrant" with his family Malachi JEANS & Martha Jane nee AINSWORTH arrived in 1855 per "Lord Hungerford" John & Martha JEANS nee DIBBEN arrived in 1856 per "Persia" along with 10 other members of the NEW family. All the above JEANS are descendents of Joseph JEANS & Elizabeth nee SHEPHERD m. 1738 Durweston, Dorset, England. I have 21 NEW's in my database. I am descended from John & Martha JEANS nee DIBBEN. Susan JEANS their 9th child who married James William BARDEN , were my g grandparents. Henry John JEANS, the son of Michael JEANS & Catherine nee SCOTT, was the Secretary & later a Director of The Muswellbrook Coal Company. Would love to hear from anyone with a connection to the above to fill in a few gaps but I also have a lot to exchange. Which part of the west did your NEW family settle? I have seen that name mentioned in the Central West & Pilliga areas recently. These New's lived around Maitland and Inverell. There were other New's from Dorset at Camden and Temora but they were different to the Maitland News. There were also New's out west, they were from Worcestershire ( my News ). I used to have some information on the Dorset News and Jeans which I investigated by mistake. There is also some information about them on Jeans-L at Rootsweb. If my memory serves me correctly one was called Malachi Jeans. 3. I should have Googled before replying June! I think your information might be a clue well worth pursuing - and it fits with something Robert Heal also sent me. Have found Maryland National Park near the Queensland border. It is much further north than I assumed my family to have been at this time but will do some more research. In the meantime if anyone else knows of BORTHWICKS (BOTHWICK in the directory) in the Hunter / New England area in the 1830s I'd be very pleased to hear. 3. Thank you June. I'll follow that lead. The directory says Maryland, New England so perhaps Stanthorpe is a bit too far north. I'd assumed somewhere near Murrurundi because of the supposedly strong Hunter connections at this time and because son John is listed at Murrurundi. However this could be a very mistaken assumption. Am not sure how far "New England" extended at that time - and what the generally accepted boundaries (if any) of the "Maitland" region were in the late 1830s. Does any lister have any knowledge of the locally accepted areas - or did just about anything go? 3. Dear Don, National Records at Chester Hill should have a complete file on the Post Office at Kurrajong, from which you may get some interesting information. 3. Claude, Phil, Marg, Robert, et al, Claude .... I'm speechless :-) Phil ... no apology necessary, everyone is different. I was generally referring to the ones you see often on "genealogy" lists. Personally, I have never visited a chat room and nor have I ever sent an sms message (call me ancient !). There are always newbies out there (I think we all were new at one stage) who may be unfamiliar with mailing lists etc. and I often see the same ? asked ... "what does it mean". Yes Marg, I knew I'd forget, perhaps, one of the most often seen ones. (SKS = some kind soul, for those who *may* not know). and Robert ... tsk ! tsk ! NO rude ones allowed on the list (even in abbreviated form). Perhaps enough said ... Diane
