Have only recently been receiving these messages which I find very interesting. My brother Max & I have been researching William Horton who came to Australia as a convict in 1832. Worked at Patterson NSW for a John Swan, then moved on to work for William Ogilvie & John Cox. William then joined the explorer Henry Stuart Russell before becoming the owner of properties in Toowoomba & Ipswich & the famous Bullshead Inn at Drayton. Does anyone have knowledge of William Horton? We would love to know more.

    3. Alan Eade, Many thanks. As you will see below, the period in which I am interested is a bit later than his Blue mountains construction period. Thelma, Many thanks. I had not been aware of your websites, (mainly because I had only recently been targeting the Windsor/Hawkesbury area, though I have always been well aware of Wm Cox in our history) and found them interesting. My particular search is for one Edward/Edmund Markham (Mangles 1822) from end 1822 or some time in 1823. He was certainly assigned to James Byrne at Airds on arrival but either was diverted or did not stay with Byrne for long. In October 1824 he certainly commenced in the employ of John McHenry JP at Evan (Penrith), remaining with him as an overseer until 1830, well beyond his Ticket of Leave and eventual freedom. So where was he in the interim period? My only clue is the District Constable's Notebook of 1824 listing (in alpha order, alas, rather than in employer order) all names, incl Markham's, as resident in Windsor district in 1823. Given the magisterial status of Cox and McHenry, could Cox have "recommended" Markham to McHenry in 1824? A long shot!!! Hence my attempt to learn if he was ever on Cox's list. (If not I'll have to search among the other contemporary landed gentry.) So I'll be very grateful if you are able to look through your records. 3. To Whom It May Concern, I am interested in making contact with any person who has information on the following convicts and their descendants in England: Catherine Johnson arrived on the First Fleet in 1788; Tristram Moore an Irish convict who arrived in 1802 on the AtlasII; and William Joshua Bowd who was transported in 1815. I believe William had a brother George who was also transported to New South Wales. I have no information on William's English family. William settled in the Windsor/Wilberforce areas. Some of his family(my descendants) later moved to the Scone area. 3. Hi all Time to get back into the genie research. Here is a really difficult one for me. A few years ago I did a book and tree on my ancestor Emmanuel Danero from Genoa who assumed the surname 'Neich' when he came to Australia in 1825. He became quite wealthy and had two wives - Mary Comer and Mary Parkinson and one girlfriend during the 1st marriage - Mary Cupitt. 25 children all told that we know of. He and Mary Cupitt were the g-grandparents of Donald Bradman, cricketer. Emanuel did a lot of traveling around Sydney, made sure his children married well. He had the Bath Arms at Burwood, plus properties further afield where he wld have met Mary Cupitt around the Hawkesbury we think. at any rate there is another whole line of Neich's still living in, and originating in, the Windsor / Hawkesbury district and we cannot trace their origins. They were always told they were from Emanuel. Here is what details I do have, and I hope someone from this list may be able tohelp unearth the rest - I live in Molong west of Orange and have a child with a disability so its difficult for me to get down to Sydney to do lengthy research. From oral recollections there are definitely 3 brothers, one of whom vanished, but two definitely named John and Alexander Neich and is substantiated several times over. Then came my research where I found 3 deaths of 3 men, same parents listed: John Neich d. 29.8.1948 Pitt Town (confirmed) the only birth I can find is John Leach 1860 Sofala Thomas Leach born 1862 Sofala, died 1919 Bathurst Alexander Neich died 10.7.1943 Neich Road Maraylya (confirmed). found a birth for Alexander Leach 1867 Wattle Flat, Bathurst. he married Emily Clarke, children all born at Windsor all 3 of above have listed as parents John Leach and Fanny (I think is Frances Lowe). there was another child on the BDMs (but this were not known by descendants at Windsor) so looks like from another father: Edward Naughton (to Fanny Lowe) 1869 Sofala died 1938 Bathurst I've had no success thru Lithgow or Bathurst family history groups and their records so thats a dead end, my only chance seems to be doing more around Windsor. So I then wondered whether these Neich/Leach 3 boys werent really Neich's but had adopted that name for some reason because they'd met Emanuel and saw he was rich ?? However, a reunion back in 1988, descendants of the Windsor lot were the spitting image of the Bath Arms lot, so............. None of the BDM certs I've bought shed any more light than the info above. The tree I have tentatively put together is: John LOWE 1811 Aberdeen Scotland, d. 8.4.1899 Wattle Flat m. Frances Carney 3 children - John, Alexander and Frances LOWE 1836, 1839, 1840 resp. Frances LOWE 1840-1892 m. 1859 John Leach (b. 1835 New York?) children = John Leach 1860, Thomas Leach 1862, Alexander Leach 1867 The names of Frances' sons would tie in with her brothers names but how did they get to NEICH?? thanks! 2. Marie Donaldson
    3. I recently saw a mention of the "Ask a Librarian Service" on one of these lists and thought I would tell listers what a great service this is. I logged onto their website and left my details, and the fact that I was looking for a newspaper article and death notice about someone killed in an accident on 30 Sep 1966. In a few days I had a phone call saying the wonderful people at the State Library had found both a news report and a death notice in the Newcastle Herald, and that the cost would be $5.50. I remarked that this was very reasonable and the librarian said that lots of people didn't think so! She then sent me an email stating date and page numbers of the articles , and a downloadable form which I filled out and sent off with my money on Tuesday. Today I received the copies in the mail. What a great service this is for physically "challenged" people like me who can no longer get to the State Library or SAG etc. The cost goes up by the number of pages copied, but, from memory I think that 50 pages costs about $13.00 - very reasonable I thought The URL is [email protected] Marie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Nick helped start me off on the wonderful journey of discovering local history and family research nearly twenty four years ago Without his encouragement and enthusiasm I would be stuck behind a desk, bean counting. I still use Nick's books for reference, and checking that I haven't overlooked any sources. May he be welcomed into the arms of his ancestors with much love. It is indeed our loss that he has gone.
