Hi Gwen Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I will try the land titles search when I can get to sydney. I have spoken with the ever-helpful Local Studies Librarian, Geoffrey Potter, and we could not find any official reference prior to the estate booklet- except Bella Shakespeare's recorded recollection of its name when she went there with her Dad seeking abalone shells c1916. The Estate was subdivided in 1925 and widely marketed in 1926. I know of the statement in the brochure:(you are so lucky to have a copy!) But it is in conflict with Bella's that "The Pearl Beach" was how it was known (at least in Patonga) c1916 (ref "Pearl Beach, Early Days." by Ben Smith 1993 p 15). CR Staples brought up all of Rock Davis' holdings in 1921 from his estate.:(3 blacks Rock had purchased and one he claimed in 1896 by reson of 'undisturbed and undisputed possession since 1865) from of William Barton's family. Sir Edmond's dad William had bought it from retd sgt William MOSELY ,the 1st owner of the initial grant (who seemed to have bought it for 75 pounds just to use up a 50 pounds remission, as he sold it again before he even received the title!). None of the Parish Maps I have seen record the name, but Geoffrey Potter suggests I try the local Council records prior to the subdivision. I don't know whether there are extant any Davis family papers that might be useful, but there is a story that on his deathbed Rock DAVIS was heard by his wife Mary to whisper " The world is a good place for the hut at Pearl Beach was never robbed". This would have been June 1904, but I have jet to find a contemporary record. (Again this reference is in Ben Smith's book "Pearl Beach, Early Days."(1993) p13) I was hoping some one with family records of the period might make mention of the name, as the official records do not appear to so far. Take your money with you :-) A copy ticket at the LPI aka LTO is now $10 Have you asked Phillipe TABETEAU Or Joan FENTON ? One of the CC FHS members Valerie RUBIE did alot of research and eventually wrote a book on Mt Penang( pub 2004) . Try as she might she was never able to find out where this name had come from or who had named it > > None of the Parish Maps I have seen record the name, but Geoffrey Potter > suggests I try the local Council records prior to the subdivision. Are there any from the 1920's ??????? Its amazing how quickly such facts can be lost Bye MargM
Hello Kay, Many thanks for all that Pearl Beach information which I will add to my files - all grist to the history mill! Hope that you are able to pin down the truth of the naming of Pearl Beach. Wonder if any records are still in existence for C R Staples & Co? Best regards, Gwen
