    3. Hi Marg Can I entice you a little further south to Pearl Beach? I'm trying to find the first recorded use of this name.In 1925-6 C R Staples developed the "Pearl Beach Estate -Woy Woy" and named all the streets after precious and semiprecious stones. However I think the name 'the Pearl beach" predates that development. I cannot however find it on any maps. There is a reference in Ben Smith's book "Pearl Beach- Early Days" (1993 pp14-15 ) to Bella SHAKESPEARE of Patonga and later of Woy Woy, who claimed her father referred to it as this in c1916. I would like to ask whether anyone can direct me to a written source prior to 1925. Any references in family papers/ diaries etc would be really welcome. many thanks Kay Williams >Found in the Gosford Star newspaper of 3 Dec 1927 >The Gosford suburb of Saratoga got electricity for the first time > >Hard to imagine life on a day like today with out it ....... 3. Hello Kay, Was interested in your posting and question to Marg re the first recorded use of the name Pearl Beach. Just a thought on the subject: The attractive booklet put out by C R Staples and Co Ltd for their "Pearl Beach Estate" in the twenties, (my copy dated 1928) includes the following comment written in November 1925: "For many years Pearl Beach - locally known as Green Point Beach, after the vividly green headland which forms its southern bundary - has been regarded as the gem of the Woy Woy wonderland..." Perhaps you could do a land title search on the estate which the company evidently purchased around 1919-21, as this would describe the location? In 1925 the brochure writer, in recording the history of the estate, stated that "it is about five years since the property passed into the hands of the present owners". Have you enquired at the Local Studies section of Gosford City Library? Subdivision records, Parish maps, or their Pearl Beach files could provide clues to help. 3. Kay I have a small booklet called Place names on the Central Coast. It says it was once called Green Point and was possibly the first stop Governor Phillip and his party made in after leaving Sydney in March 1978 to explore Broken Bay.; He also stopped at the now Green Point - quite some distance north towards Gosford (where I live) on the same trip- obelisk to mark this spot as I believe there is at Pearl Beach. The article goes on to say it was left in isolation for almost a century until Rock Davis and William Mosely purchased land where Rock Davis kept cattle and used the timber for his ship building at Blackwall (Gwen doubtless will comment on this) CR Staples and Co of Sydney purchased the land from the estate of Rock Davis and in 1928 subdivided and sold the land as Pearl Beach.... etc as you said. Sounds like an early marketing ploy just as later - in the 1950's- the notorious (to locals) Copacabana was developed and all the streets given Sth American names. As a born and bred local, I always though the name was derived from the design the incoming waves make on the beach- lovely scallop or pearl shaped indentations, which can clearly be seen from the Mt Ettymalong headland above. Have a few family shots of the beach clearly showing this. Best wishes Judy -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
