I seem to remember someone asking if I had ever heard of a person rowing from Sydney to Brisbane Water. No, I hadn't, but came across the following just recently in The Gosford Times of Friday, 1 December 1911: "Mr B. Gilchrist of Cremorne recently pulled from Cremorne to Woy Woy, about 30 miles, 19 of which is ocean [?] , in a 14 ft open rowing boat, alone and without food or water. He nearly met disaster when he collided with a browsing shark, which attacked the boat in a determined fashion. The journey occupied seven hours". This was the entire news item. The reason for the determination shown by a possibly white-faced oarsman pulling in double-quick time to Woy Woy was not explained, but perhaps he had run out of cash for the train, and a lovely lady was awaiting his arrival....
