    2. Maureen
    3. Hawkesbury Advocate, Friday, March 16, 1900 (page 4) WILBERFORCE (From Our Own Correspondent) Miss E. Lockart is home from Sydney on a fortnight's holidays. Miss Alice Dunstan has just returned, after a month's holidays with her mother at Gerringong. Miss Ada Bowd has been spending a few days with Mrs. Hazelwook at Granville. Mrs. Geo. Nicholls is spending a few weeks with her sister (Mrs. H. Buttsworth) at Gerringong. The parishioners of Wilberforce presented Rev. T. H. Taylor with a travelling bag a few weeks ago. Mrs. Josiah Buttsworth, who has been very ill for some months, is spending a couple of months at Manly. Mr. Geo. Johnston has been very busy during the week drawing in maize, and getting it ready for market. Some of the suppliers are going to give up taking milk to the local creamery, on account of the low price given. A concert in connection with St. John's C. of E. restoration fund, is being arranged to take place in Easter week. The friends of Mrs. P. Daley will be sorry to hear that she has been very ill. Dr. Dibson has been in attendance. We are pleased to see that Mr. Geo. Buttsworth (who had his leg broken some weeks ago) is able to get about again. Mr. W. Robinson, of the Settlement, is in camp at Kensington, and will probably leave for South Africa with the next contingent. Mr. C. Greentree has got six months leave from his selection. He, with his good wife, have moved into Wilberforce. Charlie has not been having the best of health lately, and we hope the change will do him good. [Image available]

    3. Hi Jo I am taking a punt that you are trying to find who James Budsworth who was married to Catherine Ryan? who had many children, and two of whom married descendants of the Thomas & Jane Rose family?? Cecily Budsworth married Ephraim Joseph Rose in 1890 and Elizabeth Ann Budsworth married John Rose (Ephraim's brother) in 1896 ... and both couples producing lots of little rosebuds :) I have not checked the Budsworth line, however I would check under the spelling of BUDWORTH as well. There were two convicts who arrived by that surname and Joseph may have married Kitty or Catherine - perhaps Mary Budworth, James 1835 Bengal Merchant (2) Lancaster 1833 7 23 Budworth, Joseph 1829 Claudine (2) Liverpool 1829 7 16 Both of these chaps were was Liverpool, Joseph being a Stable Boy and James a Stable Man by occupation..... they appear to connected on that face of it. regards Lesley Uebel mailto:[email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Jo Rose Sent: Saturday, September 23, 2006 5:59 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [HHHV] AUS-NSW-HILLS-HAWKESBURY-HUNTER-VALLEY Digest, Vol 1,Issue 7 does anyone have any knowledge of Jospeh Budsworth & his wife Kitty thanks Jo Rose

    3. Dear List, I sent this message earlier, but am not sure if the list received it, so I am trying again. Just a brief message to let you know about the newly formed Grono Family Association for descendants of John Grono and Elizabeth Bristow. The aims of the association are: 1. to try to bring together all the various branches of the family, 2. to try to preserve historic family photos and research, and also "stories" about the lives of descendants, 3. to organise family reunions, and 4. attempt to correct incorrect information published about the family in the past For more information please visit our website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gronofamily/index.htm, or email the Association at [email protected] Note the website is still in its infancy, so keep checking it often for new information. Regards, Karen Mills (on behalf of the Grono Family Association)

    3. Joseph Dorman descendants Thanks Peter. I am researching the line descended from George Arthur Mobbs and isabella Atkinson. Their grand daughter Muriel Mobbs insisted they were descended from Samuel Mobbs , a free settler, but I am sure she is descended from William Mobbs the Convict. Have you heard of Samuel? I can't find any Samuel marrying or fathering children in the BMDs . I will send you what I have. Thanks again. Always good to find a fellow researcher. Marie No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. [HHHV] Edward/Edmund Markham ' Mangles' 1822. Seven Years under (UK's) Irish Insurrection Act
    2. fcm
    3. Markham was initally sent up Parramatta River and assigned to James Byrne of Airds on arrival of the 'Mangles' in Port Jackson in November 1822. I cannot be sure he actually went to Byrne, though if he did so, it was for a very brief period. He was later assigned to John McHenry J P of Evan (now Penrith) from 21 October 1824 (until T of L in 1827) and a few years beyond, to about 1830. So where in the meantime? Thirty four long years of research has finally turned him up this week - quite by chance, while searching the reel for entirely unrelated information - in SRNSW Microfilm Reel 1254 in the WINDSOR District Constable's 1824 Population Book for lists made in 1823. Alas, whereas most such Notebooks recorded name in street or farm order, enabling us to easily ascertain which "Government Servants" worked for whom, our concientious Constable in Windsor took his records home and relisted all the names neatly in alphabetical order! Damn! Are there any Windsor experts on the List who might have any knowledge of Markham's Master in that 23 month period (November 1822 to October 1824) , or where I might search, pls? Frank M. 1. James Hicks & the Slater Family c1848
    2. Chris Ralph
    3. Hello Listers, My 3rd great grandfather James HICKS was transported to NSW in 1830. Briefly, his story is as follows: He was convicted of stealing lambs at Hertford Quarter Sessions in England in 1829, and was sentenced to death. This penalty was within days commuted to transportation to NSW for life. He was at the time married and was the father of one infant son. His wife Mary was expecting a second child, who was born as he was detained on a prison hulk awaiting transportation. That expected child was my 2nd great grandfather. Both James & Mary HICKS were illiterate, so it is unlikely that they were able to communicate after his departure from English shores. His family was never reunited with him in Australia, and no recollection of this traumatic episode was passed down the generations. I discovered these sad details only in recent years. Once landed in NSW in May 1830, James was assigned to work on Edward Sparke's estate. I understand that this was located at Woodberry and Woodlands in the Lower Hunter Valley. In 1839 James was granted a ticket of leave in the Maitland district. In 1845 he was permitted to change this to the Dungog district. By 1848 he had ended up working for a small settler on the Williams River, named James Slater. It was at that point that he got himself into further trouble when he abducted Slater's teenage daughter, the consequence of which was that he served a year in Maitland Gaol. A second ticket of leave was granted to him in 1851, when he was to remain in the Illawarra district. I have no further clear history following the issue of that document. However, I see that there was a James HICKS living back in Dungog in 1866 and 1872, who may or may not have been my ancestor. My purpose in offering this account is that I have an opportunity to visit these areas for just two days later this month, flying out from England on 17th September. I hope to spend 19th-21st September looking around the places where my 3rd great grandfather lived out the second part of his life. In order to make the most of this opportunity, it would be helpful if anyone could offer advice or information on the following questions which I have: 1. Where on the Williams River was James Slater and his family living in 1848? Is there any way of discovering this from local directories of the time? The only mention I have in the newspaper report says: "It appeared from the evidence of James Slater and Susannah Slater that Slater was a small settler living on the William River, and that in 1848 the prisoner was working and living with him for a short time". 2. There are a couple of references from James Hicks' ticket of leave, and I wonder where I should go to follow up these references, which are 50/3078 and 51/1815. 3. Does anyone have any ideas just where I might locate the old Sparke estate at Woodberry and Woodlands in the Lower Hunter Valley? 4. Apart from Dungog and Maitland and the Sparke estate, is there anywhere else you would recommend I try to see during my visit? Or is there anything else I might realistically do to prepare for my visit during the next two weeks? Many thanks for any ideas. From a grey, wet day in England, Chris Ralph

I cannot find William Lingard. You might like to search the various NSW State Records indexes on www.records.nsw.gov.au. Convict Ships to Australia NSW 1801 - 1849 shows the "Speke" 2 arriving in 1826. On this site, some of the ships are linked to information on one or more of the convicts who arrived on that voyage, but unfortunately 'Speke" 2 is not linked.
