Blacktown Historical Society is putting together a Pioneers Register/Database covering 1788-1901. The Blacktown Pioneers working group is keen to hear from people who have information about the early families/settlers of the district up to Federation - 1901. This area covers Riverstone, Mt Druitt, Prospect, Seven Hills, Toongabbie and of course Blacktown. This also includes those that worked in the area. If you would like a form or more information contact Michael Wells, email [email protected]
Hi Lorrae, Yes, I have a copy too - it has been well done hasn't it? I haven't heard of any others, but Michelle & Jonathan have done a great job in photographing the Hawkesbury cemeteries and uploading them to the net. Hi I am trying to find out anything I can about William Bennett and William Lingard. They both arrived on the Speke 2 in 1826 after being sentenced to life transportation for highway robbery. They were convicted at Derby in the same year.I am sure that Bennett ended up in your area but Lingard seems to have disappeared. If anyone can help out I would be grateful. Hi Folks It is a very small world, and I believe that we are closer than we realise. William BAKER and Charles CROSS arrived on the Neptune in 1790 - and their descendants have married many times over in the 226 years since their arrival. Yes, many siblings of one line have married siblings in the other line. I was born and raised in a small central Queensland country town of Springsure. My father was born there, but he married a lass from Mackay. His younger sister was also born in Springsure, but she married a lad from Clermont. So far from the Hawkesbury where the CROSS and BAKER families originated, yet the lass from Mackay was a descendant of Charles CROSS and the lad from Clermont was a descendant of William BAKER. It was only this June, that my cousin told me his ancestor had also arrived on the NEPTUNE and we made the connection. I havea lot of information on the BAKER family and have been working with a group researching the BAKER family and I was able to add a whole branch to their tree for them. The lad from Clermont was a grandson of John Thomas BAKER and Amelia Ellen MARSH who had married in Inverell in 1889, and moved to Capella, where they had three children. The youngest and only daughter was Amelia Gertrude Marsh BAKER who married James Douglas MUIRHEAD. However, Gertrude died young, leaving four young sons who were raised by Grandmother BAKER in Clermont. It is interesting that no matter how far we travel, we always met someone with a connection. Hi List This list has been quiet since 18 Augsut- so thought to send an email. I recently received the 'A Colonial Churchyard' which is the headstones and burial records for Ebenezer Church, at Ebenezer. I would like to say that I think it is very well done, some of the photos are outstanding, in particular with the fog around the headstones It has been done by row, with an index. A very useful resource tool for that area. I would like to say a very well done to the 'Ebenezer Church Cemtery Trust' Are there any other books also available, on the local cemeteries, please? Dear Amanda, On my webpage at www.thomasl.com/cory John, Robert and Samuel HIPWELL are listed as residents on the Vacy Estate and a John Hipwell as a resident on Tackbeare. I am seeking any info on Joseph and Eliza Owen. Both were convicts and married in 1838 in Newcastle. They had at least 2 daughters. Sarah and Elizabeth. There is a record of Elizabeth's birth. They all lived in the Paterson region I believe. Sarah is my decendant. I cannot find any record of Joseph or Eliza's death in either NSW or Qld. I have found Sarah's subsequent marriage and death in Qld. any help would be appreciated. thanks Judy Tyson ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 5:00 AM Subject: AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY-D Digest V06 #163

If anyone is going to the above in the next few weeks and would be able to do a look up for me, I have the reel and page number it would be very much appreciated. Please contact me off list. Tracie King [email protected]
Hi Tracie. Mullaley is a small village about 40ks west of Gunnedah so any births there would have almost certainly been registered at Gunnedah being the nearest centre. hope this helps with the confusion Wal Carter Gunnedah
I have been doing a bit of family history and have come up with the Singleton family yet again. The one I am trying to find out who belongs to whom is Agnes Kathleen Singleton born 1895 at Mullally NSW daughter of Benjamin and Eliza. In her obituary it says that she was the Great Grand-daughter of Benjamin Singleton who with John Howe discovered Singleton NSW. On the BDM is says Agnes R Singleton born in Gunnedah daughter of Benjamin and Eliza Singleton, it also says that she was the youngest of 18 which is also where I get confused. Any help would be very much appreciated Tracie King
Peter There is a death registered for George Gurr, Registration Number V18431080 27B/1843 with NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. It says he was 31, but does not give his father or mother's names or the district in which he died. Abraham MILLS who arrived on the "Moffat" in August 1836 is a much researched gggrandfather of mine about whom I am trying to fill in 'gaps' regarding his exact whereabouts and circumstances during his early years in Australia. I would appreciate comments or information on the following: On arrival in 1836 went from his ship to Hyde Park Barracks and then assigned to "Engineers" later surfacing in Maitland where he received his TOL on recommendation of the Magistrate in Paterson. He is understood to have been a timber getter but:- Does anyone have specific information on his placement or work during the 1836 to 1841 period ??? On receiving his TOL he was to marry, Nov 1843 Moprpeth, to a Margaret GURR (nee GANT) who had arrived in Australia (coincidently on the same vessel "Moffat" in 1841) married to and pregnant by George GURR. Margaret and George show in the 1841 Hunter Valley Directory as living in Glendon, in the valley in 1841, but then Margaret marries Abraham. Does anyone know any details of the apparent demise of George GURR in or near Glendon, Maitland, Morpeth (or elsewhere) between January to November 1841 ??? Following the birth of their first child, William in 1844, Abraham and Margaret baptise him and register the birth of their second child Maria, in Kissing Point/Dundas before apparently returning to Stroud/Booral for the birth of third child James in 1848. Does anyone have further information of possible family movements during these years and or the likelihood of such a movement by an ex- convict and new family from the Hunter to Dundas and return in these years .... ie; down and up the Gt Nth Road etc. ??? William PACEY who arrived on the "Countess of Harcourt" in September 1828 and to whom I am similarly related was also assigned to 'The Engineers' but became a Hunter Valley based convict and TOL worker and about whom I am seeking similar fill in information: Does anyone have information on his real placement and location in the Hunter in the timber industry from 1828 to TOL date ??? The PACEY family are in the Hunter Valley directory for 1841 at Upper Paterson which apparently refers to settlement known as THALABA or The THALABA Estate which was probable meeting place of William with Abraham above. Does anyone have information on activities/location of Thalaba in relation to timber gathering, somewhere possible south-east of Dungog, 1840 - 1860 ????? Looking forward to all and any information Thank you all, Peter QUIRK, Nelson Bay
I would be interested in knowing as well, please - although the one I need is for a person who died in 1907. It involved a couple of very large properties, one property went to half of the kids and the other to the remainder and they were managed with delegates from either side, plus the wife/ mother was involved, until she died in 1928. During this time two daughters, one from each group, sold out their share to other siblings, but by 1928, when the properties were sold - bad luck or bad management (??) - saw a shortfall of a couple of thousand pounds ( mortgaged ?). I don't know if the sale in 1928 occurred because of the death of the wife and the winding up of the estates from the original husband's will or just that by this time, they were so in debt that they couldn't continue. The deceased estate files on the NSW State Records site ( which they say sometimes includes a copy of the will) http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=15 has only been indexed to c May 1907 as yet and my chap died in September of that year. Is there any way of finding out if there was a file for him ??
