Has anyone got copies of the articles written in the "Hawkesbury Herald" newspaper by John or Jack Maguire compiled in about 1906 about Ben Hall, bushrangers and Forbes area. The issues required no longer survive and have not been microfilmed. I know that some families have kept certain articles, obituaries and pages from this interesting newspaper. This series is being sought by the National Library of Australia for a special project. Please contact me offline if you are able to assist. Michelle Nichols
Please help me to identify some of these photos; I have put new up. They were found in my Grandparents shed after they had passed away in Muswellbrook. My grandmother was right into family research and had hundreds of photos all which were written on in great detail. These ones were not written on which makes me wonder if they were sent to them or that they rescued them from going to the garbage. My grandfather was a removalist in Muswellbrook and travelled all over helping people move. Both were great collectors. Most of them have a photographers name on them from Muswellbrook but others have Sydney on them, which only tells me that the photographer could have been travelling. Some of the photos are large, two are etched on Glass, and some are postcard size while the others are bigger. Thanks in advance and here is hoping that they all find new homes. Tracie http://traciesfamhistory.blogspot.com/ Some of the family names that they could be connected to are King, Jaeger, Small, Greentree, Schubert and Johnson
Good evening list, While I have been gathering information for www.ryersonindex.org relating to Death and Funeral Notices I have found a few other items of interest, and I thought this one worth posting. In the Sydney Morning Herald of 24 Oct 1881 there is about half a page, in small type, listing the tenderers who were successful in gaining contracts to carry mail. Bearing in mind that mail conveyance was a State matter then and these contracts were to take effect from 1 Jan 1882. It is under the heading "Government Notices" and the first few under a sub heading "Western Roads" relate to the Hawkesbury. 1. Railway Station and Post Office Parramatta four times (??daily) Matthew A JONES. Seventy Eight Pounds per annum. One Year. Conditionally. 2. Parramatta Railway and Post Offices Parramatta, Baulkham Hills and Rouse Hill. Eighty Pounds P.A. Three years. 3. Withdrawn. 4. Railway Station and Post office Windsor, 4 times a day. Ellen Cleary. One year. Twenty Pounds. 5. Pitt Town, Wisemans Ferry, Central McDonald and St Albans, twice a week. Horseback. Twice a week. Thomas Thompson. Fourty Pounds P.A. ? blurred. Three Years. 6. Wisemans Ferry and Mangrove Creek. Once a week. John FULLER. Three years. Fifty Pounds P.A. 7. Claga, Putty and Howes Valley, once a week, horseback. David HAYMAN. Three years. Seventy Pounds P.A. 8. Penrith and Castlereagh, six times a week, William G DERBIN, horseback, one year. Fourty Two Pounds, conditionally. 9. Penrith, Mulgoa and Luddenham, via Main Road, six times a week, horseback, John Freeburn. Thirty Pounds P.A. Three years. Maybe a lister will find a relative here. Hi Michelle, Thanks for the details of the 'Blessing of the Bonnets', but unfortunately I won't be able to get there. I belong to the Botany Bay FHS and we have had a project for some time, I have made a bonnet for each of my 3 female convicts. To coincide with the above event, Vessels of hope by artist Christina Henri, will be held at the Hawkesbury Regional Art Gallery between 31 July - 13 September 2009. Hawkesbury Regional Gallery is located in the Deerubbin Centre at 300 George Street Windsor. Vessels of Hope, is a tribute to the convict women of Australia, developed by conceptual artist Christina Henri. Christina's dream is to have 25,566 bonnets made, one for every woman transported to Australia. If you have a convict ancestor, Christina invites you to share your information on that woman's life and to make a bonnet with her name on it. If you have no female convict ancestry she provides a list from which you can 'adopt' a convict woman to whom you feel drawn. Other "blessing" events are planned throughout the countryside, check the website for more details. Michelle Nichols
