Toll Bar Governor Macquarie established a system of tolls on the roads out of Sydney in 1811, and a Toll Bar was built on the Parramatta Road near Boundary Street, Parramatta. The Toll Bar was shifted to the junction of the Parramatta and Dog Trap (now Woodville) Roads, in 1831. Tolls were collected until 1880. John Armstrong
Hi Laurel Granville is a tad out of the area of this list :) so perhaps another list may be more suitable When researching this you may like to include his correct name which was Garnham not Graham. He left the colony in unfortunate circumstances and died on his way back to England in about 1816/7. regards Lesley Uebel mailto:[email protected] CLAIM A CONVICT http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/index.html ************************************* -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Laurel Atwell Sent: Tuesday, November 14, 2006 10:07 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [HHHV] Dog Trap Gates Perhaps someone can help me here. Granville College stands on land that was the original grant to Graham Blaxcell. This farm was nicknamed Dog Trap Farm. Woodville Road was also called Dog Trap Road. I have a feeling that I have read somewhere that these gates were in operation long before the railway line (early 1800s) and that these gates were used to check identification namely tickets of leave holders etc, etc. Also feel that dog traps were set at these gates not only to trap Dingoes but also escaped convicts. In the Concord neighbourhood in the 1830s Emmanuel Neich opened the Bath Arms of the corner of Burwood Road and Parramatta Road. The inn was a stagecoach stop and did well with Neich running it until 1893. It continues to operate. I have copies of photos taken of the inn about 1880 and 1890. There is lots of info on Neich. Hello Michelle, I have had terrific service from Mowbray Art Service / Australian Photo Restoration Service http://www.photorestoration.com.au/aboutus.htm Best regards, Wayne Carter [email protected]
Hi Michelle, I also have an old photo on 'milk' glass. I spoke recently to a gent in Melbourne (where I live) who said he could scan it and make a digital copy. I'm not sure what sort of restoration you're needing (mine is broken in three pieces and would be taped together), but I assume if whoever you take it to could make a digital copy they could also do restoration work just as they would on old (normal) photographs. Just make sure that they are reputable and have examples of their work on show. Sorry I can't help with the names, but good luck with your research. Lina, I'm way behind in reading your posting, but I was thinking, I park my car in Neich Pde at Burwood 4 days a week and on the corner of Neich Pde and Parramatta Rd is the "Bath Arms Hotel', also if memory serves me correctly (ha) Don Bradman was married in the C of E on Burwood Rd, then maybe Burwood Library has some useful information for you to investigate (the do have a family history section) their web site is http://www.library.burwood.nsw.gov.au/ Regards Ann (in Sydney) > Lina <[email protected]> wrote: > > snip........ > A few years ago I did a book and tree on my ancestor Emmanuel Danero > from > Genoa who assumed the surname 'Neich' when he came to Australia in 1825. > He > became quite wealthy and had two wives - Mary Comer and Mary Parkinson > and > one girlfriend during the 1st marriage - Mary Cupitt. 25 children all > told > that we know of. Appologies for not providing enough details on my first posting. Hawkesbury Landholders Vol 1 Pearl Beach & Patonga 1839 - 1c.1990 released last May, contains a full chain of title for most blocks of land in both these locations. It also includes Volume, Folio & Dealing numbers for each transaction, place of residence at the time the land was bought, occupations, husband name & occupation in the case of married women being the purchaser, and a whole lot more. A wealth of information for family historians. Hawkesbury Landholders Vol 2a Richmond Windsor, Mulgrave Place and beyond, focuses on land in the Parishes of Ham Common and St Matthew but because the Land Grant Indexes listed the locations simply as "Mulgrave Place" it also includes land in a number of other areas. As this is all Old System land and very difficult and immensely time consuming to search individual chains of title, it's an index of names with a Dept of Lands reference number to help you locate the information. It contains; a list of land grants in the general Hawkesbury area with Serial & Page No's, details of names and Portion Numbers where available from both Parish Maps, details of names and Lot/Section Numbers where available from the Town maps of Richmond and Windsor. It also includes Agnes Banks. There is a list of people who sold land (identified in this area) pre 1825. An 1827 list of owners & occupiers is also included. Apart from these entries it also contains ALL names mentioned in Primary Applications relating to land in this area and the often difficult to find, PA number. Due to the nature of the content & research done for a PA, these entries also can lead you to bankruptcies & Sequestration dates and numbers but only the names and the PA number are listed on the CD. Many of the names are family members, beneficiaries, trustees, mortgagees, and others mentioned in the Old System Land documents but not all were land holders. By referencing the PA you can then obtain the document reference number for the person of interest. There are approximately 7,000 entries. A Primary Application (PA) was lodged by anyone wanting to convert their land from Old System Title to Torrens Title from it's commencement on 1 Jan 1863. The information on the CD has been taken from the PA Search Books at the Land Titles Office which contain more details referencing other land than the official end result which are now mostly available at State Records Kingswood. The PA is the very important link between Old System Land & Torrens Title Land. As many of you will know, the PA number can be very difficult to locate. This is an ongoing project which will take some time to complete and as such the proceeds of the CD's will fund the unavoidable purchase of Title Deeds to continue the project into the Torrens Title Land, ultimately resulting in a massive database and resource for family historians. The data has been taken from the publicly available records of the NSW Dept of Lands. The CDs are in Excel format with an Excel reader included so no special software is required. Vol 1 is available now Vol 2a is available for pre-release orders, shipment will be on the release date 4 Dec 06. Both are on eBay at the moment (search for landholders) As Rootsweb does not permit prices to be advertised on their lists, please contact me OFF LIST on [email protected] for Payment options etc. Feel free to ask any questions not covered here Many thanks for your interest. Kind regards Helen Dickinson

Hi I am also researching a William Horton at Paterson. This one arrived on the Mangles in 1833 and was assigned to JP Webber (the owner of the Tocal property which is very close to Swan's block). His occupation was "shoemaker, tolerable". He was probably transferred to the service of Caleb and Felix Wilson when they bought Tocal in 1834 (a shoemaker is listed on the list of convicts transferred). In 1836/37 (according to the 1837 Muster) he was with J Adair at Paterson (a friend of James Webber's). He received his Ticket of Leave for the Paterson district in 1845 and a Conditional Pardon in 1850. He is probably the William Horton who married Emma ALLUM in Paterson in 1847. A William Horton died at Paterson in 1865 (I am not a descendant so I cannot work backwards to confirm it is the same man) For some general info on convict life at Tocal/Paterson in the 1820s and 1830s see my web pages at: http://www.tocal.com/homestead/vandv/index.html regards Brian Walsh >Have only recently been receiving these messages which I find very interesting. > >My brother Max & I have been researching William Horton who came to Australia as a convict in 1832. Worked at Patterson NSW for a John Swan, then moved on to work for William Ogilvie & John Cox. William then joined the explorer Henry Stuart Russell before becoming the owner of properties in Toowoomba & Ipswich & the famous Bullshead Inn at Drayton. Does anyone have knowledge of William Horton? We would love to know more. > > >
