Constable Fred HILL of this city, is at present spendig a holiday in Scone with his grandfather, Mr Frank SMITH. Jack GRUGGAN, of Gosford, and native of Scone, and prominent all-round sportsman, is at present undergoing training in the Tamworth camp. Mr H. L. THOMPSON, of Merewether, who has been inmate of the S. M. Hospital for the past six weeks, returned home yesterday, accompanied by Mrs THOMPSON. Mr W.A.(Arch) SMITH, of Scone, who has been seriously ill for just on ten weeks, is now well on the mend. Mr SMITH is a patient in the Scone Memorial Hospital. Mrs G.M. CAMPBELL, of "Arden Hall", who has been though a long illness, was sufficiently well to be able to leave the Scott Memorial Hospital at the week-end. Master Robert WHITE, younger son of Col. and Mrs A.A. WHITE, of "Moss Vale", Scone, has successfully passed the educational test for entry into the Royal Australian Navy. Tom and Peter KEENE, only sons of Mr and Mrs Eric KEENE, of West Maitland, were in Scone on Saturday last to attend the funeral of their grandmother, Mrs M. KEENE. Both lads were wearing the now familiar khaki. Mr W. REITMAN, of Brushy Hill, who has been in the Scott Memorial Hospital for some weeks receiving treatment for a fractured leg, was well enough to return home at the week-end. The engagement is announced of Miss Aileen Agnes MCGREGOR, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J.J. MCGREGOR, of "Tarriaro", Narrabri, and formerly of Scone, to Colonel Wallace WILDE, second son of Mr and Mrs T.G. WILDE, of Narrabri. Mr E.S.W. EAGAR, of Swansea, was in town at the week-end looking up friends of other days. "Ted", whiles away quite a lot of his time in quest of the "finny tribe" and with a full share of success, too - so he informed me. Mr Tom MANNING, a young resident of Parkville, was admitted to the Scott Memorial Hospital by the Ambulance on Saturday suffering from a probable fracture of the pelvis. It is understood the injury was sustained in an accident in which a motor car was involved. Mrs LAWRENCE, wife of Mr M. LAWRENCE, of "View Hills", Gundy, whose serious illness had been referred to from time to time in these columns, passed away in the Scott Memorial Hospital, Scone, on Saturday evening last. In her 49th year, the deceased lady, who was the youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Chas. WALTERS, of Belltrees, was esteemed on all sides. Interment was made in the Scone Church of England Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, the service being conducted by Canon B. C. WILSON, M. A., in the presence of a large concourse of mourners. Further reference to the sad event will be made in Friday's issue.

Hi Jan, Many thanks for these snippets ... Mrs. F. SOM(M)ERVILLE may be one of mine ... Freda K.H. (nee BROWN), husband of Frank. Not sure of the PRICE connection, although there are some obscure ones in the family tree. Also, funny that you should mention it, as I have just returned from a trip up the country, which included some time in Scone, but not at the Empire Hotel :) Looking good, but could probably do with some more rain. For those of you who are not aware, Rootsweb has been having some problems of late and most of the mail sent over the past few days (or week ? ) is only just beginning to come thru. So, if you have sent a message to the list and haven't seen it yet, that is why. If it doesn't come thru, check the archives and if it's not there then send again. Some mail has started flowing today, so Rootsweb may have it sorted out at last. Also, try and stay clear of a currently circulating email "recommendation" for a free download called Speed Freak. Once downloaded it gets into your email address book and sends out a whole lot of spam, disguising itself with an email address that may be familiar to you (or something like that). Anyway, best to avoid that one ! And, a general reminder to keep your AV (anti-virus) programs up-to-date. Best to update at least once a week (minimum). Lastly, we have been joined by a number of new subscribers of late, so a warm welcome to all of you. Looking forward to your input, although I might add that everyone has been a little "quiet" of late ... lets hope next month may be better. Participation is the name of the game folks :) Cheers, Diane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Glasby" <jan.glasby@hawkerc.act.edu.au> Sent: Saturday, March 29, 2003 10:35 AM Subject: [H,H,HV] Snippets from "Scone Advocate" Tues 15 April 1947 > Mrs F. Hello Dawn. I don't have any info. to help you with, but I shall watch this topic with interest; because I have so often seen references to Aussies going to the California and New Zealand goldfields, that I reckon it would make a fascinating study in its own right -- to obtain details on all of those who went to each place, whether they married and/or had children there, then whether they stayed or returned. What I also think would be a great study, is just the numbers (and individuals of course) who travelled to the world's different goldfields -- purely as treasure-hunters ---- as distinct from those who emigrated in the 1850s/1860s as settlers. So much is written about Australia's immigration boom in the 1850s; but my reading of it is that most of them were intending to be settlers, and not gold-hunters. So, thanks for raising the issue; and I look forward to what our fellow expert list members might contribute on the topic. Regards to all of you: ray ----- Original Message ----- From: <GandDFriend@aol.com> > I have just found out that my ancestor's travelled to > California, USA. Mrs Kevin O'BRIEN, who visited Sydney for the Royal Easter Show, returned home last week-emnd. Mrs F. SOMMERVILLE, of Chatswood Sydney, is at present the guest of Mr and Mrs B. PRICE of the Empire Hotel, Scone. Mrs S. SIMPSON, of Scone, has returned after spending a vacation in Sydney and Adelaide. While in Adelaide Mrs SIMPSON was the guest of Mr and Mrs A. W. VANN. Mr and Mrs Don MCCALLUM, of "Bellsbrook", Moonan Flat, are receiving congratulations on the birth of twins, Merrin Kay and Archibald Donald, at Brancaster Private Hospital, Scone. The wedding took place on 29th March, at New Hindmarsh, Adelaide, of Evelyn May, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. W. VANN, to Henry Lindsay, elder son of Mr Eric and the late Mrs SIMPSON, of Scone. The death took place, recently, at Marks Point, Newcastle, of Mr Mark LEE, former well-known and respected Upper Hunterite, and for 35 years in charge of the Public School at Moonan Brook. Of the old gentleman, who was in his 86th year, and who retired from the Department about two decades gone, further reference will be made in the next issue. Cr John RILEY, of "Eulalia", Gundy, one of the best known figures in the public life of the Upper Hunter over a period of many years, passed away in Brancaster Private Hospital, Scone, early on Sunday morning, in his 77th year. The late Cr RILEY, who was predeceased by his wife some years since, is survived by one son and two daughters. Burial was made in the Church of England section of Gundy Cemetery yesterday afternoon in the presence of a concourse representative of the whole district, following services in St Luke's Scone, taken by Rev S. V. SATCHELL, Th.L., and in St Matthew's Gundy, taken by Rev. J. KEMP.
Dawn, There is a book (or two?) which lists passengers travelling from Australia to the Californian Goldfields. "Rags to Riches". It may be a bit early for you because I think it only goes to 1852. Sorry to be a bit vague - other listers may have more definite information . Your local library may have a copy - or could perhaps get it on inter-library loan for you. I have just found out that my ancestor's travelled to California, USA. Three sons lookng for adventure maybe going to the goldfields. They left from the Hawkesbury area around 1855. I don't know if this is folklore or the truth. Does anybody know if this was possible and where would I look for more information? Regards Dawn
We received a message a little while back (since deleted) re the surname WALL. This researcher mentioned one of the family going to California in the USA . If you would like to contact us again we have run across an article in the Maitland Mercury, on the sale of the W P Wall property in West Maitland, opposite the Roman Catholic Church, that may be of interest. Best wishes, Rod & Wendy Gow
Hello everyone. I am still trying to research the Hughes/Ancel family of Windsor, Wallsend, Kurri Kurri, Maitland. The latest mystery surrounds Henry George Ansell marrying Annie Humphries at Maitland circa 1900. at the age of 39. Henry was born at Windsor 1861. (ref Arndell Hawkesbury Pioneer Index and NSW BDM Ref 14079) Parents George Henry Ancel and Sarah McDuff nee Graham. {This birth is tantalising as we wonder if George Henry Ancel is the son of John Ansell (or James Jones) and Margaret Battesby, and wife of Hannah Walker (married 1832), or could George and Hannah have had a son George Henry.- no births to the couple can be found.} There also seem to be two Sarah Graham's living in the Hawkesbury at the same time. One married to Thomas McKellar. It seem that the Windsor Ancells may have had two children, with Hannah at the birth of her two children William George, and Henry, also at her Marriage to Rowland Hughes, (all at Wollongong) states that she was born in Windsor circa 1841. The Hughes family left Wollongong and moved to the Hawkesubury for a few years after Hannah Ancel's husband George died. It seems that that may have lived with Hannah snr at McGraths Hill, where the Hughes family was added to. Back to Henry born 1861. Henry died on 19 July 1915 at Homebush, aged 52. Parents George Ansell, Horsetrainer, and Sarah Graham. Henry and Annie's children include: Leslie born 1902 ref 28800 at Sydney he married Matilda E Davis at Burwood in 1926 ref 3321 Edward J born 1905 at Sydney ref 19806 he married Sybil E.G.Symons 1929 at Burwood ref 1948 Charles W born 1907 at Burwood ref 33718 he married Edna L Beal at Petersham 1930 ref 2491 Now I have the Maitland Pioneer Register, and looking at the Humphreys entry it states a daughter Elizabeth Anne born 1st February 1864 at Maitland, parents - John Humphreys and Mary Greedy. I can find no marriage. I have found a marriage of Henry G Ancel to Emily Showesmith in 1884 a real mystery. Emily is supposed to have married a James Davis in Queensland in 1899. I would love to have the BDM reference. Unfortunately I can only access the QLD BDM CD to 1889. Would love to have some help. ANNE

Dear Listers The following is a query passed on to me by Olive Lawson as we are hoping to publish a booklet on the Ward family for her. If you can help it would be very much appreciated. Olive gives her postal address but replies to the list will be passed on by myself. The query is given below. Many thanks, Jocelyn Powell For some years I have been researching details of the Ward family of Windsor (1870s to the 1930s). Most prominent was Joseph William Ward (1856-1928) who was Mayor of Windsor in 1910, and a prominent businessman, churchman, and sportsman. In 1873 Joseph married Ambrosine Bushell. They had a large family, some of whom are known to have remained in Windsor, and one at least of his sons believed to have been in business in the town from the 1920s on. I would be most interested to know whether any of Joseph Ward's descendants are still in the area, and would be particularly interested in any information about Joseph Ward and his family that any grand-children or other descendants may have. Joseph Ward's sister Isabella Ann Ward (1848-1930) married Charles Byers in Sydney in 1885. As Mrs Byers, she became housekeeper and carer of Henry Lawson in his later years. I have completed her biography, but seek further details of her brother Joseph's family in Windsor, before my book is finalised for publication. Olive Lawson, P.O. Box 212, North Sydney, NSW, 2059.
Mike, The NSW BDM indexes can be searched at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexSrch.cgi Registration was not compulsory until 1856 in NSW so the records prior to this rely on church registers. [Some lister may be able to check the full record] otherwise there is a listing for an Archibald Walker being born in 1829 to a William & Elizabeth Walker. Reference V182996 45A/1829. This would need verifying as WALKER is such a common name. According to the 1828 census of NSW there is a William & Elizabeth Walker arriving on the "Brixton" in 1821. He was a missionary & they were living at Parramatta. His wife is listed as Elizabeth Cordelia born in the colony of NSW & aged 24. Children also born in NSW Henrietta Elizabeth aged 4, Sarah Matilda A. aged 2 & Rowland Thomas B. Walker 2. The State Records NSW Has a number of databases that can be searched, try http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/ The Colonial Secretary Papers 1788-1825 record quite a few entries about a WALKER, William (Revd). Came free per "Brixton", 1821; Superintendent of the Female Orphan School; Wesleyan Missionary to the Aborigines at http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/colsec/default.htm There is a reference to the Female Orphan school at http://www.teachingheritage.nsw.edu.au/3readings/wlocality10_2_liston2.html and the following information from the "The Female Orphan School in the 1820s" states that Governor Brisbane "appointed a Wesleyan clergyman, the Reverend William Walker, and his wife to manage the Female Orphan School. Mrs Eliza Cordelia Walker, daughter of colonial missionary Rowland Hassall, was appointed matron on 4 January 1825 on a salary of £100 p.a. with her husband, William Walker, as master on a salary of £50. She was allowed rations for herself and child, and he was allowed rations. Her duties were the care and instruction in needlework of nearly 130 girls. His job was to instruct the children in reading, writing and arithmetic on the Madras or National System. Walker and his wife had spent the previous year managing the Native Institution at Blacktown. Brisbane commented, 'I was anxious also to try the experiment of the white and black Natives of this Colony imbibing their earliest intellectual and religious ideas under a common roof.' ] You would need to follow up and confirm that Archibald is connected to this family. You may like to contact the Local Studies Librarian at Parrmatta Library email parralib@parracity.nsw.gov.au and she maybe able to assist further. She could check the Parrmatta Pioneer register and the histories on Parramatta & the Female Orphan school. I will also check the Australian Dictionary of Biography for you as well.
